Movie: The Ring Two
Time: 9:00
Theater: Loews Kips Bay 32
Crowd: 450 seat theater, sold out

Trailers:
Red Eye (whispering)
Dark Water (no reaction)
War Of The Worlds (lots of talking)
The Amityville Horror (no reaction)
The Island (whispering)

Review: This film is a mess, but a fun mess. Everything that was established in the 1st is basically tossed aside in return for an "Exorcist" type possesion plot line. However there are a lot of great scares (Samara popping out of the bathtub, the final scene in the well) and the tension is kept strong throughout

B

Those who have seen The Ring Two: Do you think it closed the story enough for there not to be a The Ring Three? I personally do and was hoping that we could perhaps see a The Ring 0 similar to the Japanese version, however there were so many prequel elements in it I don't know if it will be made.

Rogue: Instead of advancing the story, they butchered it beyond recognition.

They might have to be creative and come up with something new. That might be a good thing.

See I thought they did try something new.

*Spoilers Ahead*

The whole point was that it transended the video tape. If it was all about the video tape then yes it would have been a rehash of the first film. The point was it didn't. Rachel destroyed the tape and the film then went to Samara attempting a new way out into the real world. Granted I thought the whole "into the tv" thing was rather silly, but other then that...

THE RING TWO
4:00pm at Cinemark Lexington Green 8
85% full

Trailers:

THE SKELETON KEY
LORDS OF DOGTOWN
THE ISLAND
WAR OF THE WORLDS
THE AMITYVILLE HORROR
DARK WATER
RED EYE
=D> \:D/

Crowd Reaction: Lots of screams and whispering throughout.

I LOVED this film! It's not as good as the first (one of my all-time favorites), but it comes pretty close with a fascinating storyline, lots of character development, high amounts of tension (I was on the edge of my seat the whole time) and a great lead performance from Naomi Watts. There are also plenty of scares to be had. A must-see!

The Ring Two
5:30 PM
400 seater
At least 90%+, probably sold out.
After the showing, there was a line of about 30 people waiting outside to get in for the next showing. This was still 45 minutes before the next one started.

Trailers:
Fever Pitch - Person gets hit in the face with baseball, lots of laughs. I would like to see movies like this bomb, but, I doubt it.
Lords of Dogtown - No reaction
The Amityville Horror - No reaction
The Skeleton Key - No reaction. Looks like a dud to me.
The Island - Some talking afterwards.

Movie - I loved it. I was expecting it to be well short of the sequel, in fact, I was prepared for it to be a complete disgrace. Although the original was by far my favorite horror film of all time, and one of my favorites of 2002, I was not really anticipating this one much. Imagine my suprise when I found the story to be excellent, and I ended up being entertained to the point where I came to rank this as the second best horror film I've ever seen. Is the film scary? I don't really care, and I don't know; I'm never really scared by horror films. I did believe it to be creepy like the original, and jumped a bit a couple times due to some suprises. However, as I left I heard many say it wasn't nearly as scary as the original, yet many of those same people also said they still enjoyed the movie.

That was perfect. It went to the very heart of the first film. On one hand there is the Samara that is a victim of those who believe she is the cause of many "evil" things. Then there is the Samara who never sleeps, the one who kills. The storyline was, IMO, the perfect natural and logical result of what we saw in the first film. There Rachel had sypathy for her and helped her. Samara's reaction to being treated differently by Rachel then all the others she knew makes perfect sense. I think it also given much more depth to Samara then she had perviously. It was absolutely great IMO.

That means at the end of the first movie she would have been content being Aidan. The conflict where she wants to be a kid instead of a monster makes it a good drama, like you said, but a bad horror movie.

See, I never viewed the first Ring film as much of a "horror", more of a psychological thriller (much like The Village). The second film completely eliminates the "horror" and increases the thriller portion of it.

Guys...the Ring 2 didn't do much at my theater.

I mean, we are one of the Regal theaters that had only one screen of it, and, I don't know...

the 6:50 show didn't sell out till 6:15 (kind of appalling, since there's no other show till 9:50)
the 9:50 show sold out at 7:30 (which is actually really late to sell out, since this is the only prime time show)
and the 12:20 show was only 2/3 full when I left at 10:30.

This actually really bugs me, because I remember the day 8 Mile opened at my theater with 3 screens, all the night shows were sold out except for the midnight BEFORE 7, and the Ring 2 couldn't even manage to sell out the night for one single screen.

From the looks of it, I don't see this movie topping 15 million for Friday, but I'm really hoping that other theaters did OK with this movie. It appears as if my theater didn't lose much business at all, because the spillover was tremendous, and we were very busy until 10PM. Two managers had to jump on register to sell for Constantine, Hitch, Pacifier, Ice Princess did decent early on, and this was after the Ring shows sold out. So I think Regal corp made a good call to make more revenue for themselves by hanging on to the older movies (because they get a lot bigger % of the ticket receipts for movies that have been in theaters for over a month). I think Brandon's and my 50 million predictions are out of the water. Something in the upper 30's to lower 40's seems more likely at this point. But who knows, it's hard to gauge a movie's business based on one screen

I know beforehand that The Ring Two will not be better than The Ring. It's physically impossible. The Ring is the best horror movie of all time, and it's sequel sure as hell won't beat it. I just hope I'm one of the ones that actually *like* it.

You will like it, since it is better than Cursed.

It is far superior to any horror movie made this year. But again I hold The Ring 2 to a higher standard compared to others, since I absolutely loved the first and expected more.

Truth be told, I didn't want to see a horror movie. There is a reason only about a dozen horror films are on my top 400 of all time. I enjoyed all of those BTW, because they were also are thrillers, or sometimes comedies. I loved the original Ring to a large extent because it was just so well made, but mostly because of the thrilling detective story element.

So anyway, I love The Ring Two as a drama and a thriller.

I did have a couple problems with the film. It dragged a bit at times near the end; they should have cut 5-10 minutes off of it. Also, Samara's origins were a bit of a disappointment. Not that it was bad, I was just expecting more. There should have been more to it. I don't know, some twist. The way they build it up in mystery in the first film, there should have been more of a payoff. So, in that way, The Ring Two didn't live up to the original.

What I did love however, was the ending. It left me wondering, had Samara tricked Rachel? Was the entire "into the TV thing" with the well a ploy to get her to think that Aidan was back?

Oh ok JB, thanks. so I guess it wasn't a remake. (I remember reading that on the IMDB the more I think about it...)

That's me exactly! I LOVED The Ring and saw it three times in theaters. It was great. Hypnotic and engrossing and it got better with each viewing on the big screen. The cinematography was the best of the year. Naomi Watts even gave one of the best performances of the year, in my opinion. And I really wanted a sequel. But now that it's come I'm not all that excited. I'm going to see it tomorrow night because I still definitely want to see it and am sure I'll enjoy it quite a bit, but I'm still not DYING to see it. I know it won't be as great as the first. I've figured that all along. Especially with Gore Verbinski gone and the guy behind the atrocious RINGU doing it. It's weird that I'm not incredibly excited though since I did love the first, but I'm just not.

HSX Reports:

"4 screens of RING 2, sold out through 11:25 at the LBC megaplex as of 9:00pm. This theatre also had 4 screens of THE GRUDGE. It is outperforming both that film and HITCH. Definitely think 46 million is a minimum this weekend for it barring a horrible drop off Fri-Sat."

-notfabio

"UA Riverview Stamium 17: 1screen, 5 shows: three sellouts and one +70%
Lowes Cherry Hill: 5 screens, 23 shows: eight sellouts and seven +70%

I smell a +20M Friday (IMHO)"

-BYe (these are theaters in my area. well, in the city)

"7:00 showing
450 seater SOLD OUT "

-Andrew

"Usher Update: RING2 is heading for a $50M+ weekend"
