Every big breakout has had huge Hispanic/Latino appeal this summer and Joker was massive in the Latam markets so feels this is going to be another colossal global hit.

Feels like I’m the only one not getting why it would do this well ($1B+) when the first one already overperformed like crazy.

Gaga as Harley will push this above the first at least domestically. The first did crazy business overseas but if this is at least fine it should do a billion WW.

I mean this movie is only being made because the MCU changed the game and raised the public's expectations of blockbusters, but sure. You know the Van Helsings and Night At The Museum 2s of the world were just so critically beloved and universally acclaimed before Marvel came around and ruined everything.

Not sure how the court room plotline sells and it wouldn't be surprising if Todd Phillips missed here quality wise.

Personally, I like it.

Don't underestimate how many people love the 2019 film. However, because of that I can see this opening huge but dropping like a stone when it isn't what people expected or wanted.

Gaga is going to campaign HARD for that Oscar, knowing the first one gave Joaquin his. It will be a long, unhinged six months of press tour, endless red carpets, and batshit insane quotes like with her last two Oscar campaigns (too bad they snubbed her for Gucci). Probably more entertaining than the movie itself.

Gaga's latest single with Bruno Mars is #1 on Spotify and Apple Music. Supposedly it's a stand-alone and not associated with Joker, but the song's title is "Die with a Smile" (very Joker no?) and she has kind of a subtle clown inspired make-up int he video and artwork. I wouldn't be surprised if they retcon it to be part of the Joker soundtrack now that it's shaping up to be a huge hit. This also means even more hype for the movie and Gaga will be front and centre of pop culture in the next few months.

I think this will open > 150m at this point. it will be more frontloaded than last one for sure. Still will leg it to 400m domestic. OS is more interesting. Joker was uber blockbuster almost everywhere it released. We have to see how the sequel does. Plus this will have China release as well. Exchange rates are mostly worse compared to 1st movie but there is also significant inflation to ticket prices plus Latin American market has grown a lot in past few years. If everything goes well it can go for a huge OS. Bigger than Deadpool.

Isn't Gaga banned in China? A Star is Born and House of Gucci were not released there. They also censored her when she was on the Oscars lol

Reviews are very mid but that was true of the first one as well. What worries me, regarding its box office, is the stuff about it being a meta commentary on the reaction to the first film, possibly being a takedown of the incels that championed the film.

But in this case, didn't the incels kinda get it right? A major theme of the movie was Todd complaining about not being able to make the movies he wants because men aren't allowed to be men anymore and everything has to be part of a franchise. That wasn't subtext, that was the movie. So purposefully alienating the demographic that was supposed to enjoy it the most feels like its gonna lead to Folie A Deux having absolutely terrible legs. :-/

I am concerned at this point. Not sure what Philips was thinking screening it early with the movie they made.

After early reviews I am thinking 110m OW for Joker. Anyway presales are starting next Monday and so I would be able to have better perspective then.

Think it'll still open big. Maybe if Gaga wasn't in it I would think it'd barely do over #1 but I think that will give it an extra must see push.

But yeah, legs will probably be meh at best unless it has its fans like the first one.

I'm predicting a big opener since I think there will be a hidden Joker bro like Venom or Godzilla v Kong type movie.

A pseudo musical courtroom drama is not what the fans of the first one want. I foresee a massive 70% style second weekend drop. I wouldn't be shocked at $120M/$260M type of run
