I'm seeing a lot for "Rent" lately. I think it'll do in the teens for the 5-day weekend. Probably about $15-17 million over the five days.

I always knew it, but an article in the paper this morning reinforced how much of a phenomenon Rent (the play) was. It described it as "a touchstone for a younger generation eager for a show it could embrace as its own." It's completely true, Rent is a huge hit with teens and young adults.
I think the film version will be successful since it'll attract the younger audiences that are huge fans of the show and the older audiences that will (likely) be more open to the film medium.
I totally agree........I think this one is going to surprise alot of people and easily beat all the openers this weekend. Pretty much every female I know wants to see this, should be huge with women obviously.

I'm not sure it has quite wide enough appeal to do that. It really only appeals to women and the art house crowd which would have already saw it.

Wow, I agree with Libs, people are SERIOUSLY underestimating In the Mix. If any Thanksgiving opener went under the radar, I think it would be The Ice Harvest, even though that's my most anticipated movie of the weekend. I still see 12-15 million for it's five day, and wouldn't be surprised if it came ahead of many of the other openers.

Many films do well in limited release but don't hold when they expand.

Not even close to being true. Sith still grossed more on it's first 3 day weekend, and that was AFTER it opened to over 50 million on Thursay.
That's just fanboy delusions and nonsense to even say Harry Potter rivals the Star Wars fanbase, and the numbers will never back that up.

And the Star Wars movies have higher totals because, with the exception of Attack of the Clones, they're better than the Potter movies (so far, each Potter movie gets better). They have more of a lasting effect.

The USA is crazy over Star Wars. I think nothing rivals Star Wars' fanbase. It is pretty much impossible since it has generations of fans. Not even LOTR has the same fanbase, I think.
However, I am happy to say that overseas Harry Potter AND LOTR own Star Wars by far and away fanbase-wise. It'll take Potter about 3 weeks to outgross ROTS in UK and about 3-4 weeks to outgross ROTS in Germany. The same will go for most European countries. In Japan HP4 will own ROTS easily as well.

Woah...Aeon Flux is only tracking at a $12 million debut?
That's lower then I expected but not that surprising given the marketing has just flat-out sucked for it.

BJ screams under estimated they did this with its opening wknd as well, it nearly doubled there 1.5-1.7 prediction, though I bet they were leaning more for the 1.5 Anyway I hope the film easily doubles there lousy prediction
