EMPIRE MAGAZINE: Reviews Phantom
***/5 STARS
http://www.empireonline.co.uk/site/inci ... ?FID=10032
IN A NUTSHELL:
Paris, 1870. A disfigured man (Butler) lurks in the caverns beneath the Opera House, mooning over new ingénue Christine (Rossum). But she only has eyes for dashing Raoul (Wilson), driving the Phantom into a jealous rage.
THE FULL REVIEW:
There have been numerous versions of Gaston Leroux’s 1911 novel The Phantom Of The Opera, but none are more famous  or more successful  than Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical. The second-longest-running musical in history (only Lloyd Webber’s Cats had more durability), it debuted in London’s West End in 1986, and has played to packed houses ever since.
It’s a surprise, then, that it’s taken this long for a movie adaptation of that version to appear. Fans of Lloyd Webber will no doubt think it was worth the wait, while the rest of us may wonder what took so long, since the end result, although entertaining and well-crafted, certainly isn’t on the same breathtaking scale of, say, Alan Parker’s epic Evita.

Cheers for those review links Arch.
The NY Post review had a picture of New Zealand on the same page for some odd reason, but no point of reference that I can see! :?

They are basically a collection of all the reviews i've posted so far......just makes for easier viewing that's all......
All the big magazines and creditable sources have at least given Phantom a mixed rating.........the "dissapointing reviews" so far are mainly from people who have seen Phantom at a pre-release screening somwhere......

Meh..I never really pay attention to what the critics say anyway! I always make my own judgement and right now I am just as excited to see this film despite what is being said by some. It calls to me.

I still have as yet, NOT seen any Phantom trailers in theatres......The Grudge didn't have it last week and i doubt i'll be seeing anything until Oceans 12 on Dec 9th.....hmmm.....i wants to hear it in full glory....sigh

Speaking of Alexander, it's actually good for Phantom now that Warners original Oscar candidate has burned in both reviews and box-office.
This elevates Phantom into Warner's number 1 spot with Million Dollar Baby second, this is extremely vital when the race is open for everyone.
I like to picture the race in terms of 3 categories, biggies, indies and foreigners.....
Biggies: The Aviator, Phantom, Closer, Million Dollar Baby
Indies: Ray, Finding Neverland, Spanglish, Kinsey, Sideways, Hotel Rwanda
Foreigners: A Very Long Engagement, Mar Adentro, The Passion of The Christ,
Million Dollar Baby is the big mover on the top group with early word saying its fantastic with big chances in Picture, Direction and Actor (C.Eastwood).....he might well be riding the Mystic River wave after it was overshadowed by ROTK last year......
The Top 5 will probably come from the shortlist above....i see the following at the momment:
* The Aviator - coming good now
* The Phantom of the Opera - reviews are not bad, and is one of the frontrunners
* Finding Neverland
* Kinsey
* Closer or Million Dollar Baby

The pre-release screenings are starting to creep up for Phantom.......very good news as this shows that the buzz is building and there is confidence in the movie......
'Neverland' postponed; 'Phantom' moved up
BY BOB CURTRIGHT
The Wichita Eagle
http://www.phantomfans.net/index.php?showtopic=4561
The movie companies are playing musical chairs with the holiday films for Wichita.
"Finding Neverland," an artsy look at the life of "Peter Pan" creator J.M. Barrie, was scheduled to open here Wednesday but was pulled by Miramax on Monday.
"The Phantom of the Opera," the lavish film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary Broadway musical, wasn't scheduled to open here until January. But suddenly Wichita is a "select city" for a Dec. 22 opening.
And Nicole Kidman's controversial drama "Birth," which opened weeks ago in other markets, will finally arrive on Dec. 10, exclusively at Premiere Palace. Kidman stars as a widow pursued by a 10-year-old boy who claims to be the reincarnation of her dead husband.
That's the word from Tim Patton, the Dallas-based booker for Warren Theatres.
Patton said Miramax pulled "Finding Neverland" from wide release after it experienced a less-than-stellar opening in some major markets.
"I think Miramax missed the boat by pulling 'Neverland' after the weekend grosses in other markets," he said. "They now feel they need to roll it out slower."
The film, starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, can't be treated like a blockbuster because it can't compete on the razzle-dazzle level. Rather, it must built its audience slowly, Patton said. The film has not yet been rescheduled for Wichita but Patton is pushing for Dec. 3.
Meanwhile, Wichita will open "The Phantom of the Opera" on the Wednesday before Christmas exclusively at the eastside Warren Theatre, thanks to a change by Warner Bros.
"When a film is adult and upscale, the 13th Avenue Warren has proved time and time again that it delivers," Patton said.

I just found out that Reading Cinema's here in NZ will be playing it as soon as the 30th Dec., whilst others are still the 1st of the New Year! Perhaps Boxing day is still feasible, but methinks it to be too wishful as A Very Long Engagement is the front runner on that day!

Arch, those movie clips you posted are fantastic! I truly wish you had already sean the play or the telly reproductions so we could discuss and compare more, but I do not wish to spoil it for you!
The latter Spanish posters are brill as well! I'll be the first to say too, that although I'm very much into women, the Phantom is -HOT-! Everything about him! Much better than Raoul imho! If I were Christine .................
Ok...I'll shut up now before I land myself in a hot lava bath! LOL

That's a good strategy, i guess only the major cities will receive it early.....
Putting Phantom up against A Ver Long Engagement should be no problem, i doubt it will be a strong performer outside of Europe like Amelie.
I'm starting to get quite worried about our own release date for phantom.....Movie Marshal still has Phantom absent from the Boxing Day weekend.......
To complicate things, Ray has now been moved up to Boxing day weekend as well.......the slate is so competitive......as follows:
Blade: Trinity New Line Cinema (Roadshow)
The Incredibles Walt Disney (BVI)
Meet the Fockers Universal/DreamWorks (UIP)
Ray Universal (UIP)
Being Julia -(limited) Sony Classics (Sony)
A Very Long Engagement -(limited) WB Independent
space
All of this on Dec 26.......sheesh......maybe Blade Trinity might want to move.....

Is there a movie clip out of the 4 which don't show any plot lines, simple singing maybe?......i do not deny that my heart greatly desired this...... .......but must resist the power of the "phantom"..... :x
