Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $215 million
I wonder if it'll cross $200 million this weekend. Thanks to Mother's Day its chances are rather good. And it's still playing in 3,000+ theatres in its 7th (!) weekend!

I had forgotten about the Iron Man/Paramount connection as well which potentially bumps it up more too.

Right...I didn't think about that either. And then Shrek Forever After might have the same effect.
Damn, it'd be amazing if this broke $220 million!

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $215 million
Another terrific weekend for it. $201,093,000 after seven weeks:
- $14 million ahead of Monsters Vs. Aliens
- $5.5 million behind Kung Fu Panda
- $9 million behind WALL-E
$215 million is a lock.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $215 million
It's just 17% down from last week and will once again see no direct competition this weekend.
With a $202,241,491 total at the moment, it is $15 million ahead of Monsters Vs. Aliens and will end up $20+ million ahead of it.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $215 million
$207,764,000 after its 8th weekend:
- $17 million ahead of Monsters Vs. Aliens
- $1.2 million behind Kung Fu Panda
- $6.3 million behind WALL-E
Catching up pretty fast.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
I think so this will cross those marks now. I am hoping for this to get somewhere near 230M but that will be difficult with the release of Shrek4. TS3 will be the final blow for it.
For 45M OW this is a serious contender for this year's best legs.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
220m or more may be asking too much. It wasn't long ago when everyone projected an easy 800m+ total for Avatar after its astounding drops early this year. There also was that 275m+ club on TBS and it ended up 20m less.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Well after the rerelease $800+ million might still happen for Avatar.
And How to Train Your Dragon is about $12 million away from $220 million, coming off a $5.1 million weekend.
Shrek 4 will hurt it, but being also Paramount/DW it might give it a little bump (see Iron Man 2 and Shutter Island).

I thought Dragon was making lower than that this weekend (wanted to check on BOM, but it's still down). With that, I think it has a chance.

It will depend on the size of the boost, if any, it can get from Shrek Forever After.

Many theaters will still keep Dragon on 1 3D screen so I can still see it making over $3M next weekend.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Monsters Vs. Aliens did $1,459,198 the weekend before Up opened, doing far worse than Dragon is doing now. After Up opened, it still made another $4.3 million. Which would put Dragon at $213+ million (assuming it makes around $1+ million more before Friday).
However MVA was coming off a far worse weekend (and a holiday weekend at that) and played at less than 500 theatres for almost the entire remainder of its run.
Keeping that in mind, don't you think Dragon can muster an additional $7 million?

I added a new poll.
Frankly, I think there's still a chance it'll overtake WALL-E.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Its Monday was 7.6% down from its last. Even if it loses 75% of its 3D screens, I sitll don't see it dropping more than 55%...And it'll rebound over the Memorial Day weekend again.

I am in. I think it has a shot at 220M. Though it could come really close and stop its journey.
For now I think it will end up at 221M

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
The thing all of us have no idea of is the fact that there's never been a weekend where an animated movie fought against it's own studio.
The question is, does Dreamworks want to boost Dragon or not? There is nothing left to attain, but who knows?

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Especially not when it was about 3D screens.
A similar example, though, is when Dead Man's Chest opened and despite its HUGE start Cars still held quite well (both Disney).

But Pirates and Cars are supposedly slightly different demos.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Shrek 4 and How to Train your Dragon will almost surely all be paired together in drive-ins thus help boosting Dragon's drive-in admissions. Even if 60% of the cars leave after Shrek 4, Dragon will still get to split half the drive-in box office.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon's race to $220 million
Brandon Gray has written an article on How to Train Your Dragon's run, which manages to be impressively positive about the film's run while still retaining that classic Gray cynicism (Though this time its aimed at the media that tried downplaying its initial success, which is funny considering how often Gray does this himself).

According to the BOM article, it has 243 3D sites left this weekend. That's qite a harsh drop. I wonder how much the Dreamworks bump will make up for that.
On the other hand with a $209,089,707 total by now, it is:
- $17.5 million ahead of Monsters Vs. Aliens
- $0.8 million behind Kung Fu Panda
- $6.2 million behind WALL-E
It should be tracking ahead of Kung Fu Panda by the end of the weekend.
