Re: China Box Office
OD: over 200m yuan ($30m+) for RE, 40m yuan ($6m) for Assassin's Creed.
If the estimate holds, it will be the 5th biggest OD ever and 3rd biggest for a Hollywood release, behind FF7 and Warcraft.

Wow @ Resident Evil
I remember when Paul W.S. Anderson held a townhall in the mid 90s with gamers. He wanted to know what they would want to see in a Mortal Kombat movie. 20 years later and he's still going strong with videogame adaptations.

Re: China Box Office
I just don't understand Chinese moviegoing. How does a film like Resident Evil...some would barely call it one...tank in the US yet explode in China? Was there some ultra marketing or ultra saturation? What's the story? Is Resident Evil really THAT popular in China?

Re: China Box Office
What's to understand? China likes fun, sit-back-and-relax entertainment...just like Americans do! The Force Awakens isn't a thought-provoking dramatic masterpiece.

Re: China Box Office
Yeah isn't it just simple? There is a cultural difference. Chinese people seem to like the Video Game Adaptations maybe because they can relate to those more, though I am not sure how popular RE games are in China but I believe they would be. Warcraft also did huge so its not a surprise RE broke out.

Some do well, some don't do well.

Re: China Box Office
I didn't say all of them ofcourse and I was going by the game's popularity plus the cultural difference in China. Regardless I do believe Chinese people have more likability to video-game movies than US, I don't remember any video-game adaptation doing more than $200m (I believe the biggest is Angry Bird movie which is not entirely a video-game adaptation).

Re: China Box Office
Chinese guys love video-games. So do American guys. But China's population is four times the size, so expect four times the grosses. It's not that difficult. The US and China are so similar with regards to their viewing preferences.
And in what way is The Angry Birds Movie not entirely a video-game adaptation? It is based on a video-game. It was adapted into a film. What am I missing?

Re: China Box Office
I don't think that's correct assumption either, not every movie does 4 times what US movies does. With your same example AC should have done like $200m+ in China with that ratio.
I thought TAB was more like an App for smartphones rather than those LAN based games that run only on your computers, though I'm sure TAB could certainly be played on computers.

Re: China Box Office
It's a game for smartphones. Does it matter where the game is played for it to be called a video-game movie?
And obviously not all films are going to make four times the gross in China. All I'm saying is people shouldn't be surprised when they do. They certainly have the population.

At this point I don't think anybody is surprised at China's potential to produce a huge gross (by any market's standards), it's more a matter of some confusion as to which films end up seeing huge numbers to a degree that's largely disproportionate with most every other foreign market. It can appear to be random and inexplicable at times (although I think it's exciting), and naturally we seek out an explanation for unanticipated success. I mean, you can't exactly say this isn't a surprise, right? The previous film only grossed $17.8m over there (ranking #59 for 2013).

Re: China Box Office
I think you can look at it as that the Chinese certainly have certain a certain taste, ultimately if you look at it I think the quality or type of film has very little to do with it's final gross. In China a lot comes down to suitable release date and usually 60% of it's total gross is made in its first weekend.

To people not in the know, it is a surprise. I'm also not really in the know. But in hindsight I can see it makes total sense.

A Dog's Purpose may be on its way to beating its domestic gross in China. WTF went right with this one in China?
