I think if it doesn't cross $200m people will see it as a disappointment, which is still ludicrious, but at this point Pj is like Spielberg, people have high expecations. Remember Minority Report, a disappointment even though it crossed $100m.
I think global intake is a better judge, maybe KK does less business here the LOTR, but maybe it does better overseas.

Well I didnt think i would say this but count me in the club.
It didnt really hit me till the other night seeing GOF. The Kong trailer on th ebig screen had everyone silent. It gave me that eiree feeling I had before Titanic opened (quality movie + CGI) by a famous director. Love story - even though it may be rather odd. I think through the trailers they do want it to be a mish mosh of Titanic/Jurassic Park/ET. It could work.
Women will go for the forbidden romance angle - and men will go for the action - with alot from both genders appreciating both.
The hype is building up - so im going to up my prediction to $340m.
I would go higher but repeat viewing wont match Titanic and I think Narnia will hurt it somewhat.
So count me in.
Though the opening may not surpass Narnia - the total gross seems likely.

##### DRUDGE REPORT ##### TUE DEC 06, 2005 07:45:32 ET #####
KING KONG TO CHALLENGE ALL-TIME BOXOFFICE CHAMP
'APE WITH A HEART MAKES GROWN MEN CRY'
$1,845,034,000 worldwide and $600,788,188 are the all-time boxoffice records for a single movie, TITANIC, first released on December 19, 1997.
Now roars along another December blockbuster, KING KONG, a film many top Hollywood executives predict will break the record!
The movie opens wide as Victoria Lake next Wednesday, but recent screenings by UNIVERSAL have left the audience cheering and sobbing.
"Grown men around me were crying," says one Hollywood insider.
"Yes, I think this will do TITANIC numbers. It is going to be a huge movie."
Complaints the Peter Jackson movie starts slow and is too long [more than 3 hours] will fill critics' columns.
"The human relationships are s**t ... the dialogue is piss poor and there is a scene of Jamie Bell shooting gigantic bugs off of Adrian Brody with a tommy gun ... those are the bad parts," says a Hollywood reporter. "But.... the scenes between Kong and Naomi Watts tug at the heart strings big time. And the final scene was just great! There were one too many longing looks between the ape and Watts ... but the audience around me ate it up."
It's not gonna happen, no matter how many times I've been wrong in the past on box office before anyone points this out.. This movie will NOT beat TITANIC and this is nothing more than a publicity stunt for the movie saying "Grown Men were crying" is outlandish.. Truth of it is, is when I saw it, only a few people clapped at the end in a auditorium that was filled up and no one was crying.. Will see though..

From his review
emotion between Naomi Watts and the title charcater himself, particularly 1 scene that YES, did bring a tear to my eye invloving the 2 in Central Park on the Ice.. It was very very touching and watching this scene, you knew the inevitable fate this animal was about to experience and that was sad
You sure you wrote this review?
Either way BKB, you're either a liar or a little bitch cry baby Baby crying? Awwwwwww BKB, come here i'll hold you

I did have a tear in my eye during the scene in Central Park, YES, this is true, I did and this scene was touching, but when I read "Grown Men Were Crying", I'm lead to believe it was throughout the entire movie which is how I'm reading this, they were literally sobbing.. My apologies for not making this clearer..

How well this does might in some way depend on how strong Narnia opens five days earlier. What are your thoughts? Does the performance of Narnia have any effect on how well Kong does?

Personally, I think Narnia will have little to no effect on Kong. Not to say Narnia won't be successful, it's just Kong is on another level (apparently).

I think Minority Report was still a disappointment. I mean it had Spielber, Cruise, a big budget and great reviews. You could at least expect $150 million.

Let me state this clearly...... KONG WILL NOT MAKE OR GET NEAR 300 MILLION DOMESTIC
Certainly people who see the trailer are getting gaga over it but maybe they aren't aware this film is 3hrs long and WILL drag and Be boring in spots and have scenes that go on too long and some that should have been cut altogether. KK will probably have a very profitable first week but when the avg moviegoer starts hearing about the length and etc etc people will get turned off. This movie is only worth seeing once and the "hollywood insider's" quote about grown men crying is Laughable as well. This is a limited tear jerker even though the scenes with Naomi and KK do jump off the screen there are too many side elements that get in the way for plot movement of course but some just are overdone to the Nth degree.
