And I see you're predicting Evangelion 3.0 to come in second this weekend. I hope it does. Oh yeah, no doubt. It's kind of painful to see that happen...thrice (first with HP, then Avengers). Harry Potter was even tougher because it conjured up over 100,000 admissions on opening day and didn't pass $800,000 in gross. April 25 actuals 1. Iron Man 3 - $788,304 ( opening day actual) 2. Evangelion 3.0 - $16,745 (no accumulated gross given) ( actual) 3. Drug War - $497,198 4. Conspirators - $12,623/$1,288,192 ( actual) 5. Finding Mr. Right - $6,569/$1,201,778 ( actual) 6. Oblivion - $6,440/$1,914,086 ( actual) We Were There: First Love - $1,287 ( opening day actual) Together - $103 ( opening day actual) The Host - $2,060/$177,755 ( actual) Excellent for Iron Man 3 despite missing out on the record bythatmuch. Evangelion 3.0 did well on Thursday. It will clear $100,000. Drug War fell 75%, not great. Conspirators did pretty well. Finding Mr. Right is still doing great. Ouch for Oblivion. We Were There: First Love did pretty bad. Yikes for Together.

Re: HK 4/25 THU: Iron Man 3 is denied the non-holiday OD rec
Seeing a lot of this today While Iron Man 3 basks in the glory of this weekend, something special is taking place over at Festival Walk. 7 3D morning shows tomorrow and 9 total for Iron Man 3. That is a record. Lots of Saturday morning shows are more than 80% full. I'm giving Iron Man 3 a 60% chance of beating The Avengers' Saturday admissions tomorrow.

Good for Evangelion 3.0. It will be #2 this weekend. That's a big increase for Conspirators. Amazing hold for Tokyo Family. Onto Iron Man 3... Let's analyze this hold. Iron Man 3 increased 5% while Avengers 13% on Friday. On the surface it looks like Iron Man 3 held worse but it actually held better. Avengers' gain does not include its midnights while Iron Man 3's does. Here's where the two films stand.
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
The Avengers | 67,741 | 76,410 | 149,832 | 130,495 | 424,478 |
Iron Man 3 | 76,778 | 80,693 | | | 157,471 |
Gap | 9,037 | 13,320 | -136,512 | -267,007
Iron Man 3 widened the gap on Friday and it is expected to increase that gap through the weekend. And the Iron Man 2 & 3 Comparison...
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
Iron Man 2 | | 56,582 | 96,078 | 76,730 | 229,390 |
Iron Man 3 | 76,778 | 80,693 | | | 157,471 |
Gap | 76,778 | 100,889 | 4,811 | -71,919
Although it is behind in admissions, Iron Man 3 has already passed Iron Man 2's OW in only 2 days.
| Saturday adm. | (so far) | | | April 27 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | -- | 92,236 | -- | +97.7% |
2 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | -- | 2,580 | -- | +53.6% |
3 | Drug War | 3,008 | 877 | -70.8% | +91.5% |
4 | Conspirators | 3,343 | 808 | -75.8% | +43.8% |
5 | Oblivion | 6,572 | 708 | -89.2% | +157.5% |
6 | Finding Mr. Right | 1,501 | 676 | -55.0% | +31.3% |
7 | Tokyo Family | 672 | 588 | -12.5% | +133.3% |
8 | Touch of the Light | 409 | 210 | -48.7% | -- |
9 | I Give It A Year | 763 | 170 | -77.7% | -18.3% |
10 | We Were There: First Love | -- | 166 | -- | -4.6% |
Absolutely INSANE number for Iron Man 3. Biggest Saturday pre-sales ever. It had nearly identical admissions increases from Friday to Saturday pre-sales as The Avengers. I'm thinking this will hit 155,000 admissions today with a chance at 160,000.

Iron Man 3 is the 5th movie to cross 100,000 admissions on opening Saturday (Toy Story 3, Transformers 3, Harry Potter 7-2 and The Avengers). Amazing.

The race is over.

Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | -- | 136,469 | -- | +69.1% |
2 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | -- | 4,054 | -- | +44.1% |
3 | Conspirators | -- | 2,760 | -- | +10.3% |
4 | Drug War | -- | 2,652 | -- | +5.5% |
5 | Finding Mr. Right | -- | 2,224 | -- | +49.4% |
6 | Oblivion | -- | 1,813 | -- | +38.4% |
7 | Tokyo Family | -- | 1,139 | -- | +74.4% |

9 | Touch of the Light | -- | 445 | -- | -- |
10 | We Were There: First Love | -- | 444 | -- | +28.3% |
Evangelion 3.0 did pretty well. Conspirators appears to be winning the battle over Drug War for 3rd. Conspirators admissions have pulled away from Drug War's. Race for #5 is even tighter with Finding Mr. Right and Oblivion still pretty much deadlocked. Sunday will determine who gets in. Great pre-sales for Iron Man 3 but walk-ins were unwilling to sit in the front row. Most showtimes were 85-90% full. That's good but not as great as what The Avengers did. A couple of shows did manage to sell out though.
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
The Avengers | 67,741 | 76,410 | 149,832 | 130,495 | 424,478 |
Iron Man 3 | 76,778 | 80,693 | 136,469 | | 293,940 |
Gap | 9,037 | 13,320 | -43 | -130,538
Iron Man 3's weekday advantage is completely wiped out by Avengers' Saturday. There's a slight chance Iron Man 3 will keep with Avengers' on Sunday but it's slim.
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
Iron Man 2 | | 56,582 | 96,078 | 76,730 | 229,390 |
Iron Man 3 | 76,778 | 80,693 | 136,469 | | 293,940 |
Gap | 76,778 | 100,889 | 141,280 | 64,550
Winner: Iron Man 3.

Day 4
| Sunday adm. | (so far) | | | April 28 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | -- | 88,349 | -- | -4.2% |
2 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | -- | 2,006 | -- | -22.2% |
3 | Oblivion | -- | 913 | -- | +29.0% |
4 | Conspirators | -- | 766 | -- | -5.2% |
5 | Finding Mr. Right | -- | 673 | -- | -0.4% |
6 | Tokyo Family | -- | 628 | -- | +6.8% |

9 | I Give It A Year | -- | 239 | -- | +40.6% |
10 | Great Expectations | -- | 234 | -- | -- |
Good hold for Iron Man 3. Evangelion 3.0 lost a lot of admissions in pre-sales on Sunday but it will end up in 2nd this weekend. Big spike for Oblivion. If it can keep up this pace today, it will beat Finding Mr. Right for 5th. Nice bump for Tokyo Family. Holding really well. Huge fall for Drug War. A 45% drop in pre-sales is unheard of. I'm thinking it might be an error. The Croods re-appears after not being in the top 10 the whole weekend. As of this post, Iron Man 3 has already crossed 100,000. More showings are selling out today and those that didn't are 95% full which is what Avengers did back then. Did I say 9 was the record? Because now it's 10 (including the 2D morning showing). Still, 9 3D morning shows is crazy. It got more morning shows on the holiday than the opening weekend which never happens. Avengers' didn't have this number of morning shows on the May 1 holiday. It's even crazier since Trance comes out May 1.

Re: HK: Iron Man 3 OW record within reach; increases on Sund
Admissions are still ongoing but Iron Man 3 is putting up a huge fight on Sunday. It increased from Saturday! Speculation is that there is some mainlander effect today because other films have seen big increases as well. Here's my new article if you haven't seen it yet. Plus my wrap-up of this weekend ( alternate link). Final admissions to come later.

Riggs wrote: It increased from saturday? Is that very unusual? It's a bit unusual. Of all 3D blockbuster releases in the past 3 years, only 2 (Toy Story 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man) increased on Sunday. Toy Story 3 is an animated release so families are more likely to watch it on Sunday and The Amazing Spider-Man had a holiday on Sunday. Iron Man 3 had no holiday and is not an animated release.

It was close but Iron Man 3 lost to The Avengers by 300 admissions on the day before the May 1 holiday. It either passed 6m today or is extremely close to it. Tomorrow should be another exceptional day and it will definitely beat The Avengers' opening week record.

Iron Man 3 is looking good at all theater chains. A lot of theaters have cut down on Iron Man 3's 3D showings and given it more 2D showtimes. This is usually due to the distributor, they usually do not give many 2D showings at a theater on opening weekend unless its one of the worse off ones or moviegoers at that particular location have been known to reject 3D over 2D. Pre-sales remain fairly high although Thursday and Friday have been muted because of the Wednesday holiday. Thursday will see a small bump from the Wednesday holiday so a weekend above 2m is expected. Trance is getting a lot of theaters, releasing at least very wide. With its HK bow on May 1, it will be #2 this weekend. Pre-sales have been on the weaker side. The Big Wedding is behind Trance in theater count and pre-sales. Running at a brisk 90 minutes, this short comedy will the de facto #3. Platinum Data is a semi-wide release. Pre-sales have looked bad. No and We Were There: True Love are both limited releases. No is outperforming We Were There: True Love at this point. Holdover Evangelion 3.0 will stay in theaters for a 2nd weekend. After a good opening weekend, this has the capability of reaching $300,000 but only if it has a good hold. Finding Mr. Right will keep on showing at Broadway/AMC. All Broadway/AMC theaters showing this on Wednesday will continue to show on Thursday/Friday. Big loser seems to be Oblivion and Conspirators. Even some Broadway/AMC theaters have decided to take out Oblivion in favor of Finding Mr. Right or a new release. Conspirators seems to be losing steam against Drug War and Finding Mr. Right. Theaters are likely keeping Drug War and Finding Mr. Right on due to increasing ticket sales from the Mainlander push this week.

Iron Man 3 opening week admissions: 693,495 Iron Man 3 opening week estimate: $7,340,000 (record) Iron Man 3 made 97% of The Avengers May 1 holiday admissions. It's losing the battle against The Avengers heading into its 2nd week. After its Sunday increase, I didn't expect such a quick turnaround. Nevertheless, it breaks another record. Avengers made 56% of its gross in its first 7 days. If Iron Man 3 has the same % breakdown in gross, it will make 13m. Strong opening day for Trance.

Iron Man's frontloadedness is showing itself now. Its 2nd Thursday pre-sales admissions made up 89.7% of The Avengers 2nd Thursday pre-sales admissions. 2m is still happening. Openers dominated the top 5 despite the biggest prize being out of reach. After a strong opening day with the holiday, Trance comes back down to Earth. WOM seems very positive at the moment. Opening day might turn out to be its best day of its entire run. If that occurs, it is looking at $200,000 this weekend. If positive WOM seeps in and general audiences are interested, this could go higher with about $250,000. The Big Wedding is a good counterprogramming choice for females. But Iron Man 3 will be a viable choice for females with the romantic subplot. Iron Man 3 is tapping into almost every genre and demographic besides very young children. This is headed for $125,000. Platinum Data is a semi-wide release out as another different offering to Iron Man 3. This sci-fi thriller doesn't really have any sci-fi worth watching than Iron Man 3 or a thriller that is more intriguing than Trance so I don't see it doing well outside its small niche audience. Finding Mr. Right is holding on even with direct competition from The Big Wedding. Let's see how far the Mainland push will help FMR this week. Huge collapse for Evangelion. It did what it set to do though. It has already beaten the 1st and 2nd in the series. Even with that huge drop, it will still make $200,000. Exceptional hold for Searching for Sugar Man.

Re: HK: Iron Man 3 $4.59m OW; on pace to beat The Avengers
That's really good for Trance, considering it's rated III (Under 18 not allowed).

2 | Trance | -- | 5,050 | -- |

Excellent for Trance. Very impressed by its admissions today. It seems headed for $210,000 and $285,000 for the 5-day (including Tuesday previews). It is overperforming in HK. The Big Wedding is looking slightly better. Adjusting its prediction to $140,000. Still not that great for it. Platinum Data had an OK opening day considering the number of theaters and screens it is playing in. If it's frontloaded like most Japanese films though, its opening weekend could be pretty low. Finding Mr. Right is clinging to the top 5. There was a slight mainland bump that pushed its admissions a little higher this week. Similar thing happened with Drug War although that is losing a lot more week to week. Huge fall for Evangelion. I still think $200,000 will happen. No opened in 3 theaters. Nothing worthy to report here. Conspirators took a huge dive but as the previous Detective films have shown us, these drops later on in its run are nothing new. Tokyo Family suffered heavier losses this week with Trance and No coming out but it's still a good hold. For Iron Man 3...
| Daily admissions (2nd WKD) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
The Avengers | 29,554 | 39,463 | 76,120 | 69,356 | 214,493 |
Iron Man 3 | 35,951 | | | | 35,951 |
Gap | 6,397 | -33,066 | -109,186 | -178,542
It's a good hold. It left The Avengers in the dust. Huge 6,000+ admissions advantage heading into Friday. WOM is settling in at 88% which is a bit higher than The Avengers' WOM. It should be able at least 2.5m this weekend. 2.6m is where I think it will end up this weekend. If that happens, it would rank 2nd to Avatar for the biggest 2nd weekend on record. It only needs to clear 2.3m for it to slide into 2nd so that is pretty much sewn up. Does it have a shot at Avatar? Not counting it out but I need to see actuals first.

Holy hell Batman Iron Man. Very good hold. It could hit anywhere from 45,000-50,000 admissions today. Nice jump for Trance. Standard increase for The Big Wedding. Looks like Platinum Data is frontloaded. Good bump for Finding Mr. Right. Nice hold for We Were There: True Love.

Re: HK 5/2 THU: IM3 destroys The Avengers; Trance astonishes
April 2 Actuals
1. Iron Man 3 - $375,032 ($2.91m HK)/$7,811,240 ($60.61m HK) 2. Trance - $32,219/$114,700 (opening day actual) 3. The Big Wedding - $21,909 (opening day actual) 4. Platinum Data - $9,408/$18,042 (opening day actual) 5. Finding Mr. Right - $3,737/$1,266,861 (opening day actual) 6. Drug War - $3,479/$617,321 7. Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo - $3,350/$166,251
Other totals Conspirators - $1,234,642 Tokyo Family - $72,171
Huge 2nd Thursday for Iron Man 3. 100m HK is locked. It'll beat The Avengers for 3rd. 2nd will be harder since Titanic grossed over 15m back in 1997.
Trance had a surprising Wednesday. Thursday was very good as well.
Disappointing for The Big Wedding. Iron Man 3 ate into its gross.

Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | 80,693 | 45,709 | -43.4% | +27.1% |

7 | No | -- | 512 | -- | +12.0% |
8 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | 2,813 | 468 | -83.4% | +34.9% |
9 | Conspirators | 2,503 | 359 | -85.7% | +29.1% |
10 | Tokyo Family | 653 | 328 | -49.8% | -10.4% |
Very good hold for Iron Man 3. Solid increase for Trance. Better for The Big Wedding but Friday sees bigger gains for romance movies. Platinum Data is frontloaded. Finding Mr. Right saw a nice push. No is doing pretty well. The achievement for No is, in contrast, pulling away viewers from Tokyo Family. Thursday saw more walk-ins for Tokyo Family than Friday.

10 | Oblivion | 708 | 111 | -84.3% | -- |
Iron Man 3 soars on Saturday. Standard stuff for Trance and The Big Wedding. Platinum Data Saturday pre-sales looks like its a correction for Friday. Good for No. Fantastic for We Were There Part 2.
| Weekend Projections | | | May 2 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | Iron Man 3 | $2,575,000 | -45.2% | $10,010,000 |
2 | Trance | $215,000 | -- | $300,000 |
3 | The Big Wedding | $140,000 | -- | $140,000 |
4 | Platinum Data | $55,000 | -- | $63,500 |
5 | Finding Mr. Right | $25,000 | -39.9% | $1,288,000 |
If Iron Man 3 pulls off that gross this weekend, it will be the fastest film to hit 10m. The Avengers took either 15 or 16 days to pull it off so even if Iron Man 3 doesn't do it on Sunday, it will beat the record on Monday. Solid opening for Trance. The Big Wedding marched to a disappointing opening. Platinum Data's opening weekend is average. Finding Mr. Right keeps holding on.

Re: HK 5/2 WKD PRO: IM3 to become fastest 10m film in 2 week
I have updated the April 25 recap with some corrections. Please see it for more details or check the records on the first page.
| Saturday adm. | | | | May 4 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | 136,469 | 82,918 | -39.2% | +81.4% |
2 | Trance | -- | 9,500 | -- | +37.5% |
3 | The Big Wedding | -- | 6,493 | -- | +45.5% |
4 | Platinum Data | -- | 2,752 | -- | +86.8% |
5 | Finding Mr. Right | 2,224 | 1,137 | -48.9% | +34.9% |
6 | No | -- | 831 | -- | +62.3% |
7 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | 4,054 | 760 | -81.3% | +62.4% |
8 | Conspirators | 2,760 | 650 | -76.4% | +81.1% |
9 | Tokyo Family | 1,139 | 558 | -51.0% | +70.1% |
10 | Drug War | 2,652 | 524 | -80.2% | +1.9% |
Pretty good for Iron Man 3. Not bad for Trance. The Big Wedding isn't doing great. Platinum Data had an excellent increase on Saturday but it could be a massive correction on Friday's part. Finding Mr. Right and Drug War had the worst increases of the top 10 on Saturday. Safe to say that the Mainland push is now over. Good hold for Finding Mr. Right though. Apart from last weekend, it has never dropped more than 43% in its entire run. This will be its 4th weekend out of 5 that it's held more than half of its business from the previous weekend. I'm liking No this weekend with admissions but actuals tell another story. Apparently, it made only $900 on Thursday from 366 admissions? Might be a typo. As far as the 2nd weekend battle between Iron Man 3 and The Avengers is looking...
| Daily admissions (2nd WKD) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
The Avengers | 29,554 | 39,463 | 76,120 | 69,356 | 214,493 |
Iron Man 3 | 35,951 | 45,709 | 82,918 | | 164,578 |
Gap | 6,397 | 12,643 | 19,441 | -49,915
Iron Man 3 has ended each day this weekend with a 6,000+ advantage. That gap should grow bigger on Sunday where Iron Man 3 should hold slightly better than The Avengers.
| Sunday adm. | (so far) | | | May 5 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Iron Man 3 | 88,349 | 46,219 | -47.7% | +2.5% |
2 | Trance | -- | 2,539 | -- | +3.5% |
3 | The Big Wedding | -- | 2,512 | -- | +16.6% |
4 | Platinum Data | -- | 1,212 | -- | -14.8% |
5 | Finding Mr. Right | 673 | 378 | -43.8% | +14.5% |
6 | No | -- | 354 | -- | +2.9% |
7 | Tokyo Family | 628 | 351 | -44.1% | +24.9% |
8 | Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo | 2,006 | 263 | -86.9% | -20.8% |
9 | Searching for Sugar Man | -- | 208 | -- | -- |
10 | Thérèse Desqueyroux | -- | 179 | -- | -- |
Iron Man 3 is flexing its muscles now. 2 Japanese films dove hard on Sunday. Don't really know why.
