 The Ring 2:What went wrong?
I was almost positive that the movie would of open to 45 million dollars. What went wrong? Was it the bad reviews affecting the movie? Was it because of way too many horror movies in the beginning of January or February that hurt the movies potential? Is it because people are sick of PG-13 horrors? Is it because now when we see Samura we think of that twitchy lady from the Grudge? Should we blame The Grudge on Ring 2's downfall? Or was it because Ring 2 really was a bad movie? It looks like it will barely barely pass 100 million now

A combination of all of the above.
When The Ring first hit, it was unique. Seems every week now we get some variation of the same old ghost story. And the sequel sucked bullocks. But that won't go into effect until WOM hits. PG-13 horror has ran it's course.

I think if The Ring Two had been released last October before The Grudge then it would have grossed $60+ million opening weekend. The Grudge received horrible WOM which I think ended up affecting The Ring Two (been there done that feel). Plus the overload of horrors this year has hurt it.
Still, $15 million opening day is not bad at all, and it will still cross $100 million.

Exactly. I do think, though, that the negative reviews seriously dampened the excitement and buzz that was building for it.
I'm looking for R rated horror to hit big the rest of the year. I just think people are tired of this PG13 ghost story formula.

Negative reviews didn't seem to stop Meet the Fockers from earning far more then the original.

It's a different situation, though.
The bad WOM for Ring Two started within the horror community and worked it's way out, which is a death knell for most horror films.

When did this start, and how would it have affected opening day?

It started as early as Tuesday at most horror sites.
I'd say four days of bad WOM would hurt an opening day.

Maybe, but I do find it a bit hard to believe that it could have a huge effect. I suppose though that sometimes bad WOM can come in the form of a movie being what it isn't supposed to be. I certainly don't think it was poorly made, but it wasn't exactly a horror film.

I think the cool premise was gone. I've never seen the Ring, but to me what was interesting was the tape. The Ring Two's trailers focused on Samara instead. It didn't get a lot of the mainstream audience or people who thought the Ring was OK, it just got the big fans of The Ring. That's still a lot of people, but not enough for 60 million.

I think that a lot of the problems are all of the loose ends. I was just reading on another message board about the numerous holes that were left in the film and I have to agree with them. It just seems like the writers cared more about just writing a movie then creating a true sequel.

I personally think that the first movie was overrated by many people. I think people overrating it is what gave it it's legs. It has it's fans, but it also had a lot of people who considered it above average, and not scary. Those folks, like me, were in no hurry to go see the sequel. The Ring was one of the first movies to generate much discussion at BOM, and everybody was going on and on about it, and I'm convinced some joined in just so they weren't left out , even to the point of convincing themselves it actually WAS scary. Even comments from baumer today confirm this, as he stated it was one of the scariest movies he'd ever seen, or words to that effect. That is exactly the kind of overstatement that does a movie in with most people who believe that stuff, and then go to see what the fuss is about, only to have reality hit them that it was the words of exaggeration, and nothing more.
Libs commented that it was almost laughable to hear people screaming their heads off so much. I guess they were acting like a bunch of programmed robots, which falls in line with my theory that a lot of people want to be scared, therefore they convince themselves that they are. It takes a lot more than some poor manipulations to scare a great deal of other people, and this was one of the original's issues...it wasn't scary to anybody who didn't accept that they were SUPPOSED to be scared, and waited for something actually scary that never came along.
The box office came up short, because more people than some of you realize didn't exactly think the first movie was anything special. I don't know a person in real life that considers it great or a classic, and definitely not scary. Ah...the internet.

Mav,
You have some good points. I liked The Ring because of the fact it had a unique concept, was creepy without being gory or really scary and was well made. In fact it had only three or four scary moments.
The Ring 2 is not a failure by any box office standards. But it is a failure due to heightened expectations and wasted opportunities. The Japanese movie industry as a whole makes shitty movies and yes that includes those overrated and horrible anime movies (yuck). Let the Japanese make shitty movies for Japanese audiences and spare us [-o<
Nobody expected this movie to be on par or better than The Ring, but nobody expected total garbage either. The fault with this movie lies with Dreamworks. How many horror movies get the kind of quality actresses like Watts? Usually they have Buffy or some hack like her. They really let the Japanese director serve up a really bad movie wasting the talents of a very good actress.

I actually think nothing went wrong, 15 m opening day for a horror movie is very good. We should compare The Ring 2 to all the horror movies that were released in the last 2 years, and not just to The Ring and The Grudge which were standouts. I was predicting 45.6, but i'm not disappointed at all by that opening day. I'm 100% sure Dremaworks will make a nice profit from this movie.

Why didn't do $45 million. It was because of those stupid Regal theater who only booked it on 1 screen. That's like over 500 of the nations theater's, now that's alot.

I loved The Ring. It scared the shit out of me, and it scared the shit of everyone I saw it with. It scared the shit out of my two sisters, it scared the shit out of most my friends. As a whole, I'd say most people liked The Ring, and most people thought it was scary. I acknowledge that a percentage of the population thought the movie was overrated/not-scary, as I've talked to a few of 'em myself, and others have expressed such thoughts on messageboardland. But I doubt that's how the majority of people felt.
The reason I haven't seen The Ring Two? Bad buzz, bad reviews. I'm a college student, I've got very little non-drug related spending money, and I can't afford to take a chance on a (more likely than not) craptastic movie.
So instead I saw Million Dollar Baby with the ol man. Now that was money well spent.

I had the same experiance. I liked both of them, although neither was scary. The Ring Two is highly entertaining IMO. I think WOM is mixed, some hate it, some love it, many like or think it's ok. Almost nobody thinks it's as good as the original, but that hardly means it has poor wom.

Maverikk wrote: ...a lot of people want to be scared, therefore they convince themselves that they are... The willing suspension of disbelief is a time honored approach to enjoying fictional media. If you set your mind to continuously debunking every scene in a horror movie, you will likely never find yourself scared. If you force a magician to reveal the secret of every trick, you will never experience "magic". I think the following quote from the above link helps to explain: Quote: As budgets have risen and special effects have become more and more realistic, audiences have become less inclined to engage in suspension of disbelief. Modern movie-going audiences often say that recent Hollywood blockbusters are superior to movies made several decades ago because modern computer-generated special effects are more impressive than the less sophisticated effects used in the past, rather than accepting that at the time these movies were made such techniques were not available. A similar attitude often applies to color vs. black-and-white films, particularly among younger fans.
Belief is critical to almost everything in life - if you believe you will never be successful, your chances of failure are extremely high. If you believe you're not going to enjoy a movie, you probably won't...
(None of this makes The Ring 2 a better movie, but you don't have to be a "programmed robot" to allow yourself to get into a receptive state of mind to enjoy your movie experience.)
