THEATRE COUNTS
This is one of the most crowded periods of the year, and Christmas is even worse. Generally, theatre counts are not very high. Remember Shrek 2 and Spidey with their 4,000+ theatres? I highly doubt any December film could get it. Even secure investments like ROTK would have somewhat of a tough time finding empty space to screen.
You can put yourself in the shoes of a theatre owner pretty easly and decide which films to have and which to dump. Lemony, although it didn't open spectacularly, is still a good film to have, and even more so than because it's a family film. Kranks' average isn't anything laudable, but, as a Christmas film, deserves to stay around for a bit longer (though the count is still too high). Post-Christmas, it will take a massive plunge. Polar Express is probably the most secure investment. It has a good average after weeks of playing, and will almost definitely do well this week.
Alexander, on the other hand, should be dumped ASAP.

RANKINGS BY AVERAGE
Take into consideration the theatre counts here. Lemony Snicket's avg. is still really the best one, considering it plays in thousands of theatres compared to less than half a dozen for the top ranked films. OK
Does anyone want me to start a thread concentrating on the chart below????
Huh????
That way we can check how much money (approx.) films are really making.
[quote=box_2005]
ESTIMATED STUDIO PROFITS/LOSSES
Ok, this is highly sketchy. For one, not all films have budget/marketing data, in fact, most don't.
Second, for the chart below, I used a 50/50 share between studios and theatres; it differs with each film and distributor.
What you see below is the estimated profit/loss for a film, after theatre share has been taken out as well as the budget (if available) and marketing (if available). This is NOT 100% accurate, but it's as good as it gets.
You can see what a humongous BOMB Alexander is, and just how much more Polar Express needs to make overseas and on DVD to break even.
1 The Grudge $45,087,936 ( $110,175,871 | $10,000,000 )
2 Saw $26,345,931 ( $55,091,862 | $1,200,000 )

Bravo.
I love the Admissions chart. Maybe you could talk to Eagle and get that, with the rest of this, on the main page. It would make for one hella feature. Very nice.
I love the Hall of Shame. Damn those drops are bad.

Something We've Never Had So Far...
There has never been a weekend where all the top 10 grossers made $10m+. In fact, there has never been a weekend where all of the top 10 made $9m+, $8m+, or $7m+.
One weekend has had 10 $6m+ grossers, and that was this year (see below), Weekend 15.
There are 10 weekends (3-day weekends) where all the top 10 films have made $5m+.
1997: Weekend 52

Another way to put it is which #10 films had the highest grosses of all time. The answer is in the above charts; the 10 #10 films are obviouslt the biggest weekend grosses to have claimed the #10 spot. Weekend 52 of 2001 is the only weekend where the top 12 made $5m+, and as a result, the #12 film, Joe Somebody, can claim the biggest #12 gross of any film.

"In fact, there has never been a weekend where all of the top 10 made $9m+, $8m+, $7m+, or even $6m+. "
You say that and yet you give an example when exactly one of that cases happened
2004 - Weekend 15 - Every single movie in the top 10 got $6+ milion
Good work with the list, Box

ya, I just checked it and edited the post, lol! The reason is because I was looking at pre-2004 weekends when checking $6m+ weekends, blindly assuming 2004 didn't have one.
Oh well, GND's $6m #12 position makes it the biggest #12 grosser ever.
It was still a disappointment, but hey, at least the film achieved something.

You must mean #10 grosser.
The movie unfortunately and surprisingly disappointed, though.

Biggest December Opening Weekends
Whatever the actuals, Fockers should remain at number 4. It came surprisingly close to FOTR.
Fat Albert is an example of a number of films that opened with a 2-day weekend. One rare example of a 2-day opening outside of December is Brother Bear, which as a result held up remarkably well in its second weekend.
