Should hit 50m with that! Wow! Never saw this coming. The franchise seemed to have gone the way of Terminator to me..

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
To put things into perspective how massive this Alien OW is, here are the top OW's of all time for films opening in the second half of Aug.
1 Inglourious Basterds $38,054,676 Aug 21, 2009 2 Superbad $33,052,411 Aug 17, 2007 3 The Expendables 2 $28,591,370 Aug 17, 2012 4 Crazy Rich Asians $26,510,140 Aug 17, 2018 5 Don't Breathe $26,411,706 Aug 26, 2016 6 Halloween $26,362,367 Aug 31, 2007 7 Blue Beetle $25,030,225 Aug 18, 2023
Alien doing $50M+ would be the first time we've seen a $40M+ and a $50M+ OW this time of year.
We've also not seen films do $30M+ this time of year in 15 years!

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
August used to be a great launching pad. In the BO glory days (early 00s) it was well utilised bu the studios.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
DHD estimates:
Alien $18.5M+ /$40M+ D&W $8.5M / $27M-$29M / $545.7M It Ends With Us $7.5M / $23M -54% / $96.7M Twisters $2.5M / $8.4M -44% / $237M Coraline $2.2M / $7.3M 3-day / $10.4M 4-day / $92.8M (overall total)
Pretty stunning for Coraline. Could be at $93M by Sunday.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
That'd be a bit low for Alien after the strong preview, but obviously still a terrific opening that went way above expectations. The franchise is usually strong overseas too so its looking at $300M worldwide on an $80M budget. Thats how you box office.
Coraline number is kinda mind boggling. Is it the Cruel Summer of movies?

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
The $7.1M from the re-release last year showed the level of interest and that was from weekday grosses. There's apparently a Coraline musical in the UK coming out next year so it could help a 2025 re-release.
If a 15 year old re-release can open to $10M+ 4day, seems like a Coraline 2 needs to get greenlit.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Friday #'s
1 Alien $18,000,000 2 Deadpool & Wolverine $8,100,000 -48% $524,916,895 3 It Ends With Us $7,750,000 -68% $81,534,697 4 Twisters $2,750,000 -39% $231,379,315 5 Coraline $2,696,888 (The Numbers is off on the total) 6 Despicable Me 4 $1,570,000 -40% $335,972,155 7 Inside Out 2 $820,000 -47% $639,814,883
Think this is the day that decided the winner of the summer. D&W should have seen some stabilization but had a worse Friday hold (likely some impact of Alien and theater drop). Would need nearly a 5 multiplier from here on out to win the summer / year.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Alien was frontloaded and skewed big markets as well. Deadpool lost most of Imax/PLF this week and that is why it had worse than norm drop for a movie which has had great run so far.

Disney is all like, “I dunno, who IS going to win the summer? If you want one of them to win over the other, guess you gotta go out and see it again…”

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
36% and 39% drops compared to last Sat and Sun for It Ends With Us. Feels like we're looking at $160M+ here. It's having exceptional holds greatly outpacing Fault In Our Stars.
Coraline is the winner of the weekend though. $8.39M weekend, $11.31M 4day for a re-release 15 years later (for a film that opened with $16M)? $94M total cumulative.
Alien $41.5M. Great OW though would have loved $50M, it's the 1st time in history we've seen a $40M+ OW in the 2nd half of August.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Inside Out and Despicable Me will combine to 1 billion+ domestic. Pretty impressive.
DM4 would need a 6x multplier from this weekend to be the biggest film in the franchise. Probably won't happen but it's had a great run.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
DM/Minions being still so strong after 6 films is incredible.
Had IO not been so big - this would have looked even more amazing

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
It ends is not only having an impressive domestic run but also great OS run as well. 33.1m 2nd weekend in OS markets for 82.2m total. Still has several more markets to open. I am thinking it will do 400m+ WW !!!

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Most impressive feat past few days is Romulus China run. Started during presales like 10-15m OW and 20-30m run and finished with 25m+ OW and now Monday is just off 29% from Sunday and up 39% from opening Friday. That kind of run we have not since COVID. Looking like its going for 150m run in China from a low start. Quote: China Box Office: #AlienRomulus make huge $8.05M on MON:
- only -28% from SUN ($11.2M)
- close to SAT ($8.96M)
- higher than FRI ($6.04M)
$34.3M total in 4 days. https://x.com/gavinincinema/status/1825552825553985961

80m budget is great. So beating Prometheus should happen if China goes that high.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
These actuals compared to estimates are really something!
1 Alien $42,003,361 (+$503K) 2 Deadpool & Wolverine $30,003,064 (+$1M) -44.2% $546,819,959 3 It Ends with Us $23,807,130 (-$193K) -52.4% $97,591,827 4 Twisters $10,000,340 (+$200K) -33.3% $238,639,6555 5 Coraline $9,611,555 (+$1.22M) $12,526,116 $94,961,711 (overall total) 6 Despicable Me 4 $6,258,985 (+$259K) -21.6% $340,661,140 7 Inside Out 2 $3,470,125 (+$270K) -28.3% $642,465,008 8 Trap $3,441,333 (+$6K) -48.3% $35,220,818 9 Stree 2 $2,570,000 (+$420K) 10 Borderlands $2,427,379 (+$77K) -71.8% $13,619,616
D&W sneaks past $30M with a $1M spike, Twisters gets past $10M, but most impressive of all, Coraline's weekend goes up $1.22M for a $12.5M 4day and $95M total.
Annual 2024 tally is now $5,389,863,702. Need $3.5B in 4.5 months to beat 2023. 15% behind last year's pace but the fall was bad. I have us at about $6B including Beetlejuice's total gross.
D&W somehow managed a $30M weekend from a $8,166,620 Friday (3.67X). If Inside Out gets to $650M, D&W will need a 4.44X multiplier to get there which is looking a lot better. 2 more weekends before Beetlejuice which could have a bigger impact too.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
I want to see a Deadpool v Wolverine parody where we see the emotions inside Deadpool and Wolverines’ heads like from Inside Out to highlight how dominant Disney has been this summer

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Coraline with a $14M+ tally after 5 days of a re-release. Good timing if they wanted to keep it around. Will play as a family movie when lots of kids are still out of school. Most unexpected $100M movie I expected to see this year! Twisters is just $2.26M away from passing the original unadjusted from 1996! Should get there on Wed.

 Re: Alien: Romulus weekend thread
Interestingly - Alien: Romulus is the highest-grossing horror film of all time in Imax with $40 million.
