Favorite Weezer song?
Favorite song by the alternative power-pop outfit which has careened in and out of critical favor while remaining very popular as both a recording and touring act?

Not a fan of Weezer. "Buddy Holly" is ok, I guess, but just because I know the song, not because I ever listen or want to listen to it. "Hash Pipe" is also ok. I get the feeling that their music is such utterly generic metal that is still being produced to feature in raunchy teen comedies.

Aren't they? I admit, they don't look like it, but they're just light metal, no?

They are alternative rock.

Re: Favorite Weezer song?
And they're rock simply because they use guitars and drums? I mean, many pop songs have those as well. The chorus to "Say It Ain't So" is very metal-esqe.

Re: Favorite Weezer song?
You can argue they are metal if you want, but you will be on a very small island of one. Heavy metal, at its most mainstream and accessible, is typified by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica...and then it winds into more extreme territory or "alternative metal" (Korn, System of a Down, Tool). Weezer are a rock or pop band, and their initial popularity in the 1990s puts them in the same broad alternative class as Blur, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

Alt-metal/rock as a middle ground?

Find your inner music nerd and call them power pop.

That fits well enough. They don't seem out of place among Jimmy Eat World, Kaiser Chiefs, Phil Collins etc.

Buddy Holly came to mind with the recent news of Mary Tyler Moore's passing. I really only know that song, Beverly Hills and Say it aint so.
