The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
Quote: In an apology for using the word “colored” to describe black actors in a recent interview, Benedict Cumberbatch said he makes “no excuse” for “being an idiot.”
“I’m devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done. I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive,” Cumberbatch said in a statement, which the Daily Mail printed in full. “The most shaming aspect of this for me is that I was talking about racial inequality in the performing arts in the UK and the need for rapid improvements in our industry when I used the term.”
PBS’s Tavis Smiley had asked Cumberbatch about British actors playing American roles and mentioned films like Selma and 12 Years a Slave, which star David Oyelowo and Chiwetel Ejiofor, respectively. “I think, as far as colored actors go, it gets really difficult in the U.K., and I think a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here than in the U.K. and that’s something that needs to change,” Cumberbatch said. (The discussion starts at about the 22-minute mark.)
The Imitation Game Oscar nominee faced criticism on Twitter, and the organization Show Racism the Red said in a statement that while Cumberbatch “highlighted a very important issue,” “in doing so, he has also inadvertently highlighted the issue of appropriate terminology and the evolution of language. Show Racism the Red Card feel that the term ‘coloured’ is now outdated and has the potential to cause offence due to the connotations associated with the term and its historical usage.” For every Bill Cosby, who would likely still be thought of as innocent without the Internet Age, there's a Benedict Cumberbatch. He has caught some flack for using the term "colored" in describing black people, an outdated and borderline offensive term for sure, but considering how it was used, I feel any outrage is ludicrous. His intentions are clearly not malicious. I know this is a terribly tense time as far as race relations go, but this has to be a great modern example of making something out of nothing, right?

Re: The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
Okay fine, it's not borderline. Still blown out of proportion.
I do find it humorous that the controversy has come out of what was otherwise a true and important point.

I don't understand how it's offensive. You all know who he's talking about. It's just words, and he communicated his point well. Niggers need to get over themselves. It's not borderline at all. It's nowhere near the damn line.

I thought the Brits used "colored" more of a non white, not exclusive to black people. Also Indians, Asians, etc, where as in America it is certainly a racist against black people.
It's no Michael Richards to say the least.

I find it amusing the arguably most well-known extant civil-rights group in America calls itself the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

We could include white people in the "colored people" family. White is a color too, so why the discrimination? That would not be a bad idea, would it?

In the light spectrum, white represents all the colours. Black represents the absence of colour. But brown is definitely a colour. So is yellow.

Except, Algren, ever compared yourself to a sheet of white paper? You are not white.
Nevermind, you're a Brit, you probably are.

I think we have successfully reduced racial language to a matter of color science. Case is now closed.

Re: The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
People get way too offended anymore, and feel the constant need to find something to make themselves a "victim".
And when said "victim" gets offended, the "culprit" often freaks out and apologizes, more often than not, for no reason. It's dumb.
If co-workers or friends make gay jokes or use hateful words around me that could "offend" me, they always freak out and apologize immediately (or later), asking if I was offended. Uhh.... nope. They're often just words without any real hate or malicious intent behind them. Relax people.
I feel exhausted just thinking about the effort people are putting into said words these days.

Re: The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
lol why is this a thing?
Is that really racist? It's been used before and not in racist terms.
I'd think then, even if he said "black people" people would or should call him out, after all, how dare he refer to the colour of their skin! Which is the main point of this useless outrage isn't it.

Re: The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
I do think "colored" is widely accepted as being an outdated term. It's not so much a term of hate, but just something that has been regarded as, if nothing else, a sign of ignorance. Kind of the same with using the term "queer" for gay people. Assuming the intent isn't malicious, it's not necessarily offensive, just not acceptable today.
I get that. I don't like the further degradation of language because certain groups get offended. And that's not a race thing or a sexual orientation thing. I generally don't like any language resorting to painful euphemisms to disguise and "smarten up" simple language. But I get it. I just get that Benedict wasn't being hateful. Just a little ignorant.

Not all groups regard 60s clothes are appropriate, and not all groups will regard "coloured" as appropriate. It's all bullshit. Just say what you like and then you have nothing to get your panties in a twist about.

"Queer" is still a widely used term, from academia (most major universities have a queer-studies program) to the LGBT community itself.

They also conveniently leave out the question of the interviewer who could have used the term, and Benedict was just politely answering him.
If you're not black, there's really no reason for you try and answer for another race. It's always gonna be a trap with the media.

Re: The Outrage Train slams into Benedict Cumberbatch
I'm getting kind of ranty, but one last point. We live in a time now where it's not about the words, it's all about the subtext. I mean Brits use the word "cunt" like it's a requirement and "fags" are cigarettes. I've had black friends that don't mind racial slurs and have a gay friend that proudly refers to himself as a "faggot." You can't get lost on a word that if you can't get past its history, when if you read the whole quote it's not racist at all.
It's like watching tv spots for a movie that you know is like 10% rotten and you see air quotes like "Out of this world" or "Breathtaking" when the real quote is probably "The amount of stupidity in this movie is breathtaking."
I don't condone saying the word, but what a slow news day
