 Electoral College
Do you support it? I do not. If you can understand this outline for a speech I gave a few days ago....
Abolish Electoral College (Aff) During the approach to this years Presidential election, the GOP decided to hold the Republican National Convention and Formal Nomination in New York. However, New York is a heavily democratic state that has been painted blue by both parties. By holding the convention in New York, the Republican party is gaining nothing because their New York supporters have become entirely superfluous; their voted will not be counted. Even if the convention convinced many New Yorkers to vote Republican, it has no impact whatsoever on the election. 1. The majority does not rule and every vote is not equal in the electoral system. -Ex. several voters deciding to vote rep. in New York’s votes will essentially not be counted, but in several residents of Ohio could make same decision and effect the entire election.
2. The Electoral College Distorts presidential campaigning/not focus on national issues -Issues in Swing states gain more attention than national issues -We are hearing far more this year about the issue of storing hazardous waste at Yucca Mountain, an important one for Nevada's 2.2 million residents, rather than about securing ports against terrorism, a vital concern for 19.2 million New Yorkers, because no one is fighting over them.
3. The Electoral College is likely to produce a tie of 269-269 in the near future. -In the case of a tie, the election goes to the House of Representatives, where each state delegation gets one vote - one for Wyoming's 500,000 residents and one for California's 35.5 million. As Children, we are taught that America is the first and best modern democracy. But because individuals voted count less than other individuals, we are not truly democratic. 1 2 3 It is because I believe that ultimately only a popular vote would be fair under a democratic system that I stand in affirmation of this bill. I voted to keep the EC. My only change would be to get rid of the slate of electors. Instead, the state EC total would go to the canidate who won the state, instead of having the canidates slate of electors cast votes in his favor.

I voted for the electoral college.
I'll explain later. Right now, I have to go to court and defend my clients!

Seems to me like this thread pops up every two weeks.
No, we don't live in a direct democracy. No, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Compare how stable the U.S. system has been over the past 200 years with some other countries that employed some funky voting styles.
