on one end, it's refreshing to see sterling get his comeuppance. been saying for years that he's a gross racist...and a terrible owner

on the other end, people seem too 'refreshed' with the outcome. this is an emotional issue for the players and owners. and, part of silver's decision is troubling. the tapes are obviously illegal... sterling has invested (woefully for decades, but that's besides the point) in the clippers...and even as a franchisee, it's morally iffy for him to be stripped of this effort based on illegal evidence

...and the market would've corrected that investment on its own. rivers resigning, players walking away, lack of sponsors and fans... we're lampooning sterling for pleasure, but missing the lifeline he's just received: the ability to sell his team at roughly the same value as if these comments not been made

he'll earn $1b for the clips. if he weren't punished, that value would've eroded quickly enough to persuade him to sell

which is exactly why silver made this decision... this action best preserves the value of the clips franchise, and, likewise, the nba

The NBA forcing Sterling out is also a market decision, just more of a proactive one. The NBA is not interested in punishing Sterling, they're interested in fans showing up to games.

I have no pity for Sterling, but I'm surprised how accepting everyone is of his girlfriend turning traitor on him.

If I were a charity that catered to minorities (other than the NAACP), I'd expect to be getting some major major donations from Sterling over the next year.

He's 80 and already a billionaire. These guys care more about legacy than they do money at this stage of life, and I really don't think he wants "Crazy Old Racist" written on his tombstone or the headlines when he dies.
