Tsuanmi Appeal: TOO MUCH money? Africa woes...
According to the BBC on a news report i watched around a week or so i go [but forgot to post about it] the Tsunami fund now has way too much money to spend immediately.
There are hundreds of millions of dollars gone un-allocated in the reigon, whilst Governments and publics have shunned African aid pleas in favour of pumping more cash towards the higher profile Tsunami appeal. The aid agencies estimate that some money will not be allocated for years year, but stress that it will help in the long term.
Apparently the U.N is hugely concerned about the record lack of aid helping famine in Africa.

over $7 billion has been pledged to the Tsunami appeal

I know, its lame, and i loathe the way [and im not just saying this based on a sterotype, based on experience with a good 7 or 8 americans] some Westerners/ Americans [in particular] have this attitude that no other country apart from the US matters a shit - what if they were all in poverty stricken hell and it was other people shutting them out of culture so they dont have to be reminded of how greedy they are- how the western world is to blame for raping these countries of a chance to sustain themselves? Call me self-righteous or whatever .
It pisses me off.
The breakdown of that $7b goes like this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-p ... 145259.stm
Japan - $500m governmental aid
Australia - $764m governmental aid [over five years] + $77m public aid
United States - $350m Governmental / $200m+ Public aid
Canada - $340m Governmental / $75m+ Public
United Kingdom- $466m+ Public / $466m+ Governmental [pledge to match public aid]
Germany - $647m Governmental aid [over 3 years] + $586m public aid

How much of the pledged money will actually get to Asia, what do you think?

Most of it will get to Asia. Sadly more than half of it will be lost due to local politicos, aid agencies and inefficiencies.

I disagree. I think a lot of it wont actually be paid. As far as I remember the governments worldwide pledged something around $2 billion to Iran after the earthquake in Bam some years ago and not even half of it was actually paid...

Well there was already some massive problems with this. Also, how the money will be used, etc. I'm pretty sure big events like this always mobilize in a way that long-term problems such as disease, agriculture, and infrastructure problems don't hit the front page. Their long-term after all. I would say that if Africa had suffered from this Tsunami they would have gotten some assistance too. If they would handle it any better than Indonesia, is anyones guess.
I have heard that there is an excess of money for immediate needs, but that's not necessarily a bad thing if governments are smart about it. They could use it to genuinely overhaul and fix up these peripheral, under serviced and poverty stricken places. That's of course hoping they're visionary and not playing their own games, which is unfortunately the case.
Also, there's nothing stopping any of you from donating money any other time of the year and to any continent of your choise. I can't get mad that we've given this much to Tsunami relief, I can just be a little mad we haven't given more to places at other times. This isn't just money, I mean media coverage, discussion, research, and many other issues that could prevent future problems rather than waiting around for something horrible (like massively high virus numbers, natural disasters, or socio-political problems).

I agree completly. What Africa needs is for one of its nations to get one of these things
1. Weapons of Mass Destruction
2. Just Say it has Weapons of Mass Destruction
3. Communism
4. Genocide...oh wait they had that and still no one cared.
