1. Because frequently I have the KJ window open but am doing something else for a long period in another window and don't even check back often. So being visible gives the misleading impression that I'm here, when I'm not really here. I'm the kind of person who has 3-6 browser windows open at once more often than not.
2. I get self conscious seeing my name on the forum user list, I don't even like it when my name is the last name as most recent reply on a thread.

I agree on both counts. I hate the idea of having my name be the last in a sticky somewhere; it's absolutely the worst.

Because it's like someone is singling you out. It's really weird. Almost as if someone is calling your name...
Also, I almost always spend my time doing 4 or 5 things at the same time, so it's not like I'm at KJ's or BOM 24/7.

You go to your Profile and there is an option that says "Hide your online status:"

I choose to be hidden for basically all the reasons that have been covered. For one, I'm not always actually on the computer when the site window is open, I don't think it's important for other members to know I'm online, and I'm used to it from BOM, where I would remain hidden just so flamers or spammers didn't know when I was or was not online, and couldn't calculate the perfect time to ruin the forums if they felt like being assholes.
PEACE, Mike

But you hide because beer bottles would be thrown at you if we knew you were here.
