Here it is if anyone wants to look at it:

Wizard of Oz vs. The Giver
When you think about the greatest movies of all-time, or movie that are just classics ion history, more then likely the movie “The Wizard of Oz” will come up. It is just one of those movies that you will never forget, for the better or the worse. Also, when someone watches “The Wizard of Oz” they usually think that it is one of more different and more unique movies that they have seen, and that no movie could be similar to it. Well, they were wrong.
“The Giver is a story about a boy named Jonas, who until the age of twelve had lived a normal and happy life, and then everything changed. The world Jonas lives in is a world of sameness. Everything in the community from birth to weather is regulated by the Chief Elders who basically oversee what happens in the community. In the community there is no color, no choice of spouse, and basically no choice at all. In this community all people born in a certain year are put into age groups, and every year on a specific day each age group, until the age of twelve, go up and are officially another year older and getting close to being a twelve. At twelve the children have a ceremony in which they find out their job in the community. At the ceremony, Jonas is assigned the job of “Giver”. The Giver is an exclusive job that is picked once the residing Giver is getting old. The community is a world of sameness, but in the past it was not like this, so The Givers duties are too keep all memories of the past. Jonas who has lived in the world of sameness for twelve years now knows how many things are being kept away from people. After about one year of training, Jonas decides to flee the community and try to find one that is not a world of sameness, but a world of choice.
“The Wizard of Oz” is a story about a girl named Dorothy who lives on a farm in Kansas. Then a large tornado picks her up her house and her dog and put them in the strange land on Oz. Things in Oz are strange, but very beautiful, but Dorothy does not care, all she wants is to get back home. She is helped by the Good Fairy of the North, but also is in trouble by the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames young Dorothy for. She follows the Yellow Brick Road in pursuit to find the great Wizard of Oz. On the journey she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin man who needs a heart, and a Lion who needs some courage. The four-some get to meet the great Oz and get their wishes granted.
Now, when you see the summaries of those two books/movies you might think to yourself that those are complete opposites, but actually they have many parallels. In “The Giver”, the community is one of sameness, and no choice or color. The people see everything in black and white, and never see any glimpses of color what so ever. Weeks before the ceremony of twelve, Jonas begins to see color but does not know what it is. When he become The Giver and meets the current Giver, he finds out about color and the sameness of the community. In ‘The Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy also lives in a world of no color, which is Kansas. Everything she sees is also in only black and white. But when the tornado comes and takes her and her dog Toto to the world of Oz she finds out differently. Oz, unlike Kansas, is a world of color, and Dorothy is not accustomed to it.
In “The Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy arrives in the world of Oz and is greeted by the Good Fairy of the North. The Fairy tells her to take the red slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East. With the slippers the other Wicked Witch cannot harm her. She must carry this burden throughout her whole journey to find the great Oz. In “The Giver”, at the ceremony of twelve, Jonas becomes The Giver and with that he must hold all the memories of the past. The Giver transfers these memories to Jonas so that he will have them when the current Giver is dead. Also, Jonas may not talk about his training as Giver or anything that has anything to do with being Giver with anyone except the current Giver. Jonas, like Dorothy, has to have to burden of carrying something, and for Jonas, his burden is too carry all the happy and sad memories of the past with him wherever he goes. These memories sometimes can make Jonas feel good inside, like the memory of Christmas, but also they can make him feel sad like the awful memory of War.
In “The Giver”, the people of the community have no choice in anything. They are not allowed to pick their spouse. Their spouse is designated to them by how well they interact, and similarities the two have. They cannot have children also. At about the age of 12, boys have to take pills so that they will not have dreams or thoughts about sexual encounters with women. Instead there are designated birth laborers who have children. If a couple want children they must apply for a child, and if they are accepted they will be given a child, but each family can only have two children, one boy and one girl. Also, the people of the community have no feelings or heart (metaphorically), no courage, and no brain (metaphorically). In “The Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy meets up with a Tin Man, a Lion, and a Scarecrow. She tells all of them that she is on her way to find the great Oz, so that he will help her with her problem. The Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow all also have problems. Each is missing something that makes everyone unique. The Lion is missing courage. He is scared of anything that comes along his path. He cannot stand up for himself, and is just very scared. The Tin Man is missing a heart. This means that he has no feelings and cannot show love or affection towards anyone, or anything. The Scarecrow is missing a brain. He cannot seem to make good decisions on things and does very unintelligent things. He needs to have a brain so that he will able to make good decisions. Now, these three characters, Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow are all missing something that the people in the community of the Giver are all also missing.
In the world of Oz, the Wizard of Oz is the great almighty one who oversees everything and helps people when they come to him. After all, there is a reason they call it the “Land of Oz”. Now in “The Giver”, there is a council called the Council of Elders, and this council, like the great Oz, oversees the community to see it any problems occur or anything wrong happens. But the one, who most relates to the great Oz, would have to be The Giver. The Giver has to keep all memories locked up inside of him and no one else can know about them. Whenever the Council of Elders encounters a problem in the community and do not know how to solve it, they call on The Giver to use information from the past to give them insight on what to do in this situation and what problems will evolve from this decision. The Giver is by far the most similar to the great Oz, as he helps the community out the most, and saves them in situations that others do not know how to handle.
Another way to two are similar is both main characters wanted to find a new home or new place. In “The Giver”, Jonas is assigned the job of being the Giver, and with this he must receive all memories from the past. After receiving a vast amount of memories and learning about the type of world that he lives in, Jonas sees that in his opinion, the community takes away too many things from someone, and this causes him to flee. In “The Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy, also like Jonas, decides to flee because she does not like her home life and wants to leave. Both characters feel like what they have at home is not what they want, and they wish to get away from it.
Now, in both “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Giver”, there are supporting characters that cannot really depend on themselves, and need people to look out for their needs. In “The Giver”, there is a baby boy named Gabe. Gabe has not met the requirements to be allowed to be given to a family unit. Before he leaves to look for the new community, he remembers that the next day Gabe was going to be released, or killed. Jonas could not allow that to happen. He decides to take Gabe with him to protect him from getting killed. In “The Wizard of Oz”, Toto is taken for destroying the garden that belongs to someone else. She says to kill the dog, but Dorothy refuses to allow that. Eventually Toto, the dog, escapes and Dorothy runs away. She did this to protect Toto from being killed or injured. Both main characters protect someone or something that they love from being injured or killed, and that is true devotion.
Now another similarity for both of them is the introduction they receive when they enter their new world, or community. As Dorothy enters the world of Oz, she is greeted by music, which she loves. In my opinion, this shows the happiness that will come from coming to a new place. On the other hand, while Jonas is on his way to the new community that he is looking for he is also greeted by music. Jonas has walked for days and not found anything. He basically gives up, but then hears music. I believe that this shows the happiness and good that will come for this particular place. Both have music as an introduction to a new place where good things will come from.
In both “The Giver” and “The Wizard of Oz”, both main characters flee their home due to anger or frustration with what is going on in the surrounding environment. But they way they got there is very similar. They did not walk to the new place, but were carried or used something around them to get to the new place they were going to. In “The Giver”, Jonas rides a bicycle while he tries to flee. He does this so he can travel faster and will help him to get to the new community. In “The Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy is carried to the Land of Oz by a tornado. She is looking for her mother in her room, and then a tornado comes and sweeps her up and takes her to this new place In both “The Giver”, and “The Wizard of Oz”, both main characters are taken or use a resource to get to their new world or community.
In “The Giver”, there is a ceremony of twelve, when the children turn twelve and are assigned their jobs that they will keep with them their whole life. When the twelve’s receive their new job or occupation, the community holds a celebration to symbolize this as basically a welcoming to the community. Also when someone is released or killed, they have a celebration to remember all the memories that have happened throughout that person’s life. Now in “The Wizard of Oz”, there is something similar to this. After Dorothy arrives at the great Oz’s residence, she tells him her wishes and the wishes of Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow. Oz grants her three friends their wish, but says he will accompany Dorothy back to Kansas. Before she leaves, there is a big celebration so everyone in the world of Oz can thank her for all the good she has done in her time there. There is also a celebration when she arrives and is thanked for killing the evil witch, and another celebration to wish good luck on her journey to find the great Oz. In both books/movies, there is a celebration for a special occasion to symbolize the end of something, or the beginning of something.
When someone thinks of the word ‘support”, most people would think of someone cheering for them or helping that person get through the thick and thin, and in both books/movies, both main characters have support. When Jonas becomes the Giver, he does not know what is ahead or how hard it is going to be. He then learns about everything that is taken away from them and how so many things are hidden from the people. He tells the Giver that he thinks what is going on is wrong and that both of them should flee the community and look for a new one that is not a world of sameness. The Giver tells him that he cannot go as he must stay as he has most of the memories and he cannot desert the people of the community, and also the fact that he is a very old man, and who would have trouble going through the journey. But, the Giver supports Jonas in his quest to find the new community. This is where the two have a similarity. In “Wizard of Oz”, Dorothy is told to follow the yellow brick road and if she stays on the path she will find the great Oz. On her journey she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion. These three go all the way to meet the great Oz together and each of them support each other through every decision. Dorothy always had her three friends cheering her on and telling her what they were doing was right. When the Lion would get scared, everyone would help him out and give him support to go on. Both show support and help to the ones they care about, because they respect their decisions and know to help is one of the greatest things you can do.
“The Giver”, and “The Wizard of Oz are two books/movies, that once you read or watch them, you will not forget it for a long time. Each of them has their very own uniqueness that makes them something special. “The Giver”, a story about a world of sameness and one persons journey to leave his world for a better world. “The Wizard of Oz”, a story about a girl named Dorothy who gets lost in the World of Oz, and must go on a journey to find the great Oz and ask him for help to return home. Both of these are very unique, but they also have some very in depth similarities in each. A wise man once said that “We are all very different in our own ways, but we are also similar when you get down to it.”
