And American Hustle's snub ranks aloneside There Will Be Blood's BP snub as the most surprising in WOKJ Motion Picture Awards history, IMO. I'd say this is more surprising, considering it got 11 noms and was released wide during the holiday; at least TWBB had the explanation of "not enough people having seen by the deadline" execue (not a strong one I know since it did get all the other noms, but certainly a little more explanable than AH missing). This is a strong year though, especially with Her going wide in time for people to see as well.

Seeing The Grandmaster getting nominated for Cinematography is the biggest positive surprise for me. The category is tough, and to have enough people voting for it toward the top of their ballots is pretty sweet.

I think next year it'd be fun to have the nominations done before the Oscar nominations are released.

Too many major films do not play even close to wide until right before or after Oscar nominations are announced. This year, for example, it would have completely cut the legs out from under Her.

Yeah, I think having the cutoff date be a day before Oscar nominations are announced would be a good idea.

Awesome, awesome, awesome to see Blue Is The Warmest Color get into Best Picture. Really pleased by the nominations for Adele and Brie as well. Love that Short Term 12 also scored a screenplay nomination. A total gem of a film!

I didn't love it, but at least Blue Is The Warmest Color is a unique choice. Good job Lecter, thanks for staying up late to give us the noms.

Re: 10th Annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards - Noms announced!
Here is from my ballot
Funniest Comedy 3 from my ballot made in. Great to see World's End made it in there. Millers to me is more "funnier" than Enough Said, ofcourse the later is a better movie.
Best Horror Film 3 from my ballot made in. Good to see You're Next but Mama was snubbed of a nomination. I wasn't expecting too much love for 'We Are What We Are'.
Best Visual Effects 4 from my ballot made in and I do believe The Lone Ranger (the only one that missed from my ballot) was snubbed. I would have interchanged IM3 with MoS (which I didn't vote for)
Best Original Song Only 2 from my ballot made in. Damn shame that "I See Fire" was runner-up, its very well sung. Good to see Young and Beautiful made in, I totally forgot to nominate it.
Best Supporting Actor 3 got in. I am so pleased to see Gosling in here (whom I nominated). Daniel Bruhl should have been in there.
Best Original Screenplay Got 3 of mine in there. Short Term 12 should have been in there.
Best Documentary Haven't seen any
Best Animated Feature 4 from my ballot got in. I am happy that Wind Rises got in even though I haven't seen it yet so I couldn't nominate. Ugh for Cloudy sneaking in.
Best Foreign-Language Film Only 2 from my ballot got in. So glad that Blue is in there and happy for Wind Rises nomination as well. The Great Beauty should have been there as well IMO.
Best Original Score Only 2 from my ballot got in. The Lone Ranger got snubbed here.
Best Cinematography 3 from my ballot got in. The Grandmaster should have been in here.
Best Costume Design 2 from my ballot got in. No idea what Her is doing in Costume section....did people like the shirts that Pheonix was wearing???
Best Art Direction Only Gravity made in from my ballot. I just don't understand how any of The Lone Ranger, Man of Steel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or Hobbit had lesser art/production design than 12YAS, AH and Her. I am fine with Gatsby in here.
Best Makeup 3 of mine got in here. Jackass should have been in here and should have won.
Breakthrough 2013 Adele and Brie getting in here is great. I totally forgot Margot while voting so I am glad to see her here.
Best Actor 3 of mine got in. No love for Miles Teller or Ethan Hawke. Bale and Ejiofor both came behind Phoenix for me.
Best Sound Again 3 of mine got in. No love for Lone Ranger or Lone Surivor (the shooting scenes were great here).
Best Supporting Actress 3 got in. I additionally nominated Léa Seydoux and Kristin Scott Thomas for 'Only God Forgives' but I am happy that Margot Robbie is in there.
Best Editing From my ballot only Gravity made it in. Captain Phillips should have made it in here.
Best Adapted Screenplay 3 from my ballot got in though I somehow thought Short Term 12 was original screenplay. Again I felt Captain Phillips should have been in there.
Best Actress Except for Julie Delpy from my list everyone made in. I didn't really love Amy Adams as much in AH.
Best Ensemble 3 from my ballots got in. August and This is the End should have been here for ensemble.
Best Director I didn't have Russell and McQueen because I felt Paul Greengrass and J.C. Chandor did better job.
Best Picture I am SO VERY HAPPY that Blue made it in. From my ballot only other movie that made in was Gravity.

publicenemy#1 wrote: I think next year it'd be fun to have the nominations done before the Oscar nominations are released. I'm with David. I don't think that's gonna work. Not only will it hurt all the films expanding around the time of the noms, but it will comletely fuck over foreign voters. At least giving them 1-2 more weeks gives a much bigger shot at seeing stuff. Honestly, I don't understand why we sould do that anyway. Is it because our noms are supposedly similar to the Oscars andpeople have been influenced by them? I say no way. Not a single nom for Nebraska or Philomena here, American Hustle missed for BP, Blue is the warmest Color, Rush and Short Term 12 did quite well. I mean what advantage would arise from voting earlier? James Franco probably stll wouldn't have been niomnated (because Spring Breakers sucks ass ) and Joaquin Phoenix would have had an even smaller chance due to no one having seen the film in time. I mean, sure, Oscar favorites like 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle and Wolf did really well, but that is because people generally like those films. It's not like they have been disliked prior to the Oscar noms and people start loving them afterwards. I, for one, do think that our noms stand quite in contrast to the Oscars.

Oh and there is just one SINGLE category (Art Direction) that matches the Oscars completely.

Big thanks to Lecter for doing a great job.
Also, as he posted the nominees, I imagined them in Chris Hemsworth's voice. The nomination announcements were fun and dreamy.

I imagined all the nominations being announced in Hitler's voice and after every category was fully announced the participants all shout SIEG HEIL.

Re: 10th Annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards - Noms announced!
A few stats...
American Hustle breaks the record for most nominated film without a Best Picture nomination with 11 nods. The previous record holder was There Will Be Blood which held the record for 6 years and had 9 nominations.
Scorsese now has the most Best Director nominations with 5. He pulls ahead of both Christopher Nolan and David Fincher who are both on 4. Previous to The Wolf of Wall Street he was up for The Aviator 2004, The Departed 06 (for which he won for), Shutter Island 2010 and Hugo 2011.
There are 3 Directors who have moved up to their 2nd nomination which are David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook 2012), Steve McQueen (Shame 2011) and Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men 2006).
Spike Jonze is the only first time nominee in the Director category.
Tom Hanks and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the newcomers in Best Actor.
Matthew McConaughey scores his 2nd after being nominated last year for Best Actor in Killer Joe. Christian Bale also grabs his 2nd, he was a previous winner in the Supporting Actor category for The Fighter (2010).
Leonardo DiCaprio lands his 5th nomination overall for The Wolf of Wall Street. Previous turns in The Aviator (Best Actor 2004), The Departed (Won Best Actor 2006), Revolutionary Road (Best Actor 2008) and Django Unchained (Won Supporting Actor 2012) have landed him nominations and wins in the acting categories.
Just one nomination ahead of DiCaprio and current record holder and record setter is Ryan Gosling who moves up to his 6th nomination for his supporting performance in The Place Beyond the Pines. Also of note is he has the most nominations of any Actor, male or female, that hasn’t won. His previous work that has been nominated were for Drive (Best Actor 2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love (Best Supporting Actor 2011), Blue Valentine (Best Actor 2010), Lars and the Real Girl (Best Actor 2007) and Half Nelson (Best Actor 2006).
Jared Leto and James Gandolfini are the newcomers in Supporting Actor.
Both Bradley Cooper and Michael Fassbender notch up their 2nd nods. Coopers previously been nominated for Silver Linings Playbook for Best Actor (2012) and Fassbender is a previous winner for Best Actor for Shame (2011).
Brie Larson, Adele Exarchopoulos and Sandra Bullock receive their first nominations for their respective roles.
Cate Blanchett has now been nominated 3 times. This is her first showing in Best Actress. Her previous nominations are both for Supporting Actress in both Notes on a Scandal (2006) and The Aviator (2004)
Amy Adams garners her 4th nomination which now ties her with Kate Winslet for the most nominations for an actress. Adams won Supporting Actress for Junebug (2005). Her previous nominations are for Enchanted (Best Actress 2007) and Supporting Actress for The Fighter (2010).
Picking up her 3rd for American Hustle is Jennifer Lawrence. She has also been nominated for Best Actress in 2010 for Winters Bone and won last year for Best Actress in Silver Linings Playbook.
This will be Scarlett Johanssons first nomination since 2005 and her 2nd nomination overall. Her last nod was for Match Point in the Supporting Actress line up. It also gives her the record for both an actress or an actor for the longest time between nominations (8 years).
Nyong’o, Robbie and Roberts are all first time nominees.
