Some people outside of majors cities may not get smaller films to well after January. Oscar votes get screener DVD's and such. Its fine to want to avoid OScar influence, but you're also damning smaller films like Brokeback Mountain, which people may not get to see.
Honestly I think the awards should be held well after the oscars to give people a chance to really see everything. unlike the Oscar voters we are capable fo remember thie whole year.
If you have it January I certainly won't vote, I won't have seen enough films to bother. Plus with family and the holidays it can be tough to get to the movies, I think the effect of the Academy is neglible, we often nominate films/actors/etc. they don't. I politely disagree. Checking the schedule, I see that Memoirs is going wide on December 23rd, Munich on January 6th (1800 theaters), The Libertine and The New World and The Producers on 13th, Match Point on 20th. And I'm positively sure Brokeback Mountain will be wide enough before the end of January. There is no reason for it to stay 7 weeks in limited release if it gets enough buzz from Golden Globe and other awards. So at least domestically in the U.S., there are no major films that you can't catch before Feburary. Even Match Point has two weekends for people to go if the date is set to January 30th. And my experience tells me that for most people, if they are not interested in catching it the first couple of weekends when a film goes wide, they are more likely to wait a long while before catching it. I'd rather take that small amount of penalty (a few people won't be able to check out all the films they like) than having Jamie Foxx nominated again for supporting actor for Collateral.
I still think its unreasonable though, let's say Brobeback opens in 1500 theaters, that doesn't guarantee everyone can see. I've seen Good Night and Good Luck whereas my boyfriend has nto because it has yet to open where he lives. My point here is, wide for smaller films like Match POint is not 3000 theaters, it might only be 1000-1500, and it may open wide slowly. Munich will go wide quickly, but Brokeback maybe not so much.
By having the vote by the end of January, if Brokeback comes to be January 27th I have to see it that weekend to vote.
I just think its unreasonable, basically in order to vote I have to go see 2 films every weekend between now and the end of voting and I still won't likely get to everything. I didn't see Sideways or Million Dollar Baby till February of last year.
As I said, have it when you want, but I think its asking alot. I mean around Christmas some people (like me) are traveling or have family committments so films opening then might get pushed back to January. For me I see most of my oscar films in Januarya nd February, as smaller films have less hsowings or open later, etc.
January deadline for Academy voters isn;t a good benchmark for when we can view movies becuase they are given special access to the films.
Why are people so worried about the Oscar effect, are the posters here such sheep that what the Academy says is gold? This is the same body which awards Ordinary people over Raging Bull. My number picture of the year for the last 5 years at least has differed from them. Hell my 5 nominees for best picture in 2004 would have matched with there in like one maybe two cases, last year was better but still.

Pretty much. I'm not certain if the Oscars did have an effect last year, but plenty of people cried over it and said it wasn't fair to the more deserving films, so... either we move the nomination deadline, or the Academy does. And I think we're going to be moving the deadline before they do.

I like you guys and all, but I am spending January with my boyfriend on the other side of the country, I am not craming in a bunch if films jsut to vote if other things come my way. Yes, if I say 2-3 movies a well while on break (I have zero time to see films before the semester ends), I might see them all.
Honestly though I don't see why we have ot stick to the oscar deadline. I personally would perfer to have the voting later, in like March, earliest February. Not everyoen goes to the movies every weekend. I usually go once or twice a month. I have been slowly seeing the smaller fare as it opens near me (Violence, Good Night, Pride and Prejudice) but I still want to see Syriana, Capote, Munich, Brokeback, Geisha, Kong, Match Point, Walk the Line (if it hangs aorund in theaters long enough), Rumour Has IT, The Family Stone, and some other films all ina nd around the January time plus stuff on video.
If people vote just because of what the Academy says, well that's their stupidity. The Academy might not recognize Violence or Good Night or The COnstnat Gardner, but they would certainly appear in places on my ballot.

I liked the timing of lasts years. I had enough time to catch up, and besides, I Jan 30th isn't enough time for me to begin campaigning for Walk on Water and Downfall. I need at least 4 months to ensure another martial arts film doesn't win this time around.

Maybe we should have a best overlooked film from the previous year category. *cough*beforesunset*cough*

Maybe we should have our own Independent Spirit Award in March.

Just so there's no confusion, I was serious when I said Alfie was the most overlooked movie. It was fantastic.

Christian, I somehow missed your Alfie confession.
Never feel shame about liking Alfie. It really was genuinely good.

Yeah, but that's coming from an Alfie fan. Do you really think that's a reliable source?
Go back to feeling shame please
