You should really look into the wealth of guys like Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Rothschild, et al when adjusted for inflation. You realize people getting off at Ellis Island literally with nothing but the clothes on the back didn't walk into a mountain of services, right? How did they make it work? People like Rockefellar were worth a small % of the United States GDP while newcomers literally lived on top of each other and physically fought over work.

Work, the will to work, the desire to work. That is heart of what this is all about & Democrats are KILLING this within the USA and it is terrible for the country.

Good lord, the ignorance of some Democrats is just ridiculous. Sure, income inequality is a problem, but hand outs are not the solution. Never have been and never will be.

Its almost comical to still see people defending/siding with Obama. The Republicans obviously might be right but good lord is it clear Obama is wrong.

Romney's 47% speech is generally so true it is saddening. If you were to present the basic case to people in generic terms, everybody - literally 100% - includes O has been an epic failure. But when you tell them it's Obama, few want to admit they were wrong.

Electing Obama President was not wise and he was not experienced for this job.

All modern Presidents had executive experience or came from strong political families.
I know people will say Kennedy but Kennedy had a whack of Experience compared to Obama when he ran for Office and his family knew Washington well.

So reality is Obama came to Washington with few real friends in Washington.

Furthermore, Leadership is not simply speaking well...

It is your ability to project power, control and influence others.

I think we all agree Obama speaks well but on the other aspects of leadership, he has proven quite abysmal.

It is true the GOP has stalled him, but listen to the inside politics in Washington, he can't even get his party on Congress on his side at times.

Looking at the district by district, county by county breakdown in a lot of these races has to be concerning for Democrats. They truly had a terrible showing yesterday.

They were due. Though I remember hearing this morning that when this has happened before, the party that was formerly in control has never gone on to win two years later in the presidential election. They probably aren't loving that, but they'd be even more worried now except the Repubs don't have a clear cut candidate to go against Hillary. And the only one who seems certain to run and do well - Chris Christie - I'm not sure would win against Clinton even if the vote were held yesterday.

They need Mitt Romney to run. Rand Paul is enough of an outsider and does the type outreach required but when people find out what he stands for, they would never support him.

They need the REAL Mitt Romney to run. The guy who doesnt give a fuck about gay marriage and thinks universal health care is a good idea.

Nobody has any real respect for because he has no political accomplishments beyond winning elections.

Yep. The only problem is the GOP would never nominate that guy. Like Charlie Baker, he'd be considered a democrat or, at best, a moderate, to the rest of the country.

The GOP has been corrupted (and I don't see it ending anytime soon) by the whacked out of their minds religious far right and the Tea Party.

It was an interesting election day here (not one I especially enjoyed).

We elected our first ever female Senator, and first Republican Senator since 1956, Shelly Moore Capito. She also won every county, including her opponent's (the Secretary of State) home county. While this is a historic event, she's hardly impressive. I attended a town hall meeting where she was the speaker 6 years ago, and her favorite response of that night was "I'll discuss this with my advisers and get back to you on that".

Nick Rahall lost his seat of nearly 40 years, thus flipping the district and resulting in Republicans fully representing the state in the House of Representatives.

And we elected the youngest lawmaker in the country, Saira Blair (18), to the House of Delegates, having won the nomination prior while still a minor.

West Virginia used to be a very blue state, oddly enough, but it's changed almost overnight. Slowly after 2000, but alarmingly fast since 2008. The majority of the State Legislature are still Democrats, but that's likely to change over the course of the next few elections.

I think Hillary Clinton might be able to carry the state again for the Democrats, though. She easily beat Obama here in 2008, and polls had her well ahead if she was up against McCain.

What? What?! First of all, your first paragraph makes no fucking sense. If a 16 year old hs kid and a 35 year old mother of 3 have the same job, of course you pay them the same.

Peyton Manning and Eli Manning have the same job. Should they be paid the same? If not, why not?

Chip I believe is talking about dime a dozen jobs: anyone could be, say, a waiter. These kind of jobs don't require a specific talent. Sure tips divide the best from the worst, but waiters working at the same restaurant get the same base salary.

Peyton and Eli Manning shouldn't be paid the same because of their levels of talent within their job requirement. Both can throw a ball, but one has better stats. That difference in talent is why they shouldn't be paid the same.

The minimum wage is not intended for 35 year old single Moms and should not be designed around them. If youre 35 and making minimum wage, you really screwed up and sadly have to pay for it.

Real sincere. :funny: (I'm not trying to be a dick :))

Does the minimum wage really assume that all thirty-five year olds have the same capabilities as other thirty-five year olds and sixteen year olds have the same capabilities as other sixteen year olds. Or that thirty-five year old single mom wanted to be just that and set out on it as a life goal.

Should a thirty-five year old mentally handicapped person be compared to other thirty-five year olds?

Should a thirty-five year old who grew up in poverty be compared to a thirty-five year old who didn't?

Who gets to decide how the advantages broke for someone? How did they screw up what they couldn't control?

If we were all born pods and raised in domed communities with the same advantages (Utopia) that would've been great. The lazy thirty-five year old shouldn't be held to the same standard as the hard working others. But we weren't. And intentions or not, the minimum wage shouldn't be used to assume anything except it being the minimum someone needs to live.

Then what do you pay high schoolers?

The minimum wage is the minimum someone can be paid, not the minimum needed to live.

I know. It needs to be higher.

People forget that the unemployment rate seems to be showing great news on the economic front.

It is misleading due to the severity of this recession, therefore there is a glut of unskilled cheap labour.

Therefore, general market forces will dictate that companies will pay people the min wage as well people are willing to work for it.

If that is the case, govt does have a role to increase it something more tolerable.

"Unemployment rate" ignores several critical variables.

The actual employment - how many people are working - and pay levels are much more important.

Right now, far too few are working and those that are are making much less than they should.
