When I was in highschool, kids were fucking stupid and proud of it.
The kids at my school are fucking stupid and always will be. The parents don't seem to understand that writing checks 24/7, from SAT tutoring to Final Exam Prep, doesn't make their kids any smarter. It just gets them an A or a B on test and not much else...
The kids are getting into ivies only because a) parents in this district tend to have more money than they know what to do with, b) cheating, grade policy changes, and the final exam system that allows a kid to get an 89.6 one quarter, another 89.6, and a 70 on an exam and still get an A (basically. borderline grades), and c) connections (legacies and what not). Only a handle of the kids are really smart, and most often, it isn't evident by grades...

Yes college is expensive, but why pay $35k for a random no name private school?
I rejected goign to boarding school because I hated kids like that. I'm a public school whore and I love it, cheap and I don't have to feel like the token black person in the dorm.

I don't plan to. I'd only go there if my options were Montgomery Kommunity Kollege (NO), Bob Jones University (NO), or Providence.
zach, you should consider Brown for the summer. We'll have our own little party. Maybe a Birdcage viewing. And you'll get to meet Ripper all you want (well, unless she a) doesn't want to be with you or b) doesn't have time )...They prob. have something to do with architecture...

RISD is in spitting distance of Brown, and they have an arichtecture program, I am not sure aht Brown has...but at Brown you can design your own major...at what happens when yuppiess design a cirriculum.
If you are going to bein RI this summer, then we must go to the beach, and if you arewilling to smack down $40-50 for a meal once I'll take you to my favorite restaurant.
Of course if you've never been to Boston, day trips there a requirement.

How far is Providence from Boston? And, can you only get there by car?

Florida? Awesome.
Have you applied places? Or, are you a junior?
You guys know, it'll be interesting looking back at this thread in ten years (if the site's still around) and seeing how much college really mattered after all...

Its takes about an hour and half to drive their by car, and no, you take the trian, parking and driving in Boston is HELL!
RI is the Ocean State, dear Torrino...we have a heack of alot of coastline. If you are in RI in the summer you have to visit Newport, Block Island, the beacher in Narragansett..summer is really the best time to be in RI.
Most of those pesky Brown students are gone

I case you're considering the University of Chicago: it has probably the toughest and most difficult program academically. The GPA upon graduation is 3.48-3.58, much lower than the other big unis. One out of 7 students do not graduate, compared to one out of 50 for Harvard (but then again, the overwhelming majority of Harvard undergrads graduate with some kind of honors; you must be either exceedingly stupid or exceedingly poor not to graduate from there).
But..., UofC is associated with 78 Nobel Prize winners (either alumni or teaching staff) and much, much else. There are also a greater number of UofC undergrads who complete grad school.

It's a great university
If I had considered going out of the country, it'd have been my top choice.
Incidentally, I think our system here in Canada is different from you Americans'. As I recall, I nor anyone else received any such letters. There's an annual university fair downtown, where you can visit with reps from various universities and colleges, and you can obviously have contact info via the counsellors at your school, but no sending of letters or somesuch.
Usually, we pick three universities, and for each additional one you pay a certain amount. Shockingly enough, I've heard of people with 25 choices. What the hell? You must either be overly neurotic or completely stupid if you require such a long list. I mean, come on...
And I find it interesting what you mentioned about tutors, torrino. If the kid needs tutoring at that stage, as bad as this sounds, they will be depending on them for life support throughout college, assuming the students will stick around for the entirety of the program. Heh, but who cares for as long as you have money, right?

Well...
I had an SAT tutor, but I paid for it myself (and it's DAMN expensive). It's helping me secure around 2000. Before, I was somewhat shaky and I could fall anywhere between 1700 - 2100. It's just more techniques, more practice, and personalized answers. I found it helpful, and I'm hoping it pays off. I only had six sessions However, there's some kids in this neighborhood who drive Mercedes SUVs and have around 20 sessions...all of which is paid for BY their parents. I wonder who pays for their car insurance and gas, too?
I don't think I'll need tutors for every single bit of my life, though. There's nothing wrong with asking someone to explain something to you. In essence, that's what a book does. Except, it doesn't attend to your own specific needs.
I've never had a tutor in a specific subject, though. I can find the help I need (such as Krem. That Physics genius. Waste of talent. He could be the next Feynman...) or I gain it myself

I'll likely be doing UF or UM.
Maybe we'll meet up someday!
I don't want to go out of state because the Bright Futures Program rocks. Full ride here we come. \:D/

I am so freaking out over the new SAT. My PSAT scores were sad. Heh. Really sad. Like 1400. Maybe I didn't take it seriously. I dunno. It'll be alright, I am sure I can get em up with some studying. Sheesh.

I don't mean tutoring as an occasional resource. I was referring to tutoring where the students actually make it a permanent feature of their studying.
I can understand that, since high school covers a broader range of fields, tutoring might be required for areas that are not necessarily that student's strength (English student and math, for example). But requiring math tutoring when you want to go into accounting or statistics, or biology and chemistry tutoring when you want to go into the field of medicine is a much harder buy for me.
And physics, eh? By the time I took final year Physics, I had decided I wouldn't head towards Med School (the pre-Lit choice), so I decided to do a minimum amount of work in that class. My teacher, whom I had before in computer Science (in which I did much better) told me at the beginning of the course that he expected an A+. To cut a boring story short, I completely sucked and ended up with the worst mark I ever got in high school, barely an A-.

Don't make me stab you. I. Hate. Science.
I'm barely managing an A in Pre-AP Chem.
And next comes two years of Physics. Joy.
