Ransom
RansomQuote: Ransom is a 1996 American thriller starring Mel Gibson, Rene Russo, Delroy Lindo, Gary Sinise, Liev Schreiber, Donnie Wahlberg, Lili Taylor, Evan Handler and Brawley Nolte and directed by Ron Howard. Gibson was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Ransom was the 5th highest grossing film of 1996 in the United States.
The original idea for the story was from an episode of The United States Steel Hour named "Fearful Decision" that aired in 1954. It was then adapted into a feature-length film of the same name in 1956, written by Richard Maibaum and Cyril Hume starring Glenn Ford, Donna Reed and Leslie Nielsen. The film also was influenced by King's Ransom, a police procedural novel by Ed McBain which was, in turn, the basis for Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film High and Low. A little dissapointing, considering that I'm a big fan of Mel Gibson and kidnapping-type films. Not bad, but nothing special. C+

Great great great movie!! Gibson gives a perfect performance here. The direction is very good, the movie isn't boring for a second and emotionally very involving. A+

Ransom - A-
A brilliant script. Mel Gibson acts superbly. Im loving the whole 'Stockholm Syndrome' thing, if only they played on it abit more.

A bit unrealistic at times and predictable, but still a very superb thriller with a great performance by Mel Gibson and a good turn by Gary Sinise. Despite having a running time of over two hours, at no point does the movie get boring or uninspired. I just wish they played more on the angle with the kidnappers being hunted for the money.

Re: Ransom
Very underrated movie. It's incredible intense and Gibson deserved a Oscar or at least a nomination. Give the movie a poll, please.

Re: Ransom
Not bad. A little unrealistic at times, but still very enjoyable. Gary Sinese, Rene Russo, and especially Mel Gibson are great here.

Re: Ransom
I loved this movie, and the leads were awesome. Sinise kicked ass as did Gibson. Very solid cast throughout.

I still don't understand why Gibson hasn't gotten more praise for his role.

Re: Ransom
waiting for another movie on tv, i saw the second hour of this film yesterday and thought it was shockingly bad, even by low ron howard standards (his best movie is still "splash"). mel gibsons acting is laughable at times, especially his reaction to the alleged shooting of his son is comedy gold.

Re: Ransom
Yep this another 90's classic. Gibson's performance is truly touching and heartfelt and the supporting cast is great too.
The year 1996 was such a great year for movies. I just wish I was older when this first came out, because I definitely would have seen it in theatres.

Re: Ransom
agreed, that scene in particular is pretty hard to watch, I always think he is going to jump off the ledge during it. Russo really kills it too. I almost wish they went all out and went through with actually killing him.

Re: Ransom
It's superbly acted throughout, and not at any moment was it "comedy". It hits all of the right notes.

Re: Ransom
Watched this for there first time in about 20 years recently. Such a well done film and Gibson is at his absolute peak here. Cinema misses him, too bad he went nuts. Russo, Sinise, Lindo, and whoever plays the kid are good too.
Agreed with the comment: re hunting the killers for money. That would have been interesting to see, i.e. people spying on people, etc.
