Quote:
Rocky II is a 1979 American film that is the sequel to Rocky, a motion picture in which an unknown boxer had been given a chance to kick ass and go the distance with the World Heavyweight Champion. Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers, Tony Burton, Burgess Meredith, Burt Young and Talia Shire reprised their original roles. Although this film was released in 1979, the ring announcers say that it takes place ten months after Rocky's first fight with Apollo Creed, putting the Rocky II fight with Apollo in November 1976. The Ring Magazine heavyweight championship belt makes its first appearance in the series.

Just as good as the original. It's downhill after this, though.

B+

It's a tiny bit weaker in terms of character development and story, but it's a great sequel nonetheless.

The best of the series IMO. It has the drama of the first film, but also brings in Stallone's style of directing, which for what it is, makes the film look very good. Its a little more lighthearted and less gritty than the original, but the subplots are very good. Although many people say he shouldnt fight with the brain damage, they also take out the damage to his eye after this film, which is also kind of funny.

It has the best fight, and ultimately one of the greatest, if unrealistic, last moments of a fight.

It's not as good as the first film, but it's certainly well made. I really liked how it picked up immediately where the first film left off, it really felt like a true continuation. The goofy coma bit and end of the excellent, excellent fight aside, it's got a very solid script. B+

I guess I'm one of the only 2 that will give this movie an "A" simply because to me, it feels more like a continuation of the 1st movie which also received an "A" from me.. Watching these 2 movie's reminds one that you don't need a ROCKY 6 like Stallone is doing..

Almost as good as the first. The final fight is tremendous, and when Adrian whispers to Rocky that she just wants him to do one thing for her..."Win", my heart races. It gives me chills.

9.5/10

Rocky II

An improvement over the first in production value and the fight/training sequences. It's a stellar cast and a great story/setting, and this movie is really entertaining in that you can really see Creed playing it up as Ali. This is the best Rocky film besides the fourth (which is the best movie ever made) and I enjoy every single scene, every glance, every line of dialogue, and every shot. It's just like watching my friends on screen. I've seen these characters for my whole life and every time I watch this movie (and all other Rocky's) I notice different things and see things from a different perspective. So many things are relatable...probably why they are such popular works of art.

A+

Post Re: Rocky II
I've been meaning to give this a rewatch for like the past year and finally did this weekend. It's as great of a sequel as any, and except for how both films end with a fight against the same opponent, the story adds so many more layers to the characters. It's just a very well written script, and remarkably so well directed too by Stallone in his second directorial effort.
In the first half hour the film needs to find itself a bit, much like Rocky himself after his iconic fight, in recovering physically, furthering his career and relationship with Adrian. But once Mickey enters the picture again, and Rocky starts by first cleaning up in the gym, then Apollo challenging him again and Rocky starting to train it becomes very engaging. The care Rocky has for Adrian once she ends up in the hospital builds his character and the moment Adrian tell him to win is some of the best in cinema. The training montage and the run through Philly with the kids just iconic and it's topped off by the excellent second Apollo fight. It also works great for the narrative that Rocky develops the ability to fight right handed in the rematch. Just an excellent sequel I was so glad to experience again.
