Compared to its performance yesterday from 2 days ago, it did have a somewhat noticeable jump. Going up almost 3.5% with total admissions the day before release should see it have a satisfactory walk-in rate.

While it begins -26.7% below Ant-Man 3's OD number, it does have a $15-30 extra charge in regular theaters. In IMAX, prices are around $175-$180 on average for an adult ticket. In an attempt to bolster ticket sales, Golden Harvest is promoting cheap Wednesdays with all regular and IMAX showings of every film including Guardians of the Galaxy 3 discounted. Prices of regular showings for GOTG 3 vary depending on the theater with Wednesday showings reduced by $35-$65. The sole IMAX at GH has also slashed its prices by $50 for the entire day. Admissions at GH are heavily skewed towards Wednesday as Thursday sales have been quite slow at most locations. We may see a drop of 50-60% tomorrow in pre-sales due to this development.

It looks like Saturday was not inflated and they used the $30 average ticket price around the city for the day's gross. A lot of holdovers saw beneficial results with very good week-to-week holds. Super Mario will get close to 6m this weekend or might even pass it on Sunday while Marry My Dead Body and Mad Fate will pass 1m sometime this weekend. Wednesday Estimates1. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - $313,944 ( opening day estimate) 2. Marry My Dead Body - $56,448/$765,000 3. Mad Fate - $23,902/$905,000 4. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $16,135/$5,776,000 5. Over My Dead Body - $9,441/$2,618,000 That is a decent opening day for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It is looking at an opening weekend around 1.8m which would be on par with Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It has good word of mouth to start with a 4.1/5 rating and an 8.9/10 rating from users.
| Thursday adm. | (so far) | | | May 4 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |

10 | To Catch A Killer | 336 | 142 | -57.7% | -30.7% |
Not quite a 50% drop in pre-sales on Thursday but still a significant decline for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. With Cinema Day finished and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opening, all holdovers saw at least a 50% drop week-to-week.

Good increase for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It has been cutting down on Ant-Man 3's pre-sales lead from 5,000+ on Wednesday to just 3,100 today. This day-to-day increase bodes well for a sizable weekend jump.

Strong increase for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Ant-Man 3's lead in pre-sales over GOTG 3 continues to shrink. No Cinema Day meant extreme drops for all holdovers. The only holdover to escape an 85% decline from last Saturday was Marry My Dead Body.

That would be the biggest OW of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and also its first 2m OW in the series. It also would come out ahead of Ant-Man 3's OW. After tracking in the 1-1.5m OW range for quite a while, GOTG 3 really came back starting with one day to go and beyond. From what I could tell, GOTG 3 eclipsed 55,000 admissions on both Saturday and Sunday.

No adjustment for Guardians with estimates. Marry My Dead Body had a great hold despite Cinema Day inflating last weekend's grosses. Conversely, Mario took a large tumble after it benefited greatly from the increase in showtimes on Cinema Day. Both Marry My Dead Body and Mad Fate passed 1m this weekend while it will take a little bit longer for Mario to reach 6m. It will definitely happen by next weekend. Over My Dead Body also saw a steep drop after Cinema Day weekend.

Thanks. But I've forgotten how many cinemas are in Hong Kong, lol. Is 20 cinemas a lot? I want to say that Hong Kong has about 50 cinemas in total. Is that way off?

Re: HK 5/11 THU: GOTG 3 holds at #1 on a quiet week
Ok, thanks.
So a count of 20 is a limited release. Born to Fly's numbers still feel quite pathetic - and even the fact it was given such a small release is funny. Either nervy officials worried that it would be embarrassed, or the fact that Hong Kongers just don't care about the Top Gun knock-off. Either way it's a fail for CCP propaganda.

Re: HK 7/11 THU: Inside Out 2 cruises to 5m opening day
Some of you may be wondering why Inside Out 2 increased from last Thursday overseas. This is the reason why.
In Hong Kong, Inside Out 2 officially opened on Thursday but it had sneak previews beginning on June 29, going up against Despicable Me 4's official opening day. It has had 12 days of sneak previews, beaten Despicable Me 4 every single day and has widened the gap over it as well.
Some numbers: During the 3 day holiday period from June 29-July 1, Inside Out 2 grossed around 1.85-1.9m. With today's official opening day total coming in over 5m, this will amass 6.5m for its official opening weekend (including previews).
There's no doubt in my mind that this will pass 10m and it should beat Toy Story 3 ($89,364,118 HK, 11.3m US) for the highest grossing animation film of all time. I see about 95m HK ($12.0m US) for Inside Out 2 on the low end and up to around 120m HK ($15.2m US) on the high end depending on its performance against Twisters next weekend and how theaters schedule Deadpool & Wolverine. If Deadpool & Wolverine gets 5-6 screens everywhere, then it is game over for Inside Out 2 and I expect around 12m, however, if it can sustain itself against Twisters and do well, I think theaters will have to give 5-6 showtimes to Inside Out 2 at theaters with 5-6 screens in 2 weeks. ____________________________ Despicable Me 4's performance has been disappointing. It has only made about 2.7m so far. Considering the franchise came out on top in the past against Inside Out and Pixar, to not even make half of Minions' total (78.4m HK) would be shocking. It can only hope that Deadpool & Wolverine underperforms in 2 weeks because at the pace it is going, 5m is not happening.

Re: HK 7/11 WKD: Inside Out 2 smashes 6.5m OW; Deadpool & W
Quote: The weekend saw Inside Out 2 open at #1 in Hong Kong, grossing an estimated $1.9 million for the weekend ($7.0 million including previews), setting a record for the highest sneak previews of all time. https://collider.com/inside-out-2-global-box-office-1-3-billion/7m is a little high. I have it at 6.5m but it's still an excellent opening. _______________________ Deadpool & Wolverine is opening on July 24. It is looking a bit shaky in pre-sales so far. IMAX showings are very strong but regular showings are lagging well behind. Opening Wednesday's 7 PM showtime is about 5-40% filled. After that, its Friday 7 PM showtime is about 10% filled at maximum at most locations. It still has time to turn it around with more than a week left of pre-selling but it's had almost 2 weeks of pre-selling. At this pre-sales pace though, theaters may only give it 3-4 screens which would benefit the main holdovers the most.

Now confirmed with actuals. Inside Out 2 dominates with a 6.5m opening weekend including previews. It should be able to gross more than 8m by next Sunday. Despicable Me 4 is declining quite fast. It will have one last chance to get its act together this week as Twisters does not seem like a formidable foe to anyone. Theaters are very cautiously monitoring Deadpool & Wolverine's pre-sales. Some theaters have released their 2nd biggest screens already on Wednesday-Friday with D&W gaining most of it. Inside Out 2 has managed to snag a couple of showings on all 3 days on the 2nd biggest screen at multiple theaters. It seems that theaters are leaning toward 3-4 screens right now for D&W but that could change if it sees a massive spike in pre-sales this weekend.

Re: HK 7/18 THU: Inside Out 2 leads; D&W flopping except in
Inside Out 2 is #1 again on Thursday. It has already passed 7m total and is currently aiming for about a 1.25m weekend (-34% from last weekend, -81% from last Sunday's total gross including previews). This would be an OK hold but it needs to have a -25% weekend hold from last weekend to get good screens and showtimes for next week. Total gross would increase to 8.4m after 11 days. _____________________________________ Deadpool & Wolverine is still quite lopsided in favor of opening day with regular theaters. Some Friday night 7 PM showings remain less than 5% full. Some regular theaters have hidden Deadpool & Wolverine's weekend or Thursday-Sunday screenings. What that means is anybody's guess. It continues to be a beast in IMAX though. Some showings are already 75% sold out. Interesting to note that at iSquare IMAX, some special screenings are 1/3 more expensive coming in at $270 HK ($34.31 US) per ticket over the regular priced showings of $180 HK ($22.87) and they are either sold out or close to selling out.

Re: HK 7/24 WKD PROJ: Deadpool & Wolverine falls apart
Deadpool & Wolverine opening weekend estimate - $2,950,000 (5-day)
For Deadpool & Wolverine to make 3m OW, it needs to mimic some animated films and increase big from Saturday which was around $750,000. This is a major disappointment for Marvel and the theater operators who were really hoping this movie would be a breakout hit. Judging how some theater chains gave this 4-5 screens, the admissions didn't merit that level of commitment from them.
Inside Out 2, meanwhile, passed 9m this weekend and should be close to or at 9.3m by Sunday. 10m will happen in about 10 days or less.

Ok start for Deadpool & Wolverine. It performed around my expectations. I'm sure many people expected more. Inside Out 2 fell quite hard with Deadpool opening. There were signs last week of demand easing when Twisters opened. Twisters is performing quite well. It might get to 1.5m. Despicable Me 4 had another iffy hold. 5m is not happening. _____________________________________________ Doraemon: Nobita's Earth Symphony was #1 on Thursday. Including sneak previews, it made around $243,196. For the weekend, it is looking at about $740,000. Deadpool & Wolverine fell to #2 on Thursday, however, it should easily climb back to #1 this weekend with about $1,090,000 ( -62%) for a running total of about 4.55m. Inside Out 2 passed 9.5m and it will gross 10m next week.

Deadpool & Wolverine had quite a big drop from opening weekend. With only a -42% hold, it means that it took Deadpool 7 days just to make 58% of Deadpool & Wolverine's 5-day opening weekend. 5m will be passed this week. Inside Out 2 continues its journey toward 10m. It has slowed considerably though. 11m is likely out of reach now unless if it has terrific holds the next few weeks. 10m is still happening this week. Very good opening for Doraemon: Nobita's Earth Symphony. I think it might be the biggest opening for the Doraemon films released in late July/early August every year. It also excludes the Stand By Me Doraemon films. Twisters had an OK hold. 1.5m might still happen. Despicable Me 4 had a good hold but it may only get to 4.5m.

Not great for Deadpool & Wolverine. Even without much competition, it held less than half of its 2nd week audience. 6m is still likely to happen. Doraemon's hold looks deceiving. Usually, single digit drops in its 2nd week translates to about a -40% drop from last weekend. It should make it to 1.5m total. Inside Out 2 had a somewhat better hold but it is $9m HK behind Toy Story 3. $85m HK ($10.8m US) looks to be its final stop. _______________________________ Alien: Romulus opens today and will be the #1 film this weekend. It has taken away all of Deadpool's IMAX screens and is looking at about a 1-1.2m opening weekend. Pre-sales look great in IMAX but quite slow in regular theaters. I think people are waiting to see the reviews before making a decision to see it. Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine is aiming for about a -60% hold from last weekend.
