Re: HK 4/5 WED: Mario grabs records [UPDATED]; biggest 2023
Wednesday Estimated Actuals
1. The Super Mario Bros Movie - $693,003 (opening day actual), around 73,500 admissions from 688 showings, average ticket price $74 2. Over My Dead Body - $190,830, around 21,400 admissions from 304 showings, average ticket price $70/$473,892 (including previews) 3. John Wick 4 - $169,429/$3,287,946 4. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - $57,962/no total given 5. Suzume - $44,204/$3,236,989
Others: Air - $22,675/$36,561
Very good opening day for Super Mario Bros. As previously mentioned by Deadline, this took the crown for the biggest opening day of any Illumination/Universal Pictures animated film. With really strong word of mouth so far, how much demand has already been spent and whether it will continue holding well with evening shows into this weekend will be interesting to watch.
Over My Dead Body performed somewhat disappointingly considering how well it performed with its sneaks. We may see it build over its Wednesday gross on Friday-Sunday if WOM spreads quickly.
John Wick 4 came in 3rd with a respectable gross. If it holds well, it might be able to collect 3.8m by Sunday.
Air disappeared as audiences were thin on the Wednesday holiday. If it captures word of mouth, it might be able to get to $150,000 by Sunday but it's still a disastrous opening.

Demand seems to be slowing down for Mario. If it can get to 65,000-70,000 admissions today, it would be a good hold. Over My Dead Body rose the biggest out of any top 10 entry which could be a signal for long legs. Don't like that week-to-week hold for John Wick 4. Although it lost showings, with the supposed excellent word of mouth, it shouldn't drop that much from a non-holiday Friday. Suzume continues to impress.

This table gives us a more accurate depiction of what is going in with pre-sales. Super Mario drops more than 25% from holiday Wednesday's pre-sales while Over My Dead Body ticks up more than 10%. John Wick 4 and Dungeons & Dragons both lost 13% of pre-sales from Wednesday. Suzume looks solid. Air also seems to be swaying moviegoers toward it. Part 4 of Easter weekend pre-sales

Comparison to Opening Wednesday's pre-sales from WednesdaySuper Mario Bros: -24.3% from Super Mario Bros. Movie's Wednesday pre-sales taken on Wednesday Over My Dead Body: +14.0% from Over My Dead Body's Wednesday pre-sales taken on Wednesday John Wick 4: -34.0% from John Wick 4's Wednesday pre-sales taken on Wednesday Good for Mario to claw back 17% in pre-sales from the last update. The Wednesday-Friday drop at this theater is in line with what Mario is doing city wide. Over My Dead Body rose from its Wednesday pre-sales at this theater. Instead of it being 4x lower than Mario's Wednesday pre-sales, it has reduced the gap by 1.5x on Friday to less than a 3x multiplier. John Wick 4 was slightly behind Over My Dead Body's Wednesday pre-sales but that has now widened to a 2x gap on Friday. Luckily, its city wide drop is not reflective of what is happening at this individual theater but are we starting to see signs of its core audience moving onto other movies?

Bad hold from Friday for Mario. Very good hold for Over My Dead Body. Terrible hold for John Wick 4. Suzume had an average week-to-week hold. Ugly hold for Dungeons & Dragons. Air also did poorly.

We can definitely see the progression of how this weekend is unfolding now that we have 3 holiday data points to look at. When we compare Saturday pre-sales with Wednesday's pre-sales, every film except for Over My Dead Body dropped. Super Mario has seen 40+% of its Wednesday pre-sales evaporate on Saturday and early pre-sales for tomorrow and Monday have it trending similar to today's pre-sales hold from Friday. Over My Dead Body has already beaten Mario on a head-to-head basis for a single showing today at one theater when Super Mario was extremely ahead of Over My Dead Body with the same showing on Wednesday. If it truly is getting great word of mouth here, it is certainly not seeing it with admissions as its pre-sales have seen the worst drops of the top 3 for the past 3 days. At this rate, 2.5m for a 5-day weekend is not a lock and chances of 3m have completely vanished. I currently have it taking in 2.55m for the 5-day weekend despite its hard drops so far.

Though it snatched all the 4DX showings away from John Wick 4 and got an extra showing at 1:30 PM, it wasn't quite able to increase from Friday's pre-sales at this theater. Over My Dead Body's 3:35 PM showing has skewed its hold from Friday. It is a meet and greet showing and its high volume of sales is affecting Over My Dead Body's hold from Friday. If it was a normal showing and it did the same business as the pre-sales from Friday's 3:35 PM showing, the whole day would have decreased by 7.8%. The loss of John Wick 4's 11 AM showing killed its pre-sales. It also lost the 9 PM 4DX showing to Mario which didn't help.

Good start for Super Mario Bros. What was concerning for the first days is the huge pre-sales drops day-to-day but it did recover on Sunday to have the best pre-sales drop of the top 3. Over My Dead Body started off softly but built as the weekend went on. This could mean it will stay solid heading into next weekend.

Bluebomb, how far do your admissions records go?
Do you have a list of all the movies with 1m admissions since TITANIC?

mark66 wrote: Do you have a list of all the movies with 1m admissions since TITANIC? No. It's scattered at the moment. I will provide an update on this later. April 6 (Easter) Weekend Estimate Actuals1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $2,499,913 (5-day, opening weekend actual) 2. Over My Dead Body - $1,142,751 (6-day, opening weekend actual including previews) 3. John Wick 4 - $440,793 ( -48.1%) [4-day], $610,222 [5-day]/$3,732,734 Air - $113,638 (5-day, opening weekend actual) It's unclear if The Super Mario Bros. actually crossed 2.5m. Full actuals will be able to clear this up later on this week. Overall, Mario is above Minions: The Rise of Gru's OW by +52.1% but below Minions' OW by -29.6% without previews and -43.0% with previews. In the coming weeks, it doesn't face much competition unless if Renfield breaks out when it releases on April 20. It is the only major animated film out there until Elemental which isn't out until June 15. 5m total seems very likely at this point however the drop from Wednesday to Sunday is quite concerning to me. It went from $693,000 on Wednesday to just $471,000 on Sunday. Over My Dead Body was fairly steady all week. This could become a strong holdover as there is minimal local fare to compete for screens in the next few weeks. John Wick 4 looked weaker as the holidays wore on. It is unlikely to make much more than 4m. Perhaps 4.1-4.2m final.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie fell short of 2.5m OW. After that really good start on Wednesday, it was surprising to watch it tumble in pre-sales on Friday and Saturday. Even though it stayed flat in pre-sales on Sunday, the damage was already done. Where it goes from here will be determined by how well it holds this weekend. It has already passed 3m and 4m will happen by Sunday unless if it collapses. Over My Dead Body opened to decent results. I believe this will be one of those films that lasts for weeks in theaters. It is already showing signs of holding well. Tuesday and Wednesday pre-sales have seen it held significantly better than most of the other top holdovers. John Wick 4 steadily disappeared as the holidays came to a close. It has already sunk below 1,000 admissions in pre-sales on Tuesday and Wednesday. It looks like it will finish below 4.5m. Though Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves had the "best" hold, it is technically a 7-day holiday infused week being compared to a normal 4-day opening weekend. There's nothing great about falling 7% under these circumstances. It might just crack $800,000 before it leaves theaters. Suzume showed its staying power as it consistently had the best pre-sales holds out of any film during the holidays and now into the regular work week. It will blast through 3.5m and could gross about 3.7-3.8m total. Air took no one's breath away opening to an astonishingly poor $114,000 for its 5-day opening weekend. It might be able to get to $300,000 with very good word of mouth.

Terrible hold for Mario. Last Thursday was not a holiday, therefore, today's drops are mostly reflective of how films are doing post holiday. Over My Dead Body held pretty well. A Light Never Goes Out starts off tepidly.

Re: HK 4/12 THU: Mario leaves Dead Body in its dust
Thursday Estimated Actuals1. The Super Mario Bros Movie - $150,326/$3,477,887 2. Over My Dead Body - $61,149/$1,516,002 3. John Wick: Chapter 4 - $30,192/$3,912,304 4. A Light Never Goes Out - $15,287 (opening day actual)/$57,837 5. Suzume - $10,446/$3,443,490 Note: There are no weekend drops for any holdover this week due to last week's irregular posting schedule. Pre-sales might have looked bad for The Super Mario Bros but finals don't look too bad. If I'm eyeballing its hold from last Thursday, it would be a little over a 50% drop. It is still on pace to hit 4m by Sunday with about an $800,000 2nd weekend, -67.9% from its 5-day opening weekend for a 12 day total of over 4.1m. Over My Dead Body fell around 40% from last Thursday. 2m will have to wait until its weekdays next week as it should collect around $365,000, -64.4% from its 6-day opening weekend for a 1.82m total after 13 days. John Wick 4 will also join the 4m ranks this weekend albeit it will probably do it one day faster than Mario. It is lining up toward a 4.05m total after this weekend. A Light Never Goes Out flickered and wasn't able to get any spark on opening day. It is looking like it will miss $100,000 for opening weekend without previews. Suzume continues its run in the top 5. 3.5m might not happen by Sunday. If it doesn't, it should pass it on Monday.

10 | Lonely Castle in the Mirror | 365 | 145 | -60.3% | +17.9% |
Today's holds for all films will be the worst of the weekend as drops will recover tomorrow and on Sunday.

Much better holds all around as every single holdover held 10% better in pre-sales today than yesterday. Mario had a strong increase on Saturday but it is offsetting Friday's decrease a bit. Decent increase for Over My Dead Body. Ugly increases for John Wick 4 and A Light Never Goes Out.

Superb increase for Mario. It's the 2nd Sunday in a row where it has had a strong turnaround from the previous few days. Meanwhile, Over My Dead Body had a 2nd Sunday in a row where it dropped a decent amount from the previous few days.
| Weekend Projections | | | April 13 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | The Super Mario Bros. Movie | $820,000 | -67.1% | $4,145,000 |
2 | Over My Dead Body | $345,000 | -66.3% | $1,800,000 |
3 | John Wick: Chapter 4 | $150,000 | -66.0% | $4,030,000 |
4 | A Light Never Goes Out | $61,000 | | $103,500 |
5 | Suzume | $52,000 | -59.4% | $3,485,000 |
For the top 2's holds from last week, Super Mario Bros's drop is from its 5-day opening weekend while Over My Dead Body's drop stems from its 6-day opening weekend. Both John Wick 4 and Suzume are the usual 4-day weekend as the Wednesday holiday last week was not added into its holds. Nothing really stood out in terms of these drops although Mario seems to have the edge over the other holdovers with a strong Sunday.

Do you have a list of all the movies with 1m admissions since TITANIC? Not very far, I'm afraid. I only have the admissions from 2017-2021. Admissions weren't released prior to 2017 so no luck on admissions for big movies like Titanic or Avatar. I also would have liked to see the admissions prior to the big boom circa the 80's-2010's.

All 5 films increased from projections. Super Mario is on its way to 5m. It will probably achieve this by Sunday at the earliest. Normally holds by the top 2 this week would be horrific but since last week was mostly comprised of holidays, these are very understandable drops from both. Over My Dead Body will get to 2m possibly by Friday. John Wick 4 adds another milestone to the franchise...the first 4m grosser of the series. It has been re-added into IMAX due to the disappointment of Mario there but it is only a placeholder until when Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opens on May 3. Suzume wasn't quite able to make it to 3.5m but it will do so today. Dungeons & Dragons should be able to gross $800,000 before leaving theaters. A Light Never Goes Out was nowhere to be seen.

Bad start for Mad Fate. Once again, Super Mario Bros. will have to dig itself out of the hole from pre-sales. Ok for Over My Dead Body. Disastrous for The Pope's Exorcist and Renfield. Fueled by prominent wins from the HKFA earlier this week, Lost Love and Sunny Side of the Street increased from last Thursday's pre-sales. Avatar: The Way of Water is being re-released beginning today ahead of Earth Day later this weekend. It ended its original run earlier this month. A couple of IMAX theaters and one regular theater will have limited showings of the blockbuster each day.

Excellent increase for Super Mario. Over My Dead Body was majorly skewed by 16 fully booked meet and greets on Saturday. Without them, admissions would have been less than 3,500. Not bad for Mad Fate. Word of mouth seems to be taking shape now. April 20 Weekend Projections1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $520,000 ( -48.0%)/$5,070,000 2. Mad Fate - $275,000 3. Over My Dead Body - $260,000 ( -33.2%)/$2,255,000 Super Mario will retain the #1 spot for a 3rd weekend losing around half of its take from last weekend while Mad Fate should just beat out Over My Dead Body for #2. Over My Dead Body's supersized Saturday won't be enough to offset the harsh incoming Sunday drop and it will fall behind Mad Fate once more.

Reposting due to obvious omissions from local/Chinese language films. Year end data was split into 3 different sections: foreign (which was posted before), local and Chinese language films outside of HK. All 3 have now been merged to complete the top 50 admissions of 2018 and 2019. * - Admissions only counted up to December 31, 2018 Aquaman was originally shown to have just made the top 10, however, that number only included admissions up to December 31, 2018. There is no asterisk now since its admissions number has been amended to account for its entire run. For more context, since Aquaman made the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, the final admissions number from its entire run was included. Other late releasing films of 2018 outside the yearly top 10 did not have the same treatment.

All 3 were underestimated from projections. Mario jumps past 5m. A final total of about 5.7-5.8m with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opening next week seems probable. Unless if GotG 3 gets some sort of sneak previews on the May 1 holiday, next weekend will be Mario's last weekend to make some sort of impact. Its weekdays already are looking sluggish but Saturday and Sunday doubles-triples its weekday grosses. Over My Dead Body held decently this week but it will be hit by Marry My Dead Body officially opening on Thursday. A final total of about 2.7m seems likely. Mad Fate wasn't able to overcome Mario's humungous Saturday/Sunday and a total below $900,000 is possible. ______________________________________ Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opens next Wednesday (May 3) but there are no showings available for the general public to buy tickets yet. Normally, these superhero releases gets 2 weeks (or 3 if you're a major tentpole like Avengers: Endgame or Avatar: The Way of Water) of pre-selling but this is down to just 8 days before release with no regular or IMAX showtimes posted. With lack of buzz, I could see it banking just 1m for the 5-day opening, which would take it to a new low for the franchise.

Weak competition helped holdovers drop less than 50%. It seems everyone is waiting for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 next week. ________________________________________ One day of pre-sales for GOTG 3 and already some IMAX showings have sold over 100 seats. Opening day is doing the best in sales by far in regular and IMAX showings. I've seen fairly decent 7 PM showings across the board in regular theaters on Wednesday.

Re: HK: Cinema Day leads to rotating circle of doom; all $30
Saturday is Cinema Day where all movies are heavily discounted to just $30 HK ($3.81 US) citywide. This includes IMAX and all formats.
As expected, all online ticketing theater chain websites have crashed and gone down for at least a period of time since pre-sales started just 45 minutes ago.
From what I was able to see, many showings are selling out fast. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a major upgrade on Saturday while other top holdovers such as Over My Dead Body and Mad Fate were slashed quite a bit. Marry My Dead Body lost one or two showings but is able to retain most showings due to its status as an opener.
In IMAX so far, films such as John Wick 4, The First Slam Dunk, The Super Mario Bros. Movie all receive showings. Avatar 2 will not despite playing every other day this weekend including holiday Monday. I suspect its because theaters want to maximize showings so they are sticking with more recent and shorter releases.
Early thoughts on this special day could see the biggest films surge 10x+ in admissions and something like 4-5x or perhaps more in gross from Friday.
I will have another update on this when the dust settles tomorrow.

Ouch for Marry My Dead Body. Excellent hold for Mad Fate. Super Mario Bros. held quite well from last Friday. __________________________________ Tomorrow's Cinema Day has many movies reaping the rewards. Some theaters are nearly sold out for the entire day. The Super Mario Bros. and Marry My Dead Body are benefiting the most with the largest amount of showings. I believe Super Mario Bros. will start off with more than 40,000 admissions accrued from 340+ showings tomorrow while Marry My Dead Body will be behind with about 30,000 from more than 350+ showings.

Average admissions per showing1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - 147 (from 390 showings) 2. Marry My Dead Body - 94 (from 433 showings) 3. Mad Fate - 108 (from 234 showings) 4. Over My Dead Body - 114 (from 177 showings) The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Marry My Dead Body both increased their showtime count from yesterday with 390 and 433 respectively. These showtimes includes Friday midnights, Saturday midnights and any additional showings since yesterday. Admissions include any blocked off seats. Superb showing for Mario. Marry My Dead Body has been very frontloaded. By virtue of being placed in the smaller screens, Mad Fate and Over My Dead Body have lower average admissions per showing than Mario. Saturday Gross1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $220,934 2. Marry My Dead Body - $157,126 3. Mad Fate - $97,246 4. Over My Dead Body - $77,788 These numbers are what each movie has taken in so far with pre-sales, however, it does not mean that these will be the reported numbers when actuals come out. Depending on how its box office is counted, these grosses may be much higher if studios/MPIA decide to use full ticket prices. Saturday gross using full ticket prices1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $530,243 2. Marry My Dead Body - $366,629 3. Mad Fate - $236,632 4. Over My Dead Body - $181,506 Looks much better, right? This scenario is not unprecedented. Avatar 2 saw the exact same thing happen on its 4th weekend when 2 theater chains slashed its ticket prices by $30-35 but when grosses were reported, it was not only unaffected but may have increased from the previous week's average ticket price. Admissions aren't going to go up by much for most films so these numbers can almost be taken as final admissions for today. Maybe an extra 500-2,000 for Super Mario to around 5,000 for Marry My Dead Body at the most.

Re: HK 4/29 SAT: Movies skyrocket on Cinema Day
A total of 52 films partook in Cinema Day yesterday. Total pre-sales admissions yesterday was a rocking 201,430.
| Sunday adm. | (so far) | | | April 30 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | The Super Mario Bros. Movie | 8,767 | 7,970 | -9.1% | -86.1% |
2 | Marry My Dead Body | 1,351 | 6,698 | +395.8% | -83.6% |
3 | Mad Fate | 4,830 | 4,802 | -0.6% | -81.0% |
4 | Over My Dead Body | 3,356 | 2,698 | -19.6% | -86.7% |
5 | The Pope's Exorcist | 1,236 | 1,009 | -18.4% | -85.5% |
6 | John Wick: Chapter 4 | 525 | 634 | +20.8% | -- |
7 | Suzume | 464 | 611 | +31.7% | -85.9% |
8 | A City of Sadness | -- | 601 | -- | -- |

10 | Lost Love | 548 | 490 | -10.6% | -91.7% |
To finish off these weekend's pre-sales, every film dropped pretty well. The holiday Monday has boosted holds today, however, the cheap day yesterday hasn't dampened moviegoers today. ___________________________________________ Now we turn our attention back to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 which opens on Wednesday. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be getting a price bump of $15-$30 depending on theater chain location due to long runtime and possibly added blockbuster surcharge. Let's look at the schedules first. Wednesday schedulesNote: Showtimes in parentheses are from Tuesday. All holdovers are leaving Tuesday unless otherwise specified.MCL

After the initial wave of admissions, it seems admissions stopped coming in at most regular theaters. This is a very worrying start for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It is behind Ant-Man 3's pre-sales at the same point in time. It does have some time to turn it around as its release is a few days away.
