Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/24-25); Charts Update
New trailer for Suzume No Tojimari (Suzume's Locking Up or Suzume's Door Locking... do we have an official English title yet?).
Looks great. Still dislike the release date, but if the film delivers (more Your Name. than Weathering With You), then it won't matter much.
And the latest poster:

I think the English title is just "Suzume", or at least that's the one that most English sites and twitter anime news accounts are using

Haven't been a fan of recent Shinkai films, this looks more fun to me.

The Uta Live in Cinema showings have filled up well enough, I think. Nothing crazy, but they're also not until 2:50PM versus the usual 11AM (or so) times for special live-broadcast showings, so there's still time for them to improve further. Some are 50% full now, and many are around 30% or so right now. Important to note that this showing is on the largest screens at some theaters, which aren't easy to fill for a film in its ninth weekend (unless you're Demon Slayer). And some of the busier locations either have marked standard/premium showings (50%+ full) or have some that are very close to being marked. Not expecting a huge Saturday/weekend increase, but I think Saturday can do 150,000+ admissions and ¥200 million+. Sunday will likely see a steep drop from Saturday this weekend though, so Sat. will likely need to be more like ~¥225-250 million to achieve a ninth weekend increase. The goal after Sunday is to be ~¥1 billion, preferably less, away from entering the All-Time Top 10.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/24-25); Charts Update
Saturday presales (including the Uta Live Cinema Broadcast) are 135% above last Saturday. The Saturday from two Saturdays ago was up 92% in presales, which lead to a seventh weekend increase of 18%. This Saturday should be more frontloaded than the seventh weekend from two weeks ago, so we'll have to keep that in mind.
If I had to make a prediction, I think a weekend increase of ~25% or so should be doable.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/24-25); Charts Update
What is the second Uta Live showings only listed with the independent theaters? Should I use the ~85,000 total using that, or ~77,000 without it?
I just saw that the double-feature of Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick appears to have ended, so TGM will probably experience a bigger (for it) decline this weekend since the double-feature admissions/earnings were being added to the standalone TGM. It held remarkably well itself as a result (off just 1%, maybe flat or up when the final update comes in), but the double-feature was adding a good bit to it.

I see it in the regular one too (they are respectively at #10 and #14 on the 7PM update), so I just added it and counted 84k. As for what the difference is, honestly no idea. Was wondering the same thing to be honest.

Oh, I'm totally blind! Thanks.
I think one allows for singing/cheering along with Uta's show after the movie, while the other is meant to be "silent" (probably out of COVID concerns). But I'm not too sure. I think these had higher ticket prices, but nothing extreme (like double or something). I'll take off 7/8% of last weekend's avg. ticket price instead of 10% that's fairly common on discount days.

At the usual locations, they accounted for about 16% of the overall ticket sales. That'll counteract the discounted tickets for the non-live showings, but determining how much is sort of guess work. SO... discount days usually shave off 10% or so on the avg. ticket price, so I'm going to do 8% off last weekend's avg. ticket price in this case for today's estimate. Very good day, and it's headed for the 7th-9th Biggest Ninth Weekend Ever. But I think this also shows that the repeat business of the fanbase has mostly been exhausted now (probably down to a couple hundred thousand who are reliably coming back for a fifth time or more) since the increase this weekend, if it does achieve one (Sunday could drop enough to just miss an increase), is going to be quite small.

I have the weekend up just slightly (~2% revenue, ~7% in admissions), but the Saturday (discount day(cheaper tickets), live-showings (higher tickets)) makes it hard to predict the revenue with as much certainty this weekend. This is its ninth-consecutive weekend at #1. And it's a little over ¥1 billion away from surpassing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to enter the Top 10 All-Time.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (10/01-02)
Weekend Actuals (10/01-02) 01 (01) ¥341,583,160 ($2.36 million), -04%, ¥16,247,220,400 ($119.0 million), One Piece Film Red (Toei) WK9 02 (02) ¥213,793,100 ($1.48 million), -31%, ¥1,961,384,600 ($13.7 million), Silent Parade (Toho) WK3 03 (09) ¥142,724,250 ($985,000), +173%, ¥965,143,470 ($6.7 million), Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Starish Tours (Shochiku) WK5 04 (03) ¥126,326,350 ($872,000), -32%, ¥544,129,090 ($3.8 million), Delicious Party Pretty Cure: Dreaming Children's Lunch! (Toei) WK2 05 (---) ¥124,057,250 ($856,000), 0, ¥164,554,590 ($1.1 million), It's in the Woods (Shochiku) NEW 06 (06) ¥x55,500,250 ($383,000), -16%, ¥226,583,950 ($1.6 million), Avatar (re-release) (Disney) WK2 07 (---) ¥x53,909,200 ($372,000), 0, ¥x53,909,200 ($0.4 million), I Am Makimoto (Sony) NEW 08 (04) ¥x53,015,460 ($366,000), -50%, ¥13,034,019,711 ($97.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick (Towa Pictures) WK19 09 (05) ¥x40,315,040 ($278,000), -49%, ¥542,009,570 ($3.8 million), Hell Dogs (Toei, Sony) WK3 10 (07) ¥x35,119,620 ($242,000), -42%, ¥730,616,170 ($5.1 million), High & Low: The Worst X (Shochiku) WK4
>One Piece Film Red managed a 5% increase in admissions (272,000, bringing its total admissions up to 11,691,653), but the discount day was enough to drive its revenue hold to minus 4%. Still very impressive, of course, 9th biggest ninth weekend ever, but I think this shows that the impact of giveaways/events has mostly run their course in terms of providing large increases. They can, however, still keep the earnings stable, so it's possible they do something else in the coming weeks.
This was its ninth-consecutive weekend at #1. It's ¥1.054 billion away from entering the All-Time Top 10 now, and should break it toward the end of the month.
>Silent Parade is performing well, and unless October has an unexpected overperformer, is very likely going to be the top grossing film from September and October. Should be able to exceed ¥2.5 billion pretty easily, and while not super impressive or anything, it is a sort of lower/mid-sized film that 2022 has been lacking and needs.
>Uta no Prince Sama enjoyed a whopper of an increase (assuming a fan event/giveaway of some kind, not keeping track of it), and as such, is going to breeze past the ¥1 billion mark. Always good to have more ¥1 billion earners.
>Avatar's run ends on Thursday, I believe (2-week limited release), and should finish with around ¥275 million ($1.9 million). Admissions are currently 104,489, so expecting a finish there of about 125,000-130,000. This is currently being counted separately from the original run, but if it's like the batch of 2020 re-releases, it'll be added on at a later date.
>Top Gun: Maverick experienced its largest drop to date, and falls outside the Top 5 for the first time during its run. This is due to the double-feature showings with Top Gun having ended (they were being added to TGM itself) though, so it's a bit misleading. Still, I suspect its run will be drawing to a close in the next month or so unless it's left playing in a small amount of locations for months and months. As is, I would expect a finish around ¥13.3/13.4 billion ($99/99.5 million... I know, annoying finish, so hopefully it can do just a *little* bit more to hit $100 million). Also, its admissions are up to 8,099,708.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/01-02); Charts Update
I was hoping TGM would have a little more steam left to try and beat last samurai as a fun little goal of sorts, but I guess that wasn't very realistic. Still an excellent run of course.
As for OP, I think it was pretty unlikely already but this weekend probably locks it out of 20b as a possibility. Should be an 18b finish overall I guess.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/01-02); Charts Update
Hard to say on TGM. I feel they could leave it in theaters for many months still, so it could slowly keep adding to its total like Bohemian Rhapsody (played in theaters for a full year). If TGM has a similar performance, it'd be so close to The Last Samurai, that they'd get it over it somehow.
But this is a big ask. I don't know if they'll hold off on the home video release until next Spring. Beating Frozen II (¥13.37 billion) and cracking the Top 20 is probably the more realistic "ultimate" goal.
Also worth noting that, once it surpasses Bohemian Rhapsody next week, TGM will become the highest-grossing live-action film in Japan since Avatar in 2009.
