Re: The New Trailers Thread
It is the most watched film every year at home on Halloween. It would do minimum 150m domestic with a chance at more.

Re: The New Trailers Thread
You plucked that figure right out of thin air, lol. Is there no way it would make, say, $65 million? I think it most definitely "could", and if it did then that's probably not enough to entice Disney to risk going theatrical.
And there are countless examples of sequels doing poorly no matter how well-regarded their originals are (Dumb and Dumber To, Son of the Mask, Space Jam 2, etc.). I see the rationale behind Disney putting it on Disney+. I'm sure it would do well, but doing well can be arrived at in a multiple of ways. Hocus Pocus 2 is also exactly the type of property where it could surprise everyone and disappoint, and Disney took the best of both worlds; if it's huge they'll benefit with subscriptions, if it's not they'll hide it.

If Hocus Pocus 2 is a theatrical "risk" then everything is.

Re: The New Trailers Thread
Show me the numbers.
On IMDB, it has 121,000 votes, which is less than Casper, and a few thousand more than Monster House. The Nightmare Before Christmas has 328,000 votes. And Hocus Pocus only has a 6.9 score. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 71% audience score while The Nightmare Before Christmas has 91%. Does that scream "most beloved Halloween movie ever and a sequel is guaranteed to do $150 million domestically"? It doesn't to me. I'm not trying to be difficult here, I'm just looking for some sign that its home video/TV popularity would translate to box office success beyond you just having the feeling that it would be huge because you like the 1993 original. And again, I'm sure it would do well. I love the film, but I just don't see any proof that it's an assured box office hit and all the Disney execs are fools for not seeing it.

It was the number one Halloween movie in the Nielsen streaming ratings last year.
I actually dislike the original

Re: The New Trailers Thread
That's impressive, obviously, but still doesn't signify that a sequel would be huge, in my opinion. It does signify that it wouldn't flop, though. And as I said, I reckon it could do nicely providing expectations were in check. Watching a film that's already part of your subscription package isn't the same as spending $100(?) to take the family to see its sequel at the cinema. It's the same psychology as to why big screen TV adaptations don't always break out.

This is unforgiveable.

Yes, this has more potential than Marry Me, but on a personal level I think it looks lame (and the trailer shows the entire film, lol). I'm also not sure how much pull Julia Roberts and George Clooney have anymore. The comedy isn't smart, but I'm not sure that matters in terms of it being appealing to the masses, just look at The Lost City.

Looks very generic, though I'd love if it did well and we could return to an era of star driven rom coms.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is so immature and small in scale. It looks way inferior to most superhero movies that have gone before it. If it wasn't coming out at Christmas, I believe it would struggle to reach the first's gross.

It does look very good. It reminds me Calvary in many ways, mixed with In Bruges. But it doesn't strike me as a big awards contender.

Would make absolute bank if it opened theatrically in 2 weeks.

Re: The New Trailers Thread
Agreed. It looks really cinematic. Hanks could've have three hits in one year. But Disney are going all-in with their Disney+ strategy.

Re: The New Trailers Thread
This probably had the most theatrical potential of the Disney+ originals. In a good date, probably would have cleared $300 million (surely $250m or something as a floor).
I get making some films Disney+ originals, but not a film like this one.

Disney+ should just focus on making more shows. I can't imagine putting Pinnochio, Turning Red and Hocus Pocus is moving the needle for their streaming service all that much. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but movies feel more important when released in theaters and I bet Thor,Lightyear, MoM made just as much impact on subscribers, if not more, than these day and date movies.

Re: The New Trailers Thread
This has jumped to the top of my most anticipated list for the rest of 2022. I wasn't really paying attention and had no idea they were going full Walk Hard with it. Though I suppose it makes sense that a parody artist would have a parody movie.
