Quote: Beast is an American survival thriller film directed by Baltasar Kormákur from a screenplay by Ryan Engle, based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan. The film stars Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley, and Leah Sava Jeffries. The story revolves around a widowed father (Elba) and his two teenage daughters (Halley, Sava Jeffries) who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savanna has but one apex predator.
Beast was released in the United States on August 19, 2022, by Universal Pictures.

Re: Beast
Beast is a bit of a mixed bag. The technical aspects are outstanding; the lions look great and the long-tracking shots add tension. There's one part where the lions charges the car full speed and you can feel the impact pop out of the screen. It gives you everything you could want from a monster mash.
But, despite the fact that the movie tells you these people are very intelligent and resourceful, they act like typical horror characters anytime they get a chance. The phrase "stay in the car" was probably used at least two or three dozen times, and all it ever accomplished was guaranteeing that the recepient did not stay in the car. Hey, what could go wrong wandering around by yourself when there's a vicious lion nearby? Made me want to root for the lion.
So I'll give a 6.5/10ish. Satisfying as a chomp fest, and very well-made, but could/should have been more.

Re: Beast
This is a disappointing film. For a film shot in South Africa it is completely uninterested in wildlife, and it doesn't use its environment well at all - I was convinced it was shot in the U.S. by how small and limited the production feels. The film also suffers from a lack of gore and peril. The former is odd because it's an R, but it just doesn't entertain that, which is weird being a movie about a killer lion. It had an opportunity whereby if it isn't a great film narratively it could still offer something visually, but it simply doesn't care. The absence of fear and suspense is down to two things; the unconvincing performances and the photorealistic lion - the latter just never conjures the type of on-screen presence that it should, though in isolation (or compared with The Lion King) the effects are top-notch. And you just know everybody will be fine. In that regard it's more an action movie than a survival thriller. Usually Elba is decent, but here he's pretty bad. He just cannot do the whole daddy thing (nor can he do an American accent!) and whenever the focus is on the family's drama it is an instant buzzkill.
But the film throws you into the action thick and fast, which I liked. Sharlto Copley is decent. It's so natural for him, whereas the two girls and Elba strangely feel so out of place in Africa. The dialogue is pretty bad, too. The script ultimately just isn't believable. An example of this is how Idris is in and out of the water, but not once does he have to contend with a crocodile. The characters are typically dumb, with two defenceless girls wandering around without fear. It's frustrating, and definitely not edge-of-your-seat excitement. And that final fight is laughable how Idris isn't instantly ripped to shreds like the lion's previous thirty five kills in the movie. Again, the movie shows its action hero intentions rather than its survival horror ones.
