why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first summer
summer blockbuster since the 90s to make less than 20% of its total on opening weekend?
yes it is even more leggy than Pixar originals like Finding Nemo and Ratatouille

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
Mainly because people liked it that much, but the crazy part is its opening weekend was outrageous as well
Maybe some of the people who are normally non-starters for Cruise movies eventually came around. Both Top Gun movies are unique in mixing ultra masculine appeal + still having romance to appeal to female audiences.

The first is still beloved and this has been long awaited.
Always knew it would open big (say $80m) but nobody could have envisaged the legs. And they are because it is a good crowd pleaser that handles the nostalgia perfectly.

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
There's so many astonishing stats about this run but having the best multiplier for an $80M+ movie ever while opening on Memorial Day weekend for me takes the cake. It's supposed to be one of the most frontloaded weekends of the year and TGM is pushing towards $700M as it moves toward almost 3 full months in release and still in 3000+ theaters (5.52 multiplier at $700M). It was also 36 years wait in the making which doesn't translate to a multiplier like this with a potential fan rush out.
If TGM opened a weekend before, it highly likely would have gone up Memorial Weekend and probably could have done a $110M/700M type run (6.36 multiplier estimate) as people waited to see it over the holiday.

It's made it to the magic number I'm eagerly anticipating Thursday's number. If it stays above $1 million again that will mean it converts to 73 days above $1 million.

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
Apparently it had a Thursday of $1.17 million, so it's up to 73 days over $1 million (including the coming weekend) - it will be only 8 days shy of beating Avatar. I wouldn't rule anything out, but I think it might not get to 74 days. I think it's done, but what a run!
CONSECUTIVE DAYS OVER $1 MILLION:
101 Titanic
80 Avatar 80 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
73 Top Gun: Maverick
61 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
59 Finding Nemo 54 Back to the Future 54 Ghostbusters 54 Jurassic Park 54 Shrek 2 52 Aladdin (2019) 52 The Avengers 52 Black Panther 52 The Hangover 52 Incredibles 2 52 Shrek 52 Toy Story 4

It's down 16% Thursday to Thursday. If it dropped 17.6% or less next Thursday, it could make it all the way to August 15 over 1m per day

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
In 1986, Aliens and TG were both in the top 5 for the year and in the weekend box office. Cruise won.
They faced each other in 1994 with True Lies and Interview With the Vampire where Cameron won.
TGM is about to pass Titanic this this weekend. But Cameron has Avatar 2 coming soon. Don't see Avatar topping it but the battle continues!

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
So, Top Gun: Maverick is up to 73 days (fingers crossed it stays above $1 million on Monday) but we also have Minions: The Rise of the Gru enter the list!
CONSECUTIVE DAYS OVER $1 MILLION:
101 Titanic
80 Avatar 80 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
73 Top Gun: Maverick
61 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
59 Finding Nemo 54 Back to the Future 54 Ghostbusters 54 Jurassic Park 54 Shrek 2 52 Aladdin (2019) 52 The Avengers 52 Black Panther 52 The Hangover 52 Incredibles 2 52 Shrek 52 Toy Story 4
48 The Passion of the Christ 47 Coco 47 Frozen 47 Moana 47 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 46 Batman 45 Avengers: Infinity War 45 The Blind Side 45 Bridesmaids 45 Cars 45 Frozen II 45 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 45 Inside Out 45 Jurassic World 45 The Sixth Sense 45 Spider-Man 45 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens 45 Toy Story 3 45 Up 45 Wonder Woman 43 Independence Day 41 Despicable Me 41 Finding Dory 41 The Secret Life of Pets 41 Spider-Man: Far from Home 41 Terminator 2: Judgment Day 40 The Dark Knight 40 Despicable Me 2 40 Despicable Me 3 40 Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 40 The Jungle Book (2016) 40 Spider-Man 2
39 A Star Is Born (2018) 39 Iron Man 39 Joker 38 American Sniper 38 Apollo 13 38 Avengers: Endgame 38 Beauty and the Beast (2017) 38 Bruce Almighty 38 The Dark Knight Rises 38 Deadpool 38 Elvis 38 Inception 38 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 38 Knocked Up 38 Kung Fu Panda 38 The Lion King (2019) 38 Maleficent 38 Minions: The Rise of Gru 38 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 38 The Proposal 38 Ratatouille 38 Saving Private Ryan 38 Shrek the Third 38 Spider-Man: Homecoming 38 Spider-Man: No Way Home 38 Wedding Crashers 38 Zootopia
I also tried finding data on older movies, but it's difficult. I'm pretty sure Forrest Gump did 52-54 days over $1 million. I'm sure Home Alone, Beverly Hills Cop, Mrs. Doubtfire, and 1994's The Lion King all had impressive tallies as well. Then there's something like Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, which Mojo only has 12 days of data, but it feels like it could have been leggy enough to make the list.

Re: why has Top Gun: Maverick seemingly become the first sum
Actually, Top Gun: Maverick is already up to 74 days because its preview day was over $19 million. But I can't be bothered to change the list for all films that didn't separate their previews from opening day.

I think a lot of its leggyness has to do with its demographic appeal

It's back on IMAX screens next weekend. That's why E.T. is getting limited showtimes.

*Counting from 1st wide release wknds* I believe it's #7 or #8 in terms of 11th weekend. This is my eleventh weekend list: 1. Titanic - $19,633,0562. Avatar - $13,655,2743. MBFGW - $8,453,1594. Beverly Hills Cop - $7,770,244 (4-day) 5. Aladdin (1992) - $7,687,1846. E.T. - $7,684,1627. Home Alone - $7,268,3348. Top Gun: Maverick - $7,029,7569. Mrs. Doubtfire - $6,916,809 10. Frozen - $6,872,81111. Slumdog Millionaire - $6,808,38312. The King's Speech - $6,230,22713. Forrest Gump - $6,066,317Unfortunately there's no 3-day number for Beverly Hills Cop. It was President's Day weekend, but it's so high that I believe the 3-day might be higher than Maverick's $7.02m number - though we can't say for sure. But the rest of the 11th weekend numbers are accurate (counting from their first wide weekend). Maverick also may go down with actuals to even below Mrs. Doubtfire, though unlikely.

7. Frozen
8. Golden Pond 9. Beverly Hills Cop

13. Million Dollar Baby 14. Home Alone
15. A New Hope
16. Platoon 17. Top Gun: Maverick

Box Office Mojo. The eleventh wide weekend's of Aladdin (1992) and MBFGW are as posted above. I just double checked. If you're going to check, you can't go by the 11th weekend list as this includes bogus weekends of runs that started in limited release. Check the movie pages of those movies and count eleven weekends from when they went wide (13th overall weekend for Aladdin and 26th overall weekend for MBFGW).

It dropped 16.7% this weekend. A testament to how amazing its run has been - that is only it's FOURTH best drop!
It also overtook Titanic on the all-time list. Now at #7. Next up is Avengers: Infinity War. It only has to make another $16,329,174 coming off a $7,006,064 weekend. I'd say that's in the bag.

I think people wanted a conservative "all american" type movie very badly, a niche that had not really been served since Avengers Endgame.

Wow. Appreciate the shoutout! The early demo data was so completely crazy, like 90% of the opening day audience over 25 and matinee box office higher than evenings it's OW that felt like a completely different type of run from the get go we hadn't seen in decades. It followed expectations closely week to week but didn't jump as much as I had expected was possible July long weekend. At this point I'm not even sure if it's going to struggle for $700M. It greatly benefitted from a lighter summer from absence of blockbuster after blockbuster too. As exciting as this run is to follow, I want them to greenlight TG3 as I feel it would have an even different run compared to TG1 and TGM.
