Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
CRAP. So AMC underindexed and it probably sold more adult tickets than what I thought. This is insane. This could get close to 1st movie OW(116m OW). Probably closer to 130m over 4 days !!!!!!

Hopefully this performance will show Disney that if they don't release mediocre animated films, people will come out to the theater for them.

A nice punch to the gut to Disney. Love it.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
Not only does this make Lightyear look bad, but every single film that was rushed out to theaters during the pandemic. Minions and Top Gun could have been shoved onto Peacock and Paramount to boost subs. The studios held onto them for two years though and are now reaping the profits.
What would Wonder Woman 1984 have opened to?

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
WW1984 would've opened to $150m+ for sure but... lol idk if it was in the summer legs probably would've been a little worse than Doctor Stange.
Bizarre to think Top Gun could've been shoved to streaming and we could've missed this historic run.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
So many films that likely left lots of $ on the table:
Tenet - Probably would have had an OW of at least what it made in total ($58M).
Spongebob movie - It did really well theatrically in Canada even in 2020 so probably would have cleaned up if they held on to it.
Hocus Pocus - Made $4.7M in fall 2020 as a re-release! If they did a theatrical release now probably would have possibly topped the original film's theatrical run. It's sequel would do $100M+ domestically if released theatrically.
Black Widow - Definitely feel it would have done $400M.
F9 - $250M+
NTTD - $250M
Encanto - $200M+ if a theatrical run only. The only run likely more badly executed than LY given how popular it became on streaming.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
Making Hocus Pocus and Enchanted sequels straight to D+ is pretty stupid unless they're super low budget.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
I think Hocus Pocus 2 would have done closer to 200 Million. If released the first weekend of September it would play all the way to Halloween. Disney is so fucking stupid for sending this to Disney+. It's baffling. They're leaving a lot of money on the table. The trailer views have been huge.

Empire City from BOT is reporting an even higher number for TGM than DL.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
its looking like 49m friday including previews. That is insane. Bigger OD than last minions movie though previews for last one was just 6.2m and so wont hit the last movie's OW.

So nice to see an animated film do these #s. This grossing more than the first in OD is pretty bonkers.

Let's not forget, that Friday was a holiday in Canada - Saturday bumps should be smaller than usual...

Quote: Stoking arthouse audiences’ appetites this weekend is Bleecker Street’s period piece Mr. Malcolm’s List from filmmaker Emma Holly Jones, which is posting an estimated $309K Friday, $901K 3-day and $1.06M 4-day for a 7th-place rank. https://deadline.com/2022/07/minions-ri ... 235055270/

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
Pretty crazy OD. $110-120m OW, $130-140m 4-day?
I was going to say that if Despicable Me 4 wasn't already planned, they have no reason not to greenlight it now, but it's already in development (July 3rd, 2024)! So, I suppose a Minions 3 can be greenlit now (if it's not already, too).
Very impressive longevity for this franchise.

Re: Minions 4th of July weekend
Early numbers $9-9.5m for TGM on Saturday.
Definitely no record in store but will still be a strong 3/4-Day number regardless.
