 Akira Akira Quote: Akira (アキラ, stylized as AKIRA) is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk science fiction film. It was written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, who based it on his manga of the same name. The film is set in a futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019. The film's plot focuses on Shotaro Kaneda, a biker gang member, as he tries to stop Tetsuo Shima from releasing Akira. While most of the character designs and basic settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation and film making in general.

Very dissapointing... I love anime but this was a mess, just like Ghost In The Shell. Maybe I need to rewatch those 2.

Probably the only occasion where I've watched a movie twice and still remained completely clueless as to what the hell was going on. It looked nice I suppose but as for everything else a big WTF!
C+ (even this grade is at best a wild guess)

Re: Akira I'm not entirely sure what they were trying to say with this movie. At first it seemed like "unchecked capitalism and militarism will lead to Japan being destroyed over and over." Yet ... then the movie kind of has you rooting for the capitalists and military by the end. Literally anybody who can stop Tetsuo from destroying the city is welcome. Maybe that is the point? That no matter how bad you think the people in charge are, there is always someone worse?
I read that this diverges pretty heavily from the Manga, and in a way is actually a commentary on the original story in the same way that Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One was. True/false?
Despite my confusion about the thematic material, I thought the story was engaging. The last 40ish minutes are very exciting, and I didn't want any of the characters to die in the explosive finale. So I'll give it a B+.

Re: Akira Um holy **** at that review from me being 17 years ago, and me calling Ghost in the Shell a mess! Wow.
I still need to rewatch this but I liked GitS a lot more when I saw it in IMAX last year.

Re: Akira This been on my list to see for a long time, knowing it's heralded as a classic and great film and I could catch it on Netflix now. But I felt pretty deflated by it, I've not been familiar with manga and this turned out to be not really my thing. The animation is good, but with the developments in that area in the last 30 years it doesn't stand out with it. And the story is a bit interesting, but just didn't get to me at all and maybe some of that is because things getting lost in translation as I watched the Japanese version with subtitles. The characters have like no back story, there's a bit of flashback at the end and are hardly introduced to and I just had a hard time being engaged by it. I can't say this is bad, but aside from the score there's not much good to it for me either.
