Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Indeed with theaters opening and movies doing good enough business it would make sense to do theatrical only window for say 2+ months and then do 1+ month stream on individual site/app. There after all home/digital media.

https://variety.com/2021/film/news/amc- ... 37677/amp/45-day window. Honestly that's fine. A Quiet Place 2's 45-day window worked.

45-day is good and was pretty inevitable in this market.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
So yeah, this all depends on the film. Ive been watching evefything thru HBO max and Disney Plus (even Black Widow) but once in a while (last time was the AQP2 IMAX preview) i will go to either VIP or IMAX theaters, I'm done with going to regular movie theaters.
I've signed too many death certificates due to covid that there are so little movies i'd risk my life for.

Odds of dying from a breakthrough infection is .007% if you are vaccinated, from what they have found so far. 1200 out of 164m.

You do realize I enter govid area twice a week and at least intubate 5 patients a week. The risk is high in my place of work. If i get covid it'll be from intubating patitents, not from going to the movies. I was being overdramatic

If Dune flops and they cancel any sequels because of this fuckery I will literally go to AT&T headquarters and protest.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Dune was probably gonna flop in October no matter what. HBO Max is the only hope for a sequel, or a delay back to December in Matrix's spot.
Hoping for the best though. They should try to tap into LOTR nostalgia.

I'm pretty much resigned to a Dennis Villeneuve adaptation of the entire series with a stellar cast and huge budget being too good to be true. What I do think will happen eventually is a Game of Thrones-style HBO series, which honestly should've probably been the way to go in the first place. It could've given GoT a run for its money, it's certainly in the same wheelhouse in terms of fanbase and the scope and tone are similar in a lot of ways. It also would've allowed for the very complex world to build more slowly and they could've really gone deep with the weirder parts of the series. I think after GoT there is an appetite for a similarly grand sci-fi/fantasy series with lots of complex family drama that people can really sink their teeth into and this would've fit the bill perfectly.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
A lot of people have referenced GoT for many series/material in recent years. Plus a lot of series have tried to emulate it but no-one have succeeded this far so we will never know if there will be another series that will get to GoT's level. You have to remember that GoT wasn't a huge hit it is today from the start, it just kept on building is fanbase over its course until eventually it grew huge.

I think it's because no one else really has good enough source material as GoT.....except for Dune.

But but middle earth surely has, The Witcher also does but Hobbit movies and Witcher didn't catch the craze. You also have to consider a remake/adaptation/reboot of older material at times can become irrelevant for current generation aka John Carter.

Wheel of Time has potential but I'm not optimistic they'll do it right.

Aaaaand with Matrix looking to gross less than 70m, this HBO Max saga has come to an end. Only 2 WB films will have grossed over 70m domestic. Lololol

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Dune was helped by the “this needs to be seen in theaters” narrative. Matrix had no such narrative. I expect the Samva TV numbers will be nice for it though. Could match Wonder Woman’s 3.03m households.

Matrix bombing makes Dune look really impressive. I'm sure WB will now prioritize the sequel even more.

As a box office fan, this experiment sucked.
As a movie fan it was nice to have. Staying up late to watch blockbusters reminded me of the good ole days. I wouldn't mind if they kept doing it for the smaller movies.

Honestly an unmitigated success for WB. Box office obviously took a huge hit, but they were clearly very aware of that going into the year.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Wow, what a failure... HBO & HBOmax added just 12.6m subscribers last year GLOBALLY...
Considering the massive production costs, rampant piracy, lukewarm box office and massive talent compensations this is probably one of the worst business ideas ever...

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Easily the worst decision ever. It was ok late 2020 when many markets theaters were closed. but from summer onwards it made no sense especially for big budget movies. Disney made the right call in moving to purely theatrical from Shang Chi onwards. Even before that it was only available for PVOD and not for free subscribers.
