Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
Awful drops but both DS and MK are fan driven so I guess let's see how it holds for the month.

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
Despite DS being #1, I'd say its drop is actually worse because unlike MK it wasn't legally available to stream and its weekdays were much stronger too...

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
TV continuations never have good legs in America, so Demon Slayer being able to move from #2 to #1 #1 is its own pretty incredible win IMO. Although it really speaks to how insanely frontloaded Mortal Kombat was. Guess that really was only a movie for the fans.
The Unholy's run has been kinda underrated. Five weekends in and not a single drop over 30%. Probably gonna have the best multipliers for a non-family film so far in this pandemic?

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
Large drop, though not exactly surprising given the genre and it being largely a fan-only release, but the fact that an anime film just topped the weekend box office in America is remarkable. First time since the original Pokémon film.
And I think it's only the second foreign-language foreign release to ever top the American weekend box office, too, after Hero.

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
I was hoping for more out of Demon Slayer after the strong weekdays, but it is to be expected. I'm sure its drawing some curious eyes, but you basically have to watch the 20+ episodes of the anime and I don't see too many new folks rushing through it before the "real" digital release in June.
Mortal Kombat might be a little ashamed of itself though. I think the drop would be about the same in normal times.

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
Why is piracy being brought again? Wasn't this already discussed to expect this kind of drop. Even looking back at Pokemon, Broly and other big anime openers all had similar drop when they opened on a Wednesday vs DS's Friday opening.
DS's strong weekdays inflated expectations but otherwise this drop is inline with regular anime movies.
MK's drop in this case is worse even though it was available on streaming though like most I believe that this is what it would have done in regular environment with an expected weaker WoM

Re: Weekend Estimates 18/21
I am curious. Doesn’t passion of the Christ qualify as a foreign release? Isn’t Icon an Australian company?

Mortal Kombat might be a little ashamed of itself though. I think the drop would be about the same in normal times. Self correcting after seeing the movie; you could walk in blind and still enjoy it. They spend a good chunk of the first act reintroducing the characters for the audience. One could see it then watch the series as a prequel and be fine. It is still a hard sell for general audience though.

These drops aren't too surprising to me.
Seems to be the on-going struggle for COVID-era releases with big OWs.

Checking Wiki, the film was produced by an American production Newmarket Films. There are many British (just last year The Father, TENET, etc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_films_of_2020) and Australian movies released in the cover of Hollywood movie. So Foreign movie is basically excluding all those.
