Toho delayed Goro Miyazaki's latest, which actually debuted on TV way back in December. After Black Widow was delayed a month ago, it left Golden Week without a big opener, so Toho scheduled Earwig there. None of the other openers have been delayed.

But since Sunday showed that the impact is much less than expected (obviously big, just not crippling), the delays for Crayon Shin-chan and Earwig probably weren't especially needed. But better safe than sorry given their younger appeal. Their delays will allow Detective Conan to benefit as well as the sole family-appealing film in release now, helping it counter some of the lost business from Tokyo and Osaka.

Probably should have figured many Tokyo residents would just travel the 30 minutes to the neighboring prefectures to shop (lots of theaters are in malls) and go to the movies during the SOE in Tokyo. Golden Week is the only week many get off, so they're not going to let the Tokyo SOE keep them from enjoying their very limited time off by escaping the stress by going to Disneyland (technically outside of Tokyo in the Chiba prefecture, so it's open still), the shopping malls, or to the movies.

Did they release final before begining?

Yeah, The Final is Part 1. The Beginning is Part 2 and concludes the 5-film series.

KnY earned approximately 9.5 Million USD on US in it's first friday.
Bruh, that's comparable to Japan's release of KnY's first friday. Though it's a bit low considering that it's in US. But it can't be helped since covid is having another wave right now.

Only if you're comparing it to mainstream American films, right? I'd compare it to other anime films. Anime doesn't bring in big box office revenues in US theaters, so it should only be expected to do well relative to that baseline.

Considering it is the highest opening ever for a Foreign Language Foreign Film in the US, I wouldn't call it "low".

If you haven't check the International thread, regarding the U.S. Opening Weekend:

Demon Slayer had the biggest OD for an anime film since the original Pokémon film in 1998, and the biggest OW for an anime film since the second Pokémon movie back in 2000. But assuming its OW comes in just $75,609 higher with actuals, then it'll also be the biggest OW for an anime film since the original Pokémon in 1998 too.

Its OW alone is higher than the totals of almost every anime film. I think just the first two Pokémon films and Dragon Ball Super: Broly have higher totals than Demon Slayer's OW. If it outgrosses the second Pokémon film at $43.76 million, then it'll become the second biggest anime film of all time in the U.S. behind the original Pokémon film.

And you could also say its OW is the biggest of all time for a foreign language film if you exclude The Passion of the Christ (an American production).

So... it's a massive success.

First two Pokemon movies were really BIG back in 1999. Its sad that the franchise went down so much after that.

No. No big films were scheduled this Golden Week after Black Widow got delayed. That film was only on a bit over 100 screens (160? or so I believe). The delay is likely due to be reliant on Tokyo. A lot of smaller releases, especially those with niche audiences, are dependent on Tokyo's business since they don't release too wide outside of Tokyo.

Good news for this past weekend: I underestimated all three films I'm tracking daily now.

Detective Conan came at ¥774 million ($7.2 million) on 549,000 admissions, bringing its 10-day total to a whopping ¥3.9 billion (~$36 million) on 2.74 million admissions. Its second weekend jumped 8 spots on the biggest second weekend list (just below Ponyo).

Rurouni Kenshin came in at ¥526 million ($4.9 million) over the weekend, and exceeded ¥700 million ($6.5 million+) over its first three days in release on over 500,000 admissions.

And Demon Slayer stands at ¥39.78 billion as of Sunday, slightly higher than estimated.

The rural prefectures are going to account for a significantly higher share of ticket sales until May 11th, so gotta up the estimates moving forward above their usual numbers. I'll have the Weekend Actuals and Charts Updated later this evening.

Back! I'll write a short review in the review thread later. In short: utofable did an excellent job adapting the source material, just as they did with season one of the anime. This arc worked very well in a 2-hour movie format.

And allow me to geek out a bit with these pictures I'm going to share. I've never been to this theater before, and it was by far the most "fancy" I've ever been to. It was a two-story theater (with elevators). I'm know they're not uncommon in cities due to space, but I've never seen one in-person before. And they had these awesome reclining, heated-seats. Again, probably not too exciting for most of you here, so forgive my geeking out.

Cool to see that theatre we don't get to see this in Singapore as well due to space constraints.

I think it's ink from the tickets that got on my wet fingers after washing my hands.

I collect ticket stubs, so the only negative about the theater is that the stubs are just thin-paper receipts basically that will probably wear away over time, not the cardboard stubs.



We switched to a different showing about an hour before our original showing started because it was filling up a bit too much for our liking. I usually like seeing a movie with a decent crowd, just not right now. The showing we switched to only had 3 other people (original showing was up to 22 people before we switched) and I couldn't gauge their reactions.

5 viewers of the movie= 5 Demon Slayers boarded the train (Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zennitsu, Inosuke, Rengoku). A perfect match

The AMC chain in my area will stop showing DS after this Thursday. I wonder if in your areas, the movie still has showtimes during this weekend or not.

Eh? I think it is because they didn't update the schedule yet. Cinema often extened the run for movie which still has demand. This movie did $13k per theater last weekend, how can they pull it out that fast?
