Yes, just saw the requests. Any commercial facility with more than 1,000 square meters of floor space in Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto are being requested to close from April 25-May 11th. This will include the vast majority of theaters in these prefectures.

I haven't seen any announcements by any theater chain for their locations in these prefectures yet, but I'm sure they'll follow the request (technically the government can't force any business to close in Japan), so Golden Week 2021 will be hugely impacted. Not as much as last year, as all theaters were closed at this time last year, but Tokyo alone makes up for almost 3/4 of all business in the country, and add in the others (especially Osaka), the box office is probably going to be down 80-90% from April 25-May 11th.

Cases aren't as high as last December/January, and are much lower relative to most of the world still, but with the variants now, they likely needed to implement this ahead of Golden Week. Especially with the Olympics quickly approaching. The quasi-states of emergencies (earlier closing hours, capacity limits, etc.) have always brought the cases way down in the past, so fingers crossed this far more strict SOE does the same.

So, for DS, 40billion is not 100% locked, right?

Just need to wait and see. This will of course make it more difficult.

It doesn't NEED to do ¥40 billion. It's not a mark of any sort of success. That's just the goal we've all set for it, and since it was approaching it, that Toho/Aniplex pushed for recently. Everything it's earned since the end of December has just been extra since it broke both the all-time records (revenue/admissions) almost four months ago.

Rurouni Kenshin Box-Office History:

Openings:
¥919.5 million ($8.7 million) / 717,948 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (2014)
¥592.2 million ($5.8 million) / 433,346 - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014)
¥399.5 million ($5.1 million) / 295,320 - Rurouni Kenshin (2012)

Totals:
¥5.22 billion ($50.0 million) / 4.04 million - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014)
¥4.35 billion ($40.6 million) / 3.38 million - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (2014)
¥3.01 billion ($38.3 million) / 2.42 million - Rurouni Kenshin (2012)

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final, part one of the two-part finale (part two opening in June), opened today to around ~¥190-200 million ($1.8/1.9 million) on 140,000 admissions or so based on my estimates. Very good Friday, suggesting an opening weekend easily above ¥500 million (maybe ¥600 million). Probably an opening similar to the second film, Kyoto Inferno.

I don't think its opening weekend will be too impacted since most of it occurs before many theaters close ahead of Golden Week (rather, fans *could* rush to see it on Saturday instead), but its total will be interesting/impossible to predict. Also, I'd expect Part 2 (Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning) to be delayed from June by a month or two in order to give Part 1 a little a more time (at least 6 weeks like planned) in theaters for fans to see it before Part 2.

The Rurouni Kenshin franchise has become Warner Bros.'s biggest film franchise in Japan since Harry Potter.

There were around 40/45 theaters not accounted for at the usual locations on Friday, likely due to them suspending reservations until the day-of sales, meaning they weren't calculated (added) by the program at the start of the day.

So I went back and adjusted Rurouni Kenshin's estimated opening day above upward a bit to account for them.

04/21 - Wed.: ¥190,000,000 ($1.76 million) / 143,000 *est.*

04/23 - Fri.: ¥165,000,000 ($1.53 million) / x115,000 *est.*

Cumulative 8-Day Total: ¥3,048,130,800 ($28.11 million) / 2,129,054 *est.*

One of the fastest films to ever hit ¥3 billion. This milestone isn't reported on as much as ones such as ¥5 billion (almost always reported on), but I made a rough chart for ¥3 billion (rough since it tends to occur more often during the weekdays, meaning it's hard to determine the exact day sometimes), and I think it's in the top 10 fastest films to reach the milestone.

Fastest Films to Reach ¥3 Billion (1998-):

3 days - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
6 or 7 days - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
6 or 7 days - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)*
6 or 7 days - Spirited Away (2001)
7 days - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021)
7 days - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)*
7 days - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
7 days - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
7 or 8 days - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
7 or 8 days - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)*
8 days - Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet (2021)
8 days - Toy Story 4 (2019)
8 days - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
8 days - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
8 or 9 days - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
8 or 9 days - The Da Vinci Code (2006)
9 days - Frozen II (2019)
9 days - Weathering With You (2019)
9 days - Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (2019)
9 days - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
9 days - Your Name. (2016)
9 days - Stand By Me, Doraemon (2014)
9 days - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
9 days - Rookies (2009)
9 days - Ponyo (2008)
9 days - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)

Note: * = includes previews (often days/week worth).

This list isn't as precise as the other Fastest To Lists (¥5 billion, ¥10 billion), as ¥3 billion isn't often reported and has to be manually calculated. Which is fine, and doable mostly, except this mark tends to be more commonly achieved during the middle of the week, so it has to be estimated unless it was clearly reached on Monday or Friday. If it's unknown, I put an OR (e.g. 7 OR 8 days) between the days the milestone as most likely achieved on.

I'm guessing this will probably impact pretty negatively in the run of all the recent openers, that's a bit of a shame. I don't expect this Conan to outgross its recent predecessors now.

And I wouldn't worry about KnY hitting 40B, I wouldn't be surprised if aniplex ends up pulling a small final giveaway in the event this causes it to miss. Even if they don't, it's not big deal, there isn't any particular significance in getting 40B other than just having that claim.

Will Toho have Conan lasting longer throughout the summer to make up for it? Especially since there are likely to be few new openers in such an environment.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry much about the long-term impact for the current films in release. They'll just be picked up again in the affected theaters once the SOE ends (currently planned for May 11th). Missing out on Golden Week hurts, obviously, as it's one of the few chances for a lot of people in Japan to get to visit theaters due to work/school, but those that really want to see Detective Conan, Rurouni Kenshin, or any other film are still likely to come back out in a few weeks.

OR, they could just travel to a different prefecture and see them there. But this should only really apply to the most adamant moviegoers as public transit (trains) are being impacted this time as well with shorter running hours.

Great info! How does RUROUNI KENSHIN: THE FINAL compare to the opening of SHIN GODZILLA or other live-action local titles? Just curious how this compares to some similar franchises.

And I still haven't seen any chains announce that their theaters in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo will be closing yet. Granted, the SOE was issued just yesterday (goes into effect in 2 days until May 11th) and they're probably just in the preparation stage right now, but so far they still have showings planned up through April 28th (but reservations have been suspended until the day-of sales).

Japan's government doesn't have the power to implement lockdowns or to force any business to close, so theaters *could* be weighing the option of remaining open during Golden Week too since it's one of their three biggest weeks of the year, and arguably the most profitable week for them since adults are more likely to come out during it versus New Year and Obon Week.

They've complied with the quasi-SOEs over the past year (shorter hours, capacity limits), and have worked well with local officials with guidelines and such, but this is the harshest request yet. I don't think they'll ignore the request, but if the money earned by remaining open during Golden Week is potentially greater than the fines they'd receive (the most the government can do), it could be an option. They'll definitely want compensation (which the government has given businesses in the past if their decisions impact business).

No one should expect this to happen, they'll almost certainly comply (with the promise of compensation), just that it's a possibility.

Even if they end up playing for longer to make up for it, it's still a loss in momentum and losing golden week is big imo. Obviously the core fanbase will still go see them, but casual watchers probably less than they would've otherwise. I think it'll damage their runs overall.

I'm going to hold off doing a forecast for this weekend since theaters in Tokyo and Osaka (the busiest regions) aren't allowing reservations until the day-of sales. It's like predicting in the dark without knowing how ~80%+ of the market is behaving ahead of time. Well, I *could* do it, but it'd be incredibly time-consuming to check out enough theaters the day-of to get a read on the individual films.

But looking at some of the theaters right now, they're still busy. Moviegoers are hitting them up immediately as tickets become available in the early morning hours. Detective Conan still has a lot of showings, and it's still seeing a lot of marked (at least 50% full) showings at many locations even with reservations going up the day-of sales. And Rurouni Kenshin also has a lot of showings (too bad we don't know how wide it is), and while it doesn't have as many marked showings as Conan, it still has a fair amount which is impressive given it's no doubt the widest film in the franchise to date.

And don't rely on the usual locations at the moment. At least wait until the mid-day point (2pm) to see if all (most) of the theaters are being included again. For one, reservations aren't available at the busiest locations until the day-of sales so pre-sales are naturally low, therefore tracking them isn't possible and the program can't count them before the start of day. And second, 40/45 theaters weren't counted yesterday due to this reason, and most of them are the busiest theaters in the country. So there's a lot of sales that are still happening, but the usual locations can't track or count them right now.

Also, none of the chains have announced any closures yet in the affected prefectures (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo).

Shin Godzilla opened on a Saturday, so can't compare them yet. Local films only began opening on Fridays since 2018. I'll let you know how its Saturday compare to Shin Godzilla though, and to the other Rurouni Kenshin films.

The theater chains announced very late (around 3/4pm today, or just 9 hours before Sunday sales began) that they'd be complying with the request to close their locations in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo from April 25th-May 11th.

Having waited so long for the theater chains to declare their position to accept the request or not, it's very likely they're one of the main reasons the prefecture governors of the affected prefectures requested additional daily compensation on Saturday on top of their previous amount for businesses in their areas. Daily compensation was set at ¥200,000 (about $2,000), but the affected theaters will be losing a lot more than that over Golden Week, so they'll be receiving a higher amount no doubt.

So today (Saturday) will be the last day of some bigger numbers for the next few weeks. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo account for I'd estimate 40% or so of all theaters in the country, but in terms of business, the four affected prefectures are probably close to double that (or at least 3/4ths). There are still some notable prefectures still open, like the neighboring Tokyo prefectures, but obviously numbers are going to see a big stall starting tomorrow.

As for Saturday, most films did very well.

Detective Conan more or less matched its predecessor at the usual locations on its second Saturday, so it most likely beat it overall like it did last weekend due to its higher theater count and higher ticket prices. So it was likely on track to score the biggest second weekend in the franchise. It'll still come in at perhaps ¥600 million or so over the weekend though despite the slow Sunday tomorrow.

Rurouni Kenshin also did great, coming in a strong second place. It was going to have the second biggest debut in the franchise, but Sunday will likely keep it from doing that now. However, it could still debut higher than the first film despite the setback it'll experience tomorrow.

I'll have estimates for both (and Demon Slayer) posted later today.

Very good news: Theaters closing in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo today (until May 11th) didn't have nearly as much of an impact on the box office as expected. A noticeable impact for sure, but the neighboring Tokyo prefectures (Saitama, Chiba, Kanawaga) really pulled their weight, as did the rural prefectures throughout the nation.

The neighboring Tokyo prefectures are all within a 30-minute train ride, so a lot of people are going to be traveling from Tokyo to them to do their shopping, enjoy the parks (Tokyo Disneyland is still open since it's actually located in Chiba), and yes, see movies, especially once Golden Week begins next week.

Sunday sales (after the SOEs) versus Saturday sales (before the SOEs):

-31% - Detective Conan. This is particularly good, and shows that the family appeal will help keep it going strong from its strength in the rural prefectures. And the fanbase in Tokyo will certainly take the time to plan a 30-minute train ride during the holidays to see it (Sunday already proves this a bit with this hold). And since Crayon Shin-chan was delayed, it's probably going to benefit over Golden Week a good deal since it's basically the only choice for families now.

-41% - Demon Slayer. Not bad. It'll be doing less than anticipated over Golden Week than hoped before the SOEs, but it's still going to be posting decent numbers, much better than expected without Tokyo, Osaka, etc.

-44% - Rurouni Kenshin. A bit of a harsh drop, but it's still better than 50%. Also, this number will improve after Sun. since Sat. had stage greetings which contributed to the drop-off.

-46% - Evangelion. One of the films most expected to see the biggest impact since it relies heavily on Tokyo. So without Tokyo for a few weeks, it'll hit a wall of sorts during the SOE. But dropping less than 50% without Tokyo (and Osaka) is still not too bad, honestly. The hardcore fans are certainly willing to take a 30-minute train to see it nearby.

And most everything else had Sunday drops of ~40% or so, some closer to 30%, others closer to 50%. Without Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo, the box office was expected to see a drop-off of over 50%, and perhaps as much as 60-70%. But it appears to be, on average, around 40% instead, which is pretty great (and could even improve when Golden Week begins).

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final - Daily Performance Tracker

4/23 - Fri.: ¥205 million ($1.90 million) / 145,000 *est.*
4/24 - Sat.: ¥305 million ($2.83 million) / 215,000 *est.*
4/25 - Sun.: ¥170 million ($1.58 million) / 120,000 *est.*

3-Day Cumulative Total: ¥680 million ($6.31 million) / 480,000 Admissions *est.*

This is the first Rurouni Kenshin film to open on a Friday, so can't compare the 3-day, but the 2-day opening weekend is ~20% higher than the first film, ~20% lower than the second film, and ~48% lower than the third film (the third film opened over a holiday period).

Sunday coming in stronger than expected without Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo is encouraging for the upcoming Golden Week holiday period, so a respectable total is still likely here. Initial goal should be ¥3 billion, but we'll see if that changes either downward or upward in the coming weeks.

This is part 1 of the finale, with part 2 releasing on June 4th. That seems way too soon, but part 1/part 2 films typically release 6 weeks or so apart. This actually happened with films 2 and 3 of this same franchise back in 2014, too.

Cumulative 10-Day Total: ¥3,773,130,800 ($34.83 million) / 2,630,054 Admissions *est.*

Again, much better Sunday than expected with theaters closed in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo. Its second weekend is about 20% lower than its predecessor, but its 10-day total is higher by about 5% based on estimates.

It will probably fall behind its predecessor later this week, or over Golden Week, but it's still going to be competitive. And once the stage greetings can be rescheduled after May 11th when the affected theaters reopen, and I wouldn't be surprised if they also decide on a giveaway event at some point too, I wouldn't rule out it still aiming to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise yet.

192-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,772,439,300 ($380.15 million) / 28,797,550 Admissions *est.*

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Sunday coming in above any of the prior weekdays without Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo is encouraging for the upcoming Golden Week period. If I had to guess, I'd say it'll be around ¥150 million away from ¥40 billion at the end of Golden Week (or the weekend after), so it only needs to average a little over ¥3 billion a day (or ¥20-25 billion a week) from that point on to reach ¥40 billion before the home video release. It's still pretty much certain to hit that milestone, and if it is barely short, they'll keep in enough theaters after the home video release to get it there considering it'll be ¥25/50 million or less most likely.
