Making this a separate post since it's pretty big: It's incredibly likely that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will achieve the second highest two-week total ever (behind Demon Slayer, of course) as long as it doesn't drop over 55% or something this weekend.

It's not a fair comparison since it has 5 extra days as part of its two-week total by opening on a Monday, but it's a pretty incredible accomplishment regardless. And besides, a lot of the early/mid-2000 Hollywood films had tons of previews added to their totals, so it's not alone in being a film with an "unfair" advantage.

There was another pretty big earthquake this evening, a M7.2 (or upper 5 on Japan's 7-scale) that might have slowed the box office a bit in the eastern/northeastern prefectures due to the tsunami alert this time. All the numbers look good, but perhaps could have come in slightly better.

No deaths or anything serious from the quake, aside from one injury reported so far. No structural damages have been reported either. This one did cause an initial tsunami warning that became a tsunami forecast, unlike the slightly bigger one last month.

Japan gets tons of earthquakes, many every day, common knowledge there, including M4/5 on a daily basis, but two coming in above 7m in the past 4 weeks is a little concerning. Last month's M7.3 was an aftershock of 2011's deadly M9.0 from this time ten years ago. And given how close tonight's was to the same location, it probably was too.

I can't imagine there's anyone really left that may see the news that it won and would suddenly want to check it out, nor do I think there's hardly anyone left on the fence to attract now either. We'll see, just don't expect any if it's not seen in the next day or two.

Regarding next week, it's important to see how much it expands by and how many seats/showings it gets. It'll surely receive a big increase, it's just that Evangelion is holding well enough to where it will still command a good portion of seating/showtimes, plus Monster Hunter opens next week. Monster Hunter is one of the biggest brands in Japan, but Hollywood adaptations of domestic material almost always bombs or disappoints. I wouldn't expect big things for Monster Hunter, but theaters could still give it substantial seating/showings for its first week based on name alone. The next Monster Hunter game (and first on the Switch) also releases the same-day as the movie, so that could possibly spark some interest too...or have the opposite effect if fans spend the weekend/week at home playing the game versus checking the movie out.

Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures are lifting their restrictions tomorrow, so that'll help a ton for everything to receive ample seating/showings over Spring Break. Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures account for around 75% of the entire business the box office sees.

A surprisingly pretty weak weekend.

Perhaps a bit weaker than expected, but it depends on how you look at it.

All the openers exceeded (Hazardous Wife, Tom & Jerry) or met (Precure, Minari) expectations. The holdovers were where some of the weakness occurred.

Saturday's earthquake, one week after the ten year anniversary of the Great Tohoku Quake, may have dampened things a bit too. No deaths or damage, but it did trigger the tsunami alerts which is a big deal as few do that. Plus Spring Break is days away now, and some audiences choose to wait for the holidays (breaks in particular) if they're coming up soon.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time achieved the second highest two-week total in history, earning ¥4,934,996,800 ($45.3 million) and selling 3,222,873 admissions after its fourteenth-day in release. Its second weekend fell below ¥700 million, but it didn't need to even get there to accomplish this feat. Again, this is due to it opening on a Monday and having five extra days in release, so it's not in direct comparison, but it's still very impressive.

It's only ¥400 million away from outcrossing its predecessor to become the highest grossing film in the franchise, which it'll do on either Thursday or Friday this week before even its twentieth day in release.

It'll exceed ¥5 billion on Monday, its fifteenth-day, tying it with several films as the thirteenth fastest film to reach the blockbuster milestone. I'll have this chart posted shortly.

The release date strategy was good in the end for Evangelion with this weekend having a good boost. The total is very respectable, makes me wonder if it will slow down or keep having regular legs for another weekend or two.

Godzilla vs. Kong opens May 14th. Toho has the rights to it in Japan.

Monster Hunter opens this weekend and will be interesting to watch. Not expecting too much from it though since Hollywood adaptations of domestic material have a very bad track record. But it's a huge brand in Japan of course, and with the release of the new video game on the same-day as the movie, in addition to it being the start of Spring Break, it could perform decently well. It has a very long history of Hollywood bombs/disappointments preceding it, but it'll be one to keep an eye on.

And the seating/showing allocation will be interesting this weekend. Demon Slayer is getting its Dolby Cinema expansion, in addition to its one-week only giveaway event, so it'll surely receive a big bump in seats/showings. Evangelion is still doing very well though and will demand a certain amount of seats/showings. And then there's Monster Hunter to throw into the mix that could receive ample seating/showings just on its brand name.

And speaking of Godzilla vs. Kong...

A few things before I begin to work on this week's Actuals and Chart Updates:

First, regarding this weekend's box office:

The weekend wasn't as strong as expected as a whole, however, all the openers performed well by either meeting or even exceeding expectations. Some of the holdovers dropped heavier than expected considering Saturday was a holiday (although Sat. holidays have minimal impact) but also a Movix Cinema Day. However, I just read that some theaters in the affected prefectures/cities (Miyagi) of Saturday's earthquake closed early. There were no deaths or structural damage reported, but a tsunami warning (which Sat's quake initially caused) is no joke and theaters took the necessary precautions. So some of the weekend declines can be attributed to this situation.

Second, regarding the restrictions that had been in place in a few prefectures (Tokyo namely) since early January:

Restrictions were fully lifted in Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures on the 21st. Therefore, theaters in these four prefectures can go back to regular operating hours, but it's not going to be all at once and it will vary by chain and by city. Toho Cinemas is the main chain to focus on since they're the busiest chain, so I'll go over what they plan to do with their locations in the targeted prefectures this week:

1. Their theaters are still going to close earlier than usual for the time being, but at 9PM instead of 8PM. This will allow an extra showtime for most films each day this week. The final screening time will vary by location and is subject-to-change depending #2.
2. They're going to be slow in releasing the schedule for this weekend since they're working out details with the local health officials. And the current hours/showtimes on the schedule, March 22-25th, are subject-to-change based on the requests if incorporated.

They're probably being careful in both increasing showings/capacity, but also to keep attendance somewhat still limited (especially late-night) for another week or two since Spring Break is about to begin, and it being one of the busiest weeks (fourth overall) of the year. Unless something would change between now and mid-April, I'd expect them to be fully operational again in a few weeks.

Looking at the theaters that have posted their schedules for this weekend and into the beginning of Spring Break next week, they're doing a very good job at allocating the necessary seating and showtimes across the board.

The big 3 (Monster Hunter, Evangelion, and Demon Slayer) are largely splitting everything, from sharing the largest screens at various locations, to also splitting the 4DX screens.

Evangelion is taking a bit of a hit of course since it's had all the largest screens to itself and has to share them with Monster Hunter and an expanding Demon Slayer, but it still has plenty to thrive on.

Monster Hunter is also getting plenty of showings for its debut, including a good share of the largest screen or two and 4DX showings, so as long as it can draw in just a small portion of the franchise's large fanbase, theaters have given it the opportunity to do very well.

Demon Slayer is receiving a significant jump in seating and showtimes, going back on one of the largest screens at every location and getting 4-5 showtimes on it, in addition to having another screen or two with a few more showtimes and more 4DX showings. For the past two weeks, it had been only been playing on one or two small or medium-sized screens with just 2 or 3 showtimes, so the increase is going to be significant. Its seating/showtimes is going to be the highest they've been since New Year back in January.

I really don't know what to expect this weekend for Demon Slayer. Will he be back in the top 5 ? Is he going to have a simple raise or a big raise ? Are the fans going to be there ? We will see all this but I hope for the best and if we can reach a weekend at ¥200mn it would already be extraordinary.

Well... you will be happy. No one knows what will happen, but it's going much higher than just ¥200 million.

I imagine it'll be a three-way race for #1 between Evangelion, Monster Hunter, and Demon Slayer. Very early, but I'm thinking that ~¥400-500 million is going to be the battleground territory.

I'll expand this a few more weekends next week. And the Biggest 24th (and 25th) Weekend list is going to look incredibly lopsided soon as Demon Slayer is about to wreck them. I'm prepared to wager that no film anywhere in the world will have achieved bigger 24th and 25th weekends than Demon Slayer is about to have.

Demon Slayer has also expanded its lead over Spirited Away above ¥10 billion now (had been either just short or right at that mark for the past month or two), and with it about to get a significant jump over the next two weeks, that lead is going to grow and grow. ¥40 billion is locked up, and ¥41 billion is looking very likely. I'm thinking that ~¥42 billion ($390 million) is probably going to become the new target soon.

I've looked a bit and it looks like some of the leggiest US movies managed something similar when those weekends fell on holidays or where accompanied by huge expansions. ET The extraterrestrial had a $4.1m 25th weekend (which fell on thanksgiving), Titanic had a $3.7m 23rd weekend (thanks to it falling on Memorial day) and Avatar achieved a $4m 37th weekend (though that might really be considered a re-release since it was playing on just one screen the week prior). And My Big fat greek wedding had a $9.4m 24th weekend

Though when you adjust for market size, ET is the only one as impressive.
