Wow. Good catch. I'm surprised neither me or anyone else has ever mentioned it missing over the years of me posting the All-Time Opening Weekend charts.

It's been included now!

Corpse, do you think that after June 16 Demon Slayer will continue to bring in some more money for the summer or his run will end at that point ?

It'll largely end. I'm sure it'll be in a few locations, as I don't think fully pulling the biggest film of all-time will be like flipping a switch, but for the most part the home video release is the end of the run.

>Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time kicks the Spring box-office season off with a record start, setting a NEW March Opening Weekend Record, a record that hasn't been broken in 15-years! What's even more impressive is that due to multiple scheduling delays, it was decided to release the film on March 8th, last Monday, yet it claimed the March OW record and opened 4% higher than its predecessor. This strategy and first seven days couldn't have gone any better.

The final film of the franchise sold a very impressive 760,882 admissions over the weekend frame across 466 screens, and over its first seven-days in release, reached a whopping 2,194,533 admissions. It will begin to slow down, likely sooner rather than later, but the hype surrounding its debut, as well as the finale factor, could result in a higher than expected finish. As it stands, assuming it slows down now, I think the goal (besides outgrossing its predecessor's 5.33 billion to become the #1 film in the franchise) is ¥7 billion (~$65 million) and 4.5 million admissions.

>Brave: Gunjyo Senki enjoyed a fair debut in second place, selling 111,000 admissions over the weekend on 333 screens, and sold 156,687 admissions over its first three-days in release. I don't think this is quite good enough to get it to ¥1 billion ($10 million), but a lucrative Spring Break period could help it get there.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet achieved a major milestone this weekend--becoming Tokyo Theater, Co.'s highest grossing film ever! The WOM hit surpassed In This Corner of the World to become the distributor's top grossing film, and is far from finished. It's going to exceed ¥3 billion in just a couple days, and is easily on track to reach ¥3.5 billion (~$33 million) at least. And depending on how it performs over Spring Break, I wouldn't even rule out ¥4 billion (~$38 million) with how incredibly well it's been performing since day one.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train slipped to fourth place after reclaiming the #1 spot in its 21st weekend last week, dropping a pretty heavy 47%, largely from the loss of its 4DX showings. The drop was closer to 35% in admissions though, clearly an indication audiences haven't had enough of this one just yet. And Aniplex/ufotable are responding once again to the demand, having just announced two more giveaway events (on March 27th and April 3rd) to thank moviegoers. Also, fans will get to reexperience the film once again if they choose at Dolby Cinema locations when it opens there on March 27th as well. This is usually the time when even the leggiest of films begin to exit the stage, but Demon Slayer is far from finished.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi broke the ¥1 billion milestone over its fifth-weekend of release, becoming the first compilation film to ever accomplish this feat. Expect big, big things when the next film, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, opens next month (spoiler: Evangelion won't hold the biggest OW of 2021 for long).

>Raya and the Last Dragon held decently, but if it was going to recuperate from its awful opening weekend, it needed to do much, much better than this. It's likely going to stall out around ¥250 million ($2.5 million). The market is open for Disney to return to the box office proper, without a same-day Disney+ release and higher asking prices to show their films (this weekend is further proof Toho Cinemas and others aren't going to go along with that and will refuse to play them), so hopefully having the title of Biggest Bomb Ever under their banner will make them think twice with their future films.

Demon Slayer has therefore reached 28M admissions. Corpse what is your final DS prediction with the good news we learned today. Already I want to say that if the 2 million gifts flow the 30 million admissions will be reached but that would mean what ? A final around 30M-31M admissions and something around ¥40Bn- ¥41Bn?

;)

Prediction remains the same. I honestly think it would have gotten there without all the news from today, it just would have taken a couple more months to get there before ending its run. But now, we'll know pretty soon if it exceeds these milestones since the fifth and sixth giveaways, and Dolby Cinema expansion, all happen soon and closely together (March 27th and April 3rd).

¥41 billion (~$390 million) and ~31 million admissions is probably the "end" target, but we'll really only know when June 16th arrives. I wouldn't be completely shocked if they have a final event ready come June to send it off on. And SURELY the rest of the world can muster enough to get it above $500 million worldwide now. They've just shaved off possibly $20 million more in Japan with these announcements.

Ok nice but I think 31M admissions is more something like ¥42 billion ($405M) no ?
$400M would be just incredible but it seems difficult to reach that, but with this movie never say never.

Damn this DVD release it would have reached 45B with a few more months though it does not make sense at this point. I still believe with 4DX shows for another 4-5 weeks it could have reached 45B with those increases it saw last few weeks.

151-Day Cumulative Total: ¥38,630,613,550 ($369.68 million) / 28,015,875 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

NOTE: I underestimated last week's weekdays by a good bit (¥15 million ($0.14 million) and 14,000 admissions) so they've been readjusted upwards (sharing the difference evenly). Last week, I adjusted the numbers down to account for the loss of 4dx shows, but took off too much from its avg. ticket price. Plus it wasn't hit as hard as it appeared since the share at rural locations went up significantly as business there was unchanged since they had no 4dx shows to lose and are open past 8pm.

This week's weekday estimates should be much closer since they can be compared directed to last week, just keep in mind it may take another week to pinpoint them again.

Corpse do you really think these 2 million gifts will bring in another 2 million admissions ? I was thinking and I said to myself even if I think they know what they are doing I would say it's 50/50 it's risky to want to bring in another 2 million people when you reach almost 25 weeks of operations. And if they manage to make another 2 million admissions do you think those 2 millions admissions will be spread over the 2 weeks of giveaways or will it take more or less time ?

2 million gifts = 2 million admissions, so yep. You can only get them with a ticket purchase.

The first giveaway (5th overall), the stamp sticker sheet, will only be available from March 27th to April 2nd with a limited print-run of just 1 million copies. And theaters will be restricting them to one gift per person so that a fair portion of the fanbase have a chance of getting a copy if they come out early.

The second giveaway (6th overall), a set of two A6 illustration cards (similar in style to the first four giveaways), will begin on April 3rd and don't have deadline set on them. These will also have a limited print-run of just 1 million copies and will be limited to one gift per person to allow a fair chance for fans to receive a copy if they come out early enough.

So the first one needs to sellout in a week or it's gone, so you can expect fans (and scalpers) to hit the theaters hard between March 27th-April 2nd. Restrictions will be lifted in Tokyo by then (22nd is expected, with an announcement to come on the 18th). So this will allow theaters to fully book it again in anticipation of the giveaway. It's also Spring Break week, in addition to being the first week of the Dolby Cinema expansion. A lot happening that week. There should be little doubt that they'll sell through all of the these in that week.

The second one doesn't have a deadline nor is happening over a holiday week, so selling through the 1 million of them will probably take longer, but they'll no doubt sell out at some point, but will be a bit more spread out versus the first giveaway.

And remember, it's not trying to find 2 million more people. It's going to largely be 1 million people who have already watched it multiple times in order to receive the giveaways coming back for more giveaways and to see it in a new format (Dolby). And there are well more than 1 million diehards out there.

Yes it's just getting 1m people to see the movie twice before it leaves theaters. It should be manageable.

It'll gradually regain seating and showings leading up to March 27th, where it'll probably end up playing as wide as it was back in January for a couple of weeks. A pretty big jump in seating/showings should occur on March 22nd as well when restrictions are lifted in Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures to allow evening/night shows again.

They work this out well. Evangelion is likely to burn out pretty quick (though perhaps not as quick as its predecessor), so giving it priority for a couple weeks obviously makes sense. Demon Slayer will get priority over Spring Break from March 27th until at least April 4th. And then both it and Evangelion are likely to share things for a few weeks before Detective Conan and Rurouni Kenshin phase them out starting in late-April.

Without Hollywood releasing anything significant (and Disney being rebuked by Toho and Movix Cinemas), theaters are able to accommodate and work with local films a lot easier to allow about everything to thrive at different points. Especially Toho Cinemas since Toho (top distributor in the market) owns the chain.

Getting 4DX screens will help DS's weekdays immensely.

Most likely because Disney is pushing their releases on D+ like they did with Raya.

To expand on Sparrow,

Note that there isn't any official statements, however:

It very likely began last year when Disney decided not to release Mulan or Soul in theaters, instead deciding to release them on Disney+. And with Raya and the Last Dragon last weekend, they did release in theaters but they also decided to release it same-day on Disney+, and it's likely that was met with disapproval. And there is speculation that Disney was also requesting a higher than normal price (or share) from theaters to show Raya, which was also an issue with Cinemark opting not to play it in the U.S..

So, Toho Cinemas (busiest chain in the market) and Movix Cinemas (third or fourth busiest chain), in addition to a dozen or so other theaters (smaller chains or independent locations) decided not to play Raya in response.

Wonder how far I'll need to travel to see it. Doubt my local theater will (or can) get it. And Regal Cinemas operates most cinemas that could get it within an hour or so of me, but they're still closed to my knowledge. Hopefully they reopen soon.

I'll be willing to drive up to 2.5/3 hours. Maybe with fewer releases coming out right now though, they'll be able to get it out wider than usual.
