Note: Spirited Away is estimated in Weeks 23-24. Annoyingly no weekend figures are available from Weeks 23-31. It fell outside the top 10 in its 25th week, but resurfaced again in its 32nd week following its Oscar win, and remained there through its 37th week. I estimated its 23rd and 24th weeks based on its weekend ranking (which is available) and any known grosses of the films in the top 10 at that time.

Note 2: Tracking ended for Howl's Moving Castle in its 23rd weekend and for Frozen and Bohemian Rhapsody in their 24th weekends, respectively. Howl would, months later, receive an expansion around June 2005, I believe, to help get it to its final total of ¥19.6 billion. And Bohemian Rhapsody would continue to play in limited released for many, many more months to reach ¥13.11 billion.

Very nice news for Gintama.
Now I'm hoping for it to show in my area's theaters so I could at least add up to it's worldwide grossing lmao

One goal for DS can be to take the first place at 23rd and/or 24th weekends but it has to greatly hold its performances.

Actually it's a really impressive another weekend after such a long time... We're following a curious and interesting part of Japan's history.

And I thought this weekend was even supposed to be deflated a little due to First Day being on Monday.

Yeah very good numbers in Australia and New Zealand. In fact just the opening weekend is bigger than the full runs of every anime release in the past years.
It could end up as the highest grosser anime film in both territories.

Very nice. I remember some of our members saying that it was popular in Australia, so good to see it delivering.

Given that last Monday's pre holiday boost was higher I was expecting a bigger Monday :P

Another weekend, another weekend with stellar results almost across the board.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet repeats for a fifth-consecutive weekend, selling an additional 127.993 admissions, bringing its five week total up to 1,673,431. Its fifth weekend is only down 12% versus its opening weekend, and it has already achieved a multiplier above 11. Given its strength, it's difficult to project a finish right now, but I think we can expect a total close to or maybe even above ¥3 billion (~$30 million), which will make it Tokyo Theater Co.'s highest-grossing film ever.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train managed a second consecutive weekend increase, following its impressive 25% jump last week, selling another 100,000 in its twentieth weekend of release. This is the second highest 20th weekend on record, beyond only Your Name.. Its 20 week admissions have now reached 27,688,343. Its weekly earnings have remained practically flat for the last 5/6 weeks. Clearly the #1 film of all time still has plenty left in its tank, so expect to see it in the top 10 for several more months. An eventual total over ¥40 billion (~$385 million) and possibly 30 million admissions looks more likely every week.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi is proving that extending its run was clearly the right call, as it's set to become the first ever compilation film to ever reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone. Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet is only seven weeks away now.

>Gintama: The Final delivered a great increase, and surpassed 2013's Gintama: The Final Chapter to become the highest grossing film of the Gintama animated film franchise. ¥2 billion might be out of reach, but don't rule it out quite yet.

>Pokémon: Coco resurface back into the Top 10, which is very fitting and appropriate since Saturday was Pokémon Day and the franchise's 25th Anniversary.

>And outside of the top 10 now, New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms is on the cusp of exceeding the ¥4 billion milestone. And The Promised Neverland is about to exceed the ¥2 billion milestone. Look for their updated totals in the 2021 Charts below this post here very shortly.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Opening Weekends: 2021
No entries this week, but not too surprising since the last weekend of February rarely has anything too interesting opening over it. Studios strongly favor a release in March to take advantage of Spring Break during the final week of the month, and then the Golden Week holiday period in late-April and early-May.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (02/27-28); Charts Upd
The incredible stability continues for a sixth week now (especially so since 4 weeks ago).

Approximately: This Tuesday is only down 30% versus 6 weeks ago; 22% versus 5 weeks ago; 12% versus 4 weeks ago; flat versus 3 weeks ago; and 12% versus 2 weeks ago. Last Tuesday was a holiday, so can't compare them.

All the weekdays (and weekends, too, really) have been like this since mid-January (Jan. 18th-present). Excluding holidays and discount days, the weekdays have ranged between 15,000-20,000 admissions (Wed. can get up to ~25,000) since mid-January, while Saturdays and Sundays have ranged from 40,000-55,000. Give or take a thousand or so here and there.

As expected, the disappearance of the night showings only make the legs better and better....
So, starting from Monday next week, all the night showings will comeback again?

6 of the 10 affected prefectures had their restrictions lifted a week early (this past Monday), and the remaining 4 will be lifted next Monday. Evening and night showings will resume nationwide next week. And the final Evangelion is taking immediate advantage of this by opening next Monday, possibly 1-minute after restrictions are lifted if it gets midnights in Tokyo on Sunday going into Monday.

It'll be interesting to see how it'll impact the box office. The restrictions clearly had a positive impact in terms of holds and stability (for almost everything), so will resuming regular hours of operation cause everything to begin having normal declines starting next week? We'll have to wait and see.

The weekdays for DS indeed have been great. Weekends just started to look great because of the announcement but weekdays for DS have been amazing.

Yeah very good numbers in Australia and New Zealand. In fact just the opening weekend is bigger than the full runs of every anime release in the past years.
It could end up as the highest grosser anime film in both territories.

It's a good result, but it won't be making as much as Pokemon: The First Movie, which opened to just over $2m, and finished around $7.5m, in 1999/2000. But it will still be the biggest anime film since then.

Koyoharu Gotouge has won the New Artist Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology thanks to their work, Kimetsu no Yaiba.
"Kimetsu no Yaiba has achieved exceptional manga sales and a new record in terms of movie box office revenue. A story of a gentle hero along with his devoted companions overcoming unreasonable despair burned in the hearts of people living during difficult times. ..Embodying the motto of "Friendship, Effort and Victory" of Weekly Shonen Jump, this work has become a social phenomenon in both manga and anime and has the depth and appropriate presentness for the history of the Media Arts Field.....We give this prize with respect and encouragement to Koyoharu Gotouge, whose next work is expected more than anyone else's".

Koyoharu Gotouge keeps on winning. Congrats.

And their next work will indeed be something to watch. I don't think there's ever been (or will be when the time comes) more anticipation for a mangaka's next work. I think I read a few months back that they were interested in their next work being a sci-fi romantic-comedy.
