The Croods: A New Age
The sequel to a Dreamworks family film that did $187M Domestic/$587M WW in 2013 is about to test the waters. The trailers look on brand but are families willing to return en masse to theaters? Could we see films distributed by Fox/Disney but not produced by them appear on Disney+? Will its success or failure even impact other studios decisions?

I’m sure it will do as well as theater closures and restrictions allow it to.

This will be a good test for families. These movies have been doing really well in VOD so maybe Croods can finally "save the theaters" lol. Ironically its stone-age themes are very much relevant now

Re: The Croods: A New Age
All good points. I just want to see how a major film that is nothing like Tenet performs before passing judgement on the state of the boxoffice in the 2nd half of 2020. Good article on Croods 2. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/16/univers ... iving.htmlQuote: ....the studio could use "The Croods 2" as a way to test out its new deal with theater chain AMC.
By releasing the second "Croods" film on Thanksgiving, Universal would theoretically be able to bring the film to the home market just ahead of the holidays.

Smart move. They can release it in theaters to make nice with AMC then still charge $20 for a rental 3 weeks later. Will likely be the way going forward.

It is the same case with straight to PVOD here when you know you can wait for a few weeks to enjoy the movie over holidays with your entire family at the dock of a button why would you rush to theaters for a movie like Croods that has been long delayed, the marketing just started and does not have a rabid fanbase.

Good point and I’m sure Universal is aware of such a family’s rationale but they have no choice but to start with a theatrical release per the AMC agreement. There will be families who go see it in theaters precisely because it’s a fun activity to do outside of the house.

Re: The Croods: A New Age
So it’s up in the air whether theaters will be open still by next Thursday, but I see a stronger PTA for this than for Tenet TBH. I think the holiday release will help it, as there’s a huge group of people that go to the movies every thanksgiving and are gonna be tempted despite the pandemic.

It's still releasing here on 26-November. The pre-sales just opened abd they aren't looking very big as of now but I expect them to pick up by next week.

Controlling for the pandemic, top 2 in its 10th week aint bad. It's at $45+ mil which is decent with all things considered.

Re: The Croods: A New Age
The Croods: A New Age joins Home Alone, Tootsie, Beverly Hills Cop, Titanic, and ET as the only film to land at #1 in its 12th weekend.

Re: The Croods: A New Age
Croods 2 is charting in the Top 20 in its 30th weekend. Lol https://www.boxofficepro.com/weekend-bo ... ce-part-2/Without context and just looking at the rankings over time, Croods 2 would have one the best all time boxoffice runs. Haha

Re: The Croods: A New Age
And it also surpasses Tenet from the time of release when theatrical releases were limited to only a few movies a month.
