Especially for those whose hobby is screenwriting and movies You guys have no idea how many movie recommendations I could start dropping on you for films you've never seen. I'm tempted to do that, just so you'll see how big a fan I actually am. I could list a whole generation of classics that many of the younger people here are clueless about. I won't push any, though, but I do have an upcoming top 100 favorites in the Cinemania thread that are all movies I strongly recommend.
Give me here some recommendations for a couple of movies you are SURE I haven't seen

Haha. If you see Moulin Rouge (My favorite film of all time  ) Mav, I'll be sure to look on to some of your picks on your best of list. I'd also highly recommend American Beauty and Pleasantville as well.

Thank you, Libs, appreciated as always.
@Lecter,...No, I wasn't living on the moon, but considering what was about to come up very shortly after American Beauty was released, I wish I would have been.

American Beauty - A
Being John Malkovich - B+
Cold Mountain - A-
Drop Dead Gorgeous - B
Erin Brockovich - B
Good Will Hunting - D (hate it)
Life Is Beautiful - A-
Moulin Rouge - B+

The best are by far and away American Beauty and Pleasantville, followed by Life is Beautiful and Cold Mountain.

I'm really not sure Mav would much like Cold Mountain. Meh.
Don't listen to Lecter about Traffic, Mav. Heh. *Second* best movie of 2000.

She really does have great taste, and she is worth considering any recommendation from. I don't even question it anymore, because I've enjoyed them all, and only found one a bit underwhelming.

Cold Mountain was one of the best 2003 movies and far superior to Master & Commander nominated for Best Picture in the same year. It's a shame it was snubbed for Best Picture. I think Mav will like it, even though maybe not as much as some other ones. My bet is on Mav liking American Beauty the most.
Actually, Traffic is overrated. Not a bad movie, but not a masterpiece either. Gladiator's win was a well-deserved one

I'm a little curious why she doesn't think I would like Cold Mountain, but as far as the Traffic opinions, sorry Lecter, she outranks you.

Cold Mountain is a long, "romantic" yarn that might test your patience.
It's from the director of The English Patient. I didn't like that movie but (obviously) loved Cold Mountain, I'm just not sure if you'd really like it.
Renee Zellweger did win an Oscar for her performance in it, though, so perhaps you might want to see it to check her out.

The English Patient was a bore. The same director also made Talented Mr. Ripley which was quite a good movie, but Cold Mountain is the best thus far.

Thank you, Libs. I'll just not make that one a priority, and save it for when I don't have better things lined up to watch.

One of a few great movies that had a horrible trailer. Definitely the best movie of 2000. Should've won more than just Original Screenplay at the Oscars.

It looks like this thread is 90 percent not about this movie. Anyway, besides a terrible performance from the young writer character, a second half that drags like a mug and a few other minor things, I really liked it.

I really liked this movie. I fail to see how it was passed over for Picture by the likes of Chocolat, but whatever. The acting is good, but Hudson's performance was a little overrated I think. McDormand was better than she was and Harden was vastly superior to both. I'm not srue whether I would rate this above Jerry Maguire, but it was indeed excellent.

Re: Almost Famous
Yeah, not an oscar worthy film in any sense, including Hudson's performance, although it is probably the high point of her career. I liked the music critic angle more than the coming of age love story, got a bit generic and dragging near the end. Still a well made and effective and engaging film. I laughed some, it was pleasant.

Re: Almost Famous
Fairly impressed by this movie, despite a rather overrated performance from Kate Hudson (were they lacking in nominees that year?). It suffers from being a little too glossy and easy-to-digest at times, though I know it's from Crowe's own experiences. Still an enjoyable film, though I expected it to be an instant favorite and it's honestly not.

Nice to see the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em appearances from Jay Baruchel, Eric Stonestreet and Rainn Wilson. Weird seeing a completely out-of-his-element Jimmy Fallon.
