RIP movie theaters. But at least Dune will not get delayed anymore. HBO Max better update their app to stream in 4K though. Edit: Patty Jenkins has already announced WW1984 will be the first thing to stream in 4K in HBO history. D&D are probably wondering if they can get another crack at The Long Night now.

Idk... this may be a good idea for 2021 but there is no way they can make the same profit just on HBO Max as a theatrical release. If The Batman is released on HBO Max in 2022 then yeah, it's over.

I hope this is to avoid constantly delaying release dates. I really miss going to the theater. Who wants to stay home all the time?

They're claiming this is just for 2021, but obviously no one actually believes that.
What studio is next?

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
They're doing simultaneous releases like WW1984. Honestly the only ones I'll probably go to the theater still are Suicide Squad, Dune and probably Matrix.
The whole, put it on HBO Max for 31 days and then let it be exclusive theatrical makes no sense, like... if they didn't want to kill theaters it should have been the other way around.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
Also, everyone is so worried about the economy, if theaters remain open doesn't that create jobs? Take the number of theaters * employees, what does that number come to? I remember a multiplex by me opened up the weekend Pirates 3 and Shrek 3 were released, and every show the entire weekend was sold out. Maybe something like that happens. Some big release goes into theater to jump start everything back.

I do wonder if WB is thinking to not expand HBO Max since the press release only talks about US...

This is a sad news. WB should not have done the exclusive to HBO Max first then theaters they should have done the other way around.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
D+ also has the #1 show in the world right now. With all the Marvel and Star Wars shows they should have more than enough content even without Black Widow. If they start putting MCU movies up for free then it is game over.
This is a huge deal but it also might not be happening if HBO Max had been more successful. Without Thrones they just don’t have an App Seller thus the need for something crazy like this.

AMC will fill bankruptcy soon Regal/Cinemark might do it even quicker. I'm under the impression AMC is doing better than the others, but maybe I'm way off. They're all screwed, regardless. I don't feel bad for mega corporations or the top level executives at those corporations. I do feel bad for their regular employees at the ground level, and I feel bad for any well-run independent or small theater.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
1) people will still go see them on the big screen.
2) This is moreso to combat their PATHETIC performance with release date scheduling no doubt.
3) They are also taking major heat for this. May likely scare of others.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
People who are die-hard theater fans will go see movies on big screen but I highly doubt we will see the rush factor for movies that we used to see in the past.

Beyond some journalists and creatives on Twitter I don't think the backlash is that significant. And even if it was, I don't think AT&T would give a damn.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
You will still be able to see WB films in theaters under this model. Most will stay at home though and this policy could help rewire the perception of the theater experience.
Reasons for optimism:
1. people in 2022 and beyond will still go out 2. this pandemic period will ‘only’ have been 12-18 months and folks will still remember the appeal of big budget films on the big screen.

Re: WB puts whole 2021 slate on HBO Max
The major studios often don’t finance the production themselves, they distribute the finished product. In those cases I wonder how the production companies who actually make the film will recoup their investment.

ZERO chance that WB do not reverse course in the very near point. This is an unmitigated disaster. There will without question need to be personnel changes at the c-level if they want to save some face

Given the COVID situation I think WB will carry out with this plan for 2021.

Nolan is their biggest name so openly calling them out will have an impact. They're about to be legit boycotted.
