Movie was better than expected, and i think the simplicity really helped the film overall.

Re: Oblivion
Yeah, I thought this was good, especially going in with low expectations.
Still everything about it was predictable, which is not always a bad thing, but here, it kinda was.

Re: Oblivion
Great story idea, great futuristic sci-fi look - - but Oblivion has a screenplay like a flat tire.
Tom Cruise is fine enough, but the director and script force him to get a little broad here. Morgan Freeman has a surprisingly small part. The women were solid.
I can't really complain to much while getting to see this rare big production sc-fi movie - - but Oblivion should have been cut by 30 minutes to it's benefit - - and put into the hands of a competent writer-director.
4 out of 5.

Re: Oblivion
Probably this years Cowboys And Aliens, great idea, confident stars, action, and sci fi elements, but the story is just slight.

Re: Oblivion
Same feelings as I had with Tron Legacy. It's great to hear and look at -the production and soundtrack were top-notch (it seemed more expensive than 120m), but the story/characters lacked an emotional punch and the concept wasn't strikingly original. Overall, the visual and musical experience still had me very satisfied with the film.

Re: Oblivion
This is a decent and entertaining film. This is also a frustrating film. As a visual experience, its entire gargantuan budget is visible before the audience. The blue and grey vision of our planet laid to waste is beautiful and melancholy. The storyline in of and itself has several interesting components (even if they are lifted from other films, including Moon and Twelve Monkeys) and touches upon a number of fundamental human themes and topics: the importance of art and literature, the question of the existence of free will, enduring love, the mystery of memory and nostalgia, etc. And Tom Cruise is as ever in fine form, energetic and focused from frame one onward, a trouper among troupers. Yet the enterprise is flawed. It moves in stops and starts. Moments which should prove heart-wrenching play too mildly. Interesting characters and avenues are often ignored, including the rebel leader played by the always great Morgan Freeman. After the much hyped, tepidly received Tron sequel and now Oblivion, I regard director Joseph Kosinski as a bright and distinct stylist who cannot find and express the more meaningful currents and pulses of the stories he opts to tell.

David wrote: More aptly, it ain't no Minority Report. I disagree - - I would say it is very similar to Minority Report - - too long and too stupid. Bradley Witherberry wrote: Nice to see some "sci-fi", but [ Minority Report] clocks in at about a half an hour too long - the mystery at the heart of the story is pretty basic and ends up being more 'Murder She Wrote' than 'Columbo'. Still, the near future is always a cool setting for movies and it is loaded with heaps of cool technology. Fault lies in the hands of the director. 2 out of 5.

It is superior to the second and fourth Mission: Impossible films, both of which I find problematic. God knows I love Sir Cruise. This just did not excite me the way his best films do.

I liked it fine. It doesn't have an original idea in its head, but it's reasonably investing.

Nice visuals and solid acting (Cruise is quite good here, and I really liked both Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough), although it's nothing new at all. B

Re: Oblivion
One problem with this film as a love story: I found the Cruise/Riseborough relationship 100x more interesting than the Cruise/Kurylenko one. Which is not to say the former is this amazing, memorable screen romance for the ages, but it at least has interesting dimensions and a few of the feelings, hers in particular, ring true. I never felt an ounce of rooting interest for Kurylenko's character. I know they try very hard in the scene by the water where they recall their plan to grow old and fat there together, etc., etc. but it just does not come together in the right way. Not moving, and I am the type of person predisposed to love this type of scene. I always cry during Vanilla Sky.
