The entire show was about Ted and Robin getting together. Definitely one of the weirdest fanbase freak outs in tv history.

At least it’s better than being 2.5 Men which ended with Charlie being alive and getting a piano dropped on him and Chuck Lorre turning around and saying winning and also getting a piano dropped on him, but nobody cared enough to be mad about it.

36. Ghosts (US) (CBS)

This has been a fun easy watch for me. Because of its internal rules about the ghosts being trapped in a house where they can’t touch many things, it can’t do whatever it wants plot wise like the Good Place, however this forces them to have some smaller stakes physical comedy/ghosts disagreement plots that are kind of refreshing. I think the key is that they hit such home runs with the living characters casting and let the husband be funny, which allowed the ghosts to not have to carry the comedy at all times and have plotlines where they learn something at the end. I enjoy the mix of ghost caricatures with the anti-feminist 1800s woman and viking being my favorite.

Image

35. Family Guy (Fox)

I was born the perfect time for Family Guy as it was cancelled cult hit when I was 13-15 and I had seen all of the first three seasons episodes multiple times by the time it came back. I like all the family members in their own way although I have a soft spot for Brian the most, with Peter and Stewie also great. Meg and Chris make for some good plot lines. When I went back and watched some of the older episodes I liked the quality of seasons like 8, 9, 10, 11 more than I thought, I think there is a clear point where it slips which is the Brian death arc in season 12, although it’s still watchable to this day.

34. Hunter x Hunter

On the recommendation of a coworker, this is the only anime I’ve watched since DBZ reruns when I was a kid and I thought it was great! I like the theme of friendship and that they let Gon has an innocence to him. The score works really well. Hisoka is an instant classic villain/wild card. I was more into the Hunter training arc than the rest of the series I’ve seen so far (although the Greed Island arc was fun) and I’m disappointed it seems like Kurapika isn’t in in the latter arcs, but it still has some good stuff throughout. Maybe in the future I will have some more animes on my list.

Image

33. The Afterparty (AppleTV)

Season 1 was a perfect murder mystery comedy season for me, the high school reunion setting always delivers and I enjoyed the genre parodies, pop star jokes, musical episode, etc. I also thought they did a good job with the evidence and how it plays out at the end. I had only been a few of the season 2 episodes so far and as expected I’m not sure it was quite as good, but it was still enjoyable enough and had more spot on homages.

Afterparty is good, but I'm always annoyed when I guess the killer eariy on and that one was real easy.

Never seen Hunter v Hunter. Looks interesting but there's just so many episodes. I'd recommend some anime to you (Attack on Titan just finished and cemented its GOAT status) but you'd run into the same problem of too many episodes lol.

32. Foundation (AppleTV)

Season 1 of this was the one Apple show so far where I felt compelled to watch 8 episodes in a row, almost reminded me of watching all of Battlestar Galactica in a week (maybe it’s the Bear McCreary score), so I decided to rate it as the top Apple. The world building is great with the clone emperor concept being one of the coolest I’ve seen in a sci-fi show. The show looks fantastic overall. I liked the emperors and Gaal and Seldon/Jared Harris plot more than the Terminus one, but the latter got going a bit at the end.

Image

31. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

This is definitely the highest quality Amazon show I’ve watched in terms of the writing/costumes/directing/etc., I didn’t think they had this in them. I appreciate that they let Maisel’s sets be funny by modern day standards instead of actually having realistic 1950s female comedy (on the other hand Lenny Bruce’s stand-ups suffer in the show cause they have to use his real material), the show feels written by people who genuinely understand stand up, physical comedy, etc. Brosnahan and Borstein are a great combo and any of the scenes with either set of parents are hilarious with Shalhoub especially on fire.

I've only read the first Foundation and wanted to knock out a few more books before starting the series.

I like Maisel in season 1, but not so much in season 2 and just kinda stopped watching.

30. Riverdale (The CW)

Riverdale is off its rocker, however the fun part is it doesn’t pat itself on the back or acknowledge within the show how crazy it is like a Scream Queens type show, even if they secretly know what they’re doing, on the surface it still feels committed to the story/emotional arcs and having its characters treat it as real. It’s just the plots happen to be be ripping through stuff like an evil dungeons and dragons cult, Archie building a teen hunk army to fight a serial killer, Cheryl keeping her taxidermied dead brother in her basement, Veronica running a casino while in high school and feuding her mob boss dad, Betty exploring whether she has evil genes, etc. I appreciate the style (I haven’t seen many shows film “night scenes” better) and the cast combination really works for me in terms of charisma and having their unique looks and personas. It occurred to me that if I was ever good at writing books or screenplays I might be inspired more by Riverdale more than some better shows just cause it understands something about how to make plots entertaining.

Image

29. True Blood (HBO)

This may be a bit nostalgia impacted since I always knew they were flaws (too many characters and could cut 10 minutes an episode easily) but I overall enjoyed my True Blood experience. I like the concept of humans and vampires having to co-exist after the latter come out of the closet as real and it manages to make the gratuitous nudity and sex scenes work by making it hotter when there’s real romance involved in it like Bill and Sookie (on that note, I’m not complaining about the amount of nude Paquin scenes). The humour led by characters like Eric and Pam is pretty solid and while they villains are hit and miss there are some standouts like Russell. There are some great gore scenes like people exploding. Overall the combo of boobs, blood, humour is good enough for me.

The Anna Paquin nude scenes were pretty good but I could never get into the story of True Blood. It takes itself too seriously. Like how the first Twilight is fun campy high school romance but all the sequels are bores.

28. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (The WB)

Image

27. Angel (The WB)

These were some of the first shows I binged so I’ll always have a soft spot for them, even if I can’t rank them higher because I have too strong of a preference for pure serialized shows over ones that have obvious filler episodes to get to that 20 episode+ network quota. Both shows have a few weaker seasons such as 4/7 for Buffy and 4/1 for Angel, but my gut feeling is to put Angel slightly ahead, I think I like the lead character more with his tormented history, and I like the character development they had for Cordelia and Wesley. The extended lawyer villains work for me and I like how some arcs like the Darla one played out in it. Buffy is funnier and has one of my favorite tv episodes of all time in Once More, With Feeling and it has some incredible supporting cast characters like Xander and Giles, although Angel’s supporting cast comes together fine as well (I’ll always love Amy Acker). Angel’s cancellation played in its favor in the end as it got to end on a high note with a great season 5 with Spike and it makes the last shot one of the best.

26. Harley Quinn (HBO Max)

This would be my pick for the funniest show going right now with some standout supporting characters like Clayface, Bane and Joker and thanks to Cuoco’s performance and Ivy playing off her, Harley herself is also funny. I think one of the keys is the animation is so fantastic, it allows them to do a lot with physical jokes, gore, etc., have detailed character expressions and build up great montage sequences.

Harley is the best show of the decade so far.

25. Arrested Development (Fox)

This is definitely one of the funnier shows with some classic comedy characters like Tobias and Gob and other ones all get some good lines at one point or another. Of course, the references repeating later in the series just make it funnier. While Michael on the surface is the Brock Purdy/Jimmy Garapolo of the cast I appreciate that the subtlety with which they make him no better a person and deluded into thinking he’s better than them. My favorite season is actually 4, I love the structure gimmick and it had some great comedy moments like the Roofie cycle and Cera’s plot. This would be an interesting show to rewatch since I think I would get some of the America metaphors and commentary on narcissism more now.

Post Re: Shack’s messy list of top 50 favorite tv shows
I've rewatched True Blood probably... four or five times and I've never gotten tired of it.

I also stuck with Riverdale and was fine with the direction it took. It carved out a unique place for itself.

Haven't seen too many episodes of Ghosts, need to watch it properly, but have enjoyed the episodes I've caught on.

Harley is great. I'm usually not big on "adult cartoons" but Harley is gold.

Hunter x Hunter is pretty classic shonen. Definitely recommend giving more anime (outside the more standard shonen genre) a try, such as the always recommended Death Note, Attack on Titan (would suggest watching this one sooner rather than later since it just ended and spoilers will probably be rampant online now), Haikyu!!, and perhaps Spy x Family. I will always recommend One Piece too, but with almost 1,100 episodes now, I get the hesitancy of starting it and it does take most to reach episode 30+ before they get their first taste of its greatness. Curious if the success of the live-action Netflix show will get people to check out the anime.

For Western animation, I would suggest Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra, and then a few Disney cartoons like Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Star vs The Forces of Evil that I consider their star trifecta.

24. Dexter (Showtime)

This is a semi nostalgia pick in that maybe if it came out now I would be more picky about its flaws (and am out on Showtime in general), but I enjoyed my experience watching it year after year at the time. I really like the concept of the serial killer taking on the other killers, and with Hall’s performance it made for a great complex lead. He was surrounded by cop characters from a worse show, but they still had their charm I guess like Masuka’s humour and Deb being a fun shit talker sister. I always enjoyed the Miami setting and felt like it had a fun colourful vibe, and some production value stuff like the blood and score was great. I was happy with Dexter New Blood and reminded me that I enjoy watching him do his thing killing people on his table and head to head conversations with the big bad of the season, etc. Of course when judging whether to put this higher, I have to remember that the bad seasons like the Colin Hanks one also count.

23. Barry (HBO)

This is one of the most unique shows I’ve seen, perhaps it can be best described as “traumady” as if testing how dark it can go while still having a comedy set piece a few minutes later. The supporting cast has some stellar roles like Carrigan, Winkler and Root while Hader is key to making such a deluded shitty person rootable enough and Goldberg as the semi egomaniac (as area all the main characters really) Sally does the job. Some of the action set pieces like the rony/lily episode and motorcycle chase are amazing. I really liked the flash forward ending and how they made every primary character important such as Fuches who could have fell back as 5th wheel status.

3 excellent choices in a row!

I figured out how I'm gonna do my tv list but I'll probably wait until after this years FF music recap.

22. The Shield (FX)

I liked the “raw AF” visual style, it felt like being on the streets with these guys. Chiklis as Vic is a classic anti hero and Goggins as Shane with his tragic arc couldn’t be cast better. Some guest stars like Anthony Anderson, Forrest Whitaker and Glenn Close were fun. I don’t know if it needed the detective side cases as it was made at a transition point between episodic and fully serialized dramas, but the Dutch/Claudette actors are good so it's watchable enough. Exploring masculinity will always be interesting to me and dirty/violent cops is a subject that hasn’t gotten less relevant. This is definitely one of the best cop shows in history.

21. Breaking Bad (AMC)

While there are some bigger fans than me of this out there, it’s still a classic drama overall about how the humanity of evil and the small steps there justifying themselves at every step, with a well thought out story arc as Walter’s ego and overrating of his plans and ability to explain his way out of things contaminates everything around him. I really like the hot desert Albuquerque vibe thanks to the cinematography, and it understands to have enough humour like Badger/Skinny Pete or Saul. And of course, Bryan Cranston is on an all time heater in this, along with Paul and some great supporting characters like Mike and Gus. It actually DIDN’T stick the landing to me as I feel Walt is a bit too much of a good guy in the finale (it would have been the best ending ever if the last shot was him dead on his steering wheel in New Hampshire having only fantasized his redemption) but that’s ok as the first half of the last season was excellent.

The teens and low 20s is the section with the most critical acclaimed dramas, a good place to put shows that feel like one of the best of all time but are a little less close to my heart than the ones in top 10.

20. UnREAL (Lifetime)

I feel like this is the reality tv version of how in Hostel the evil rich guys pay to watch people die, but since you the audience signed up to see a total gore fest, you’re kind of a hypocrite for being into the same stuff as them. Likewise this is skewering the manipulation of the industry, but since it still got me hooked to see which character is going to win the season or be eliminated next, whether the suitor is going to pick my girl Rachel, and eating up juicy breakdowns and fights, it makes me like the real Bachelor viewers in a way. Rachel and Quinn are both amazing characters and performances with complex unhealthy relationship. The cast drops off a bit from there as if Lifetime ran out of money for actors like Rachel’s abusive ex, and Season 2 to 4 retreads a bit just by doing new seasons of the reality show with black suitor (didn’t go well in terms of online reception), bachelorette and all-star seasons respectively, but part of the plot is that they can’t escape the cycle I suppose. The dialog is always sharp and I like the sharp editing and directing style. It feels destined to be one of the most underrated shows since it aired on Lifetime in the brief period they were making edgier stuff like this and You.

Haven't seen Unreal or The Shield. They both seem like they'd be good but at this point there's just too many episodes.

BBad is obviously a winner though.
