Slow Horses Season 1 - B+

Cuts some corners with spy stuff sometimes (maybe the book's fault?) but I was impressed by its directing, the villain POV side of the story was pretty well done, and at 6 episodes was a nice fast paced adventure once it got going. Gary Oldman's character/performance is immediately one of the best on TV.

1. Dragon Prince season 4 - 7

-A soft reboot for the Dragon Prince, mostly taking its time to put these characters back together after starting so far apart.

2. Ozark season 1 - 7.5

-Desperately trying so hard to be Breaking Bad makes this show a little cringe sometimes, and you can stick that blue filter up your arse. Otherwise, a pretty solid show and I audibly gasped at some of the death scenes. I'll continue on with it whenever I get Netflix back.

3. Andor season 1 - 7.7
4. Beavis and Butthead reboot season 1 - 8

Andor had a weird flow to the story, and I wish it starred a different character that we didn't already know the fate of, but overall was pretty good.

Beavis and Butthead was comfort food tv. Just made me feel good while watching it. Yet its also interesting to see how they interact with the modern world (they time travelled in the new movie, Do The Universe, which leads into the new series.) They replaced mtv with youtube, which adds commentary to influencer videos alongside their usual music videos. I'd highly recommend it to anyone with fond memories of the old series. King of the Hill is already getting a reboot too, and I hope Daria follows. It'd be a good show for Paramount Plus. Show Velma how its done.

5. Chainsaw Man season 1 - 7.4
6. Sex Lives of College Girls season 2 - 5.8

Chainsaw Man is a bit immature, it feels like Beavis and Butthead meets Jujutsu Kaisen, and that was a turn off at first. Yet as the series goes along, and you realize that most characters take themselves very seriously, it grows on you. Making the usual zany sex-obsessed side character front and center in a show like this is a unique touch as I feel like Aki, not Denji, would be the main character in most animes. And, like all the best, they have a way of ending episodes that makes you have to watch the next one immediately.

I couldn't get into Sex Lives season 2. I started it before Chainsaw, almost quit it about halfway, but came back after splurging through the former. Bela was my favorite character in the first season, but she became an actually despicable person this year that is impossible to root for. The other three girls basically repeat their storylines from the previous season.

7. Mythic Quest season 3 - 7.5
8. Abbot Elementary season 1 - 6.8

Mythic Quest is still going strong, but it was a weird season. CW is badly missed. And quite frankly so is Ian. Feels like Rob was barely there at all and could have filmed all of his scenes in a single day. The rest of the characters still had good arcs though.

Abbot starts pretty slowly, and I'm not sure if the creators of the show realized that the main character is more of a Michael than a Pam. It comes into its own as it goes along though, like many sitcoms that came before it. The janitor is the funniest part.

9. Young Rock season 1 - 8.8
10. History of the World Part II season 1 - 5.5
11. The Last Of Us season 1 - 9

Young Rock is one of the biggest surprises I've had in awhile. I had brushed it off for years just assuming itd be little more than Rockaganda and network tv nonsense. But its a ton of fun just watching the different people that Dewey interacted with throughout his life. Andre, Macho and Iron Shiek all coming over for a Samoan Thanksgiving is not something I knew I needed.

History of the World is Mel Brooks for the tiktok generation. More bits fall flat than work (way too much Nick Kroll), though a couple bits are actually really good. Getting anything new from a 94 year old Mel Brooks is a win in my book though.

I had some issues with some of the changes they made to The Last of Us, but overall it was a smashing success and should hopefully end the video game adaptation stigma once and for all.

Slow Horses Season 2 - B
Shrinking Season 1 - A-

It took me a few episodes but I ended up being a fan of this and thinking it's better than Ted Lasso, the style everyone talking to each other and being at each other's houses and stuff feels natural, and I haven't seen a cast this good and deep in a comedy show in a while. I knew Ford (a crime if he doesn't get the Emmy) and Segel would deliver but Jessica Williams stole the show for me other than Ford, Christa Miller, Derek McGinley are also killing it and Lukita Maxwell gives a nice (and ok to say as she's 21 in real life, highly attractive) daughter performance, and Michael Urie and Luke Tennie are likeable as well.

12. Young Rock season 2 - 9
13. South Park season 26 - 8.7
14. Young Rock season 3 - 9

Young Rock was just a great time and I hope it gets more episodes, but getting put directly against Smackdown is a bad sign and they did wrap things up well enough with season 3 finale.

South Park was once again barely a season with only 6 episodes, but most of them were hits. Japanese Toilet and Dickinbaus were two of the better episodes in recent years.

15. Demon Slayer Entertainment District Arc - 8.8
16. The Mandalorian season 3 - 8.4

I'm done with trying to figure out season numbers for anime shows lol. Entertainment District, for me, was a better version of Mugen Train Arc (which I rewatched in tv form before this.) The demon (s) is more interesting, the 5/6 episode long fight scene is epic and the ending is much more satisfying. Also, even though I'm aware it makes me a perv, I like how Nezuko's tits get gigantic when she powers up into a super demon. I never understand Zenitsu's crush on her until that moment.

Mando had some lows that the first two seasons (and second half of Boba Fett) did not. That third episode was borderline unwatchable. It pulled itself together by the end though, and I real liked the controversial Bryce Dallas Howard episode (you had me at battle droids.) So this season is still a win even though it's not a 10 like season 2 was.

17. Green Planet - 8.5
18. Married With Children season 1 - 8
19. Owl House season 3 - 8.5

I shouldn't be surprised at the wonders of BBC Earth anymore, but damn I was not expecting the plant show to be so compelling. I never really thought about plants competing for resources the same way that animals do. But yeah, they are as cold blooded as any reptile with the way they smother their neighbors in efforts to get as much light as possible.

I don't usually love older shows too much, but the first season of Married With Children held up very well and I look forward to continuing it.

Owl House gave me a satisyfing "final episode", but this story needed a couple more hours to really hit the way it needed to. Damn you Disney for cancelling it! However, I thought it did leave some things open-ended and wouldn't be too surprised by a return once all their current political heat fades away.

20. Married With Children season 2 - 8.4
21. Frozen Planet 2 - 9
22. Rick and Morty season 6 - 6.5

Married With Children and its raunchy hinjix continues to be fun. Dunno if I'll watch the whole series, I got bored with Frasier around season 6 for instance, but I'll keep going to 3 at least.

The advancing drone technology gave Frozen Planet 2 some truly incredible shots and its one of the best nature shows ever because of it. The shit where the orca create artificial waves to knocked seals off ice platforms was unreal and one of the coolest (or saddest if you are a seal) things I've ever seen on one of these. Though the gay birds might have been going a bit too far. Even nature is woke now? Outrageous!!!

Rick and Morty season 6 was unfortunately disappointing (I gave s5 a 9.9.) They went a bit too far with the references and meta story telling. The fortune cookie episode and the one where the two Beths get it on were pretty good but there weren't any classics. Even the previous weakest season, 4, had snake jazz. Still, R&M at its worst is still better than most shows at their best. And if this was season 1 then I'd probably give it a higher grade (like a 7.5), I just have such great expectations for this show. Maybe it'll improve with a second viewing.

I'll get some in before the Succession/Lasso/Barry drop

Slow Horses Season 1 - B+
Velma Season 1 - A-
Slow Horses Season 2 - B
Shrinking Season 1 - A-
Ghosts Season 2 - B+
Night Court (2023) Season 1 - B

I'm happy to see Ghosts be a ratings smash, it is a solid show. Night Court misses on some jokes but I think the cast has a lot of potential.

Ted Lasso saved itself a bit in the last two episodes, but still a season that shot itself in the foot with boring subplots and way too long of episodes.

Couldn't really ask for more from Succession's last season that wraps up a true prestige TV banger.

Underrated comedy. I really liked the use of "crisis comedy" and cringe/awkward moments. I tried watching Superstore as it has the same creator and it didn't work for me.

23. Yellowjackets season 2 - 9
24. Ted Lasso season 3 - 8.8
25. Married With Children season 3 - 8.1

Yellowjackets s2 was about the same quality as s1 I'd say, but in a weird the show kind of flipped around too. This time around, I found the parts where they are adults to be much more interesting than learning about how the younger versions became cannibals.

Lasso was better than last season though. S2 started off hot but then randomly decided to switch from half hour comedy to hour long drama in the middle of the season. This time around every episode is close to an hour and the writing feels much more comfortable. Not to say there aren't still big laughs, but the emotional parts were what stuck out and if this is truly the end (which I doubt) then it went out a high note.

Applegate really takes over in s3 of MWC. Sure, O Neil and Segal still get the most screen time, but Kelly is such a riot every time they focus on her. It's no wonder she emerged as the biggest star.

26. Barry season 4 - 8.7
27. His Dark Materials season 3 - 6.5
28. Married With Children season 4 - 5.9

Barry started slow but ended well. The scene where the swat team raids dave and busters is an all timer LOL. And the ending is fucking chilling. Goes to show how little importance the truth has.

His Dark Materials was better than the movie (obviously) but I still don't feel like we've gotten a proper adaptation of this story. The movie was trying to be Lord of the Rings and the show was trying to be Game of Thrones. Neither was able to see that just being His Dark Materials was fine on its own. At least they nailed the biggest moment of the season (and arguably the biggest in the whole series) where Lyra frees the dead.

Married definitely took a downturn in season 4. Peggy and Bud were straight up annoying for most of the season. And while Al and Kelly are still funny, they also resort to a lot of physical gags. Felt like every other episode had a toilet flushing and Al walking out like "yeah I just took a shit what of it?"

I feel better about the Bear season 2 after the second half of the season as the crazy family dinner episode and finale were good, but I feel like could have gotten away with flash forwarding a year to the new restaurant being open in the season 1 finale and had most of the same plots like making the dessert chef go to Copenhagen and making Richie go clean forks just by making them take a week off while the restaurant was open. The relationship storyline felt like filler to get through reno season, although the girl was cute.

I thought I would love Platonic after the first few episodes and ended up settling for just liking it, since it felt like the Rogen and Byrne characters story is over, I think I'd have preferred if they anthology'd this and there was a new platonic friends played by Samberg and Rashida Jones or Krasinski and Fischer next season or something.

29. Our Planet 2 - 7
30. Black Mirror season 6 - 8
31. Beef - 10

Our Planet 1 was, at the time, one of the top nature docs of all time, showcasing glorious 4k footage and mixing it hard-hitting environmentalist messages at all points of the show. OP2 ... kinda does the same thing but it doesn't feel as special in 2023 compared to the footage BBC Earth has been getting lately with the excellent Frozen Planet 2 and Green Planet.

Black Mirror 6 was had its usual ups and downs, but Joan Is Awful was a top tier episode and none of them were terrible, so I'd say it was better than seasons 5 and 2 at least.

Beef might be the single best season of any netflix show. I'd be happy with it ending here, but I'd also be down for plenty more of these lunatics destroying their lives.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 1 - A-

Jury Duty was a fun enough little experiment that struck gold with such a likeable real and charismatic person in the middle of it. The power of editing goes a long way cause they can act 90% normal and boring in reality and then do a few ridiculous things a day and then use that for the episode. Surely he must have realized Marsden was up to something but maybe didn't realize the others weren't in the same boat as him, although he did crack up a few times which made me suspicious.

Impressed by Mrs Maisel ensemble all around, and it got funnier as the show went along, helping separate it in tone from Mad Men. Both parents are hilarious and there is a lot of small random characters who are funny, but Borstein is my favorite performance on the show. Even the husband character which I can see some people not liking had decent romantic chemistry with Midge. Her stand up jokes were pretty well written as they let them be modern funny instead of being 100% accurate with the cheesy 1950s material, and the show seemed to understand the difference between a funny person and an unfunny one, other than how Lenny Bruce's stand ups are never really that funny, maybe they were trying to use his real outdated material.
