Netflix sneakily got Community. Think it could do pretty well with their platform

Community will never get a lot of fans because of its different format but I'll re-watch it if they get it here.

Netflix may still have a lot of subscribers but they aren't where they were 5-6 years ago in terms of creating new buzzed about hits. They also have been quite slow with the release dates in recent years, their #1 hit Stranger Things having one season since 2017 seems crazy even with the pandemic, and 2 year wait for Haunting of Hill House deflated it. The Witcher I think they had no choice with the pandemic.

I cancelled my netflix two months ago and have been fine without it. I’ll get it back in May, watch a few movies like Army of the Dead and Moxie, then cancel again. Disney, HBO and Hulu have been way better this year.

I didn't realize they are close to turning profit, thanks to pandemic. But I still think they are overrated as original content producer for how much they spend and the advantage of how many people have Netflix. If Nielson is to be believed in the top 10 most streamed shows only Ozark and The Crown are in top 10 in 2020. The rest other than the Office is stuff like Grey's, Criminal Minds, Lucifer, NCIS, Supernatural, Shameless, Schitt's Creek. Stranger Things isn't in top 10 cause it has 25 episodes so it's obviously not going to have as many hours watched as Grey's but that's also the point, Netflix can't really cash in on the 15 season monsters or the rewatchable comedies

At this point it doesn't matter what the content really is with ALL of the regional Netflix ( I know you can't read subtitles) Delivering new shows almost on a weekly basis you literally have nonstop movies, tv shows from all genres, you want horror? You have French netflix's Martian. You want drama? You have Spain's Elite. You want comedy? You have Mexico's trashy comedy shows.

The fact that you get all of this cultural mash up for a single payment a month? It's guaranteed to last decades. All Netflix has to market is ALL of their different shows that are actually really great to the world and they will be fine.

What other streaming platform offers you that? No one. They don't even have half of Netflix originals.

The problem with this strategy is it costs too much money to make a thousand shows and barely market them all, that's why nobody else copies it. Despite paying 15 billion+ a year it appears taking into account movies and TV Netflix OC makes up <10%, maybe <5% of what people watch on there. I'm saying their original content strategy wouldn't work on its own except what keeps the lights on is the licensed content from movie library and network/cable tv shows.

Change this to a poll; which of the big streamers will be the first to give up? Probably Paramount, but I sure hope its Peacock. Trash app.

Yea the Peacock, HBO Max, etc. jumping in and spending massive numbers to get shows seems stupid in retrospect.

Amazon and Apple have a reason to be in the game regardless of how successful their shows are, since they're just promoting their brand/other products. Apple's name being attached to Emmy winner Ted Lasso is good marketing.

HBO Max is deffo my fave stremaing app right now.

With Netflix a step behind.

Paramount Plus should outlast Peacock for sure, by virtue of having already existed as CBS ALL Access for years.

If KJ somehow survives that long I will bump this thread when it happens. It may happen before then anyways.

12 billion+ in debt
Rising competition at a cheaper price
Losing Friends/The Office
Damaging their originals brand with mediocre quality and cancellations after 2-3 years

A lot sooner then you predicted perhaps!

The reasons were a little bit different than I thought, I was focused on the debt as the biggest reason but it looks like they have their spending more under control now. However their online reputation has been damaged due to going crazy cancelling shows, siding with Chappelle, and general old toy syndrome. One of the problems being that for people who believe their shows quality was overrated to begin with, it means something of a bubble pops once the shine wears off, there is no more reason to overrate Netflix shows if the brand power is not as strong.

Post subject:  Re: Netflix will be dead by 2030

Netflix will be fine, but I don't think people see it as necessary anymore. They've lost so much of their legacy content and completely rely on original stuff now. And, opinions on quality aside, they haven't had the buzzworthy watercooler show since Squid Game hype faded. Hawkeye, Yellowjackets, Euphoria, Yellowstone and Peacemaker have all been on other, less expensive streamers. In fact I think its #3 in terms of must see content, behind Disney and way behind HBO Max. Hell even Peacock has been getting alot better.

But with Stranger Things coming out I imagine netflix will bounce back ... then take another tumble as we cancel our accounts again.

Post subject:  Re: Netflix will be dead by 2030

Netflix has become the subscribe for one or two months a year service for me to catch certain shows. Having it year round, or anywhere close, hasn't made financial sense for a while. This has been especially true since they've raised prices while more and more competitors were popping up (what an odd decision).

Usually you try to remain competitive or slightly edge out the competition in pricing wars, but Netflix took the bizarre opposite approach.

Peacock originals seems like one of the biggest flops. I haven't seen people caring any of their shows. They have great older shows but are giving up a ton of money compared to if they were just selling them to someone else like Netflix.
