I hadn't heard of a bottle episode before, but judging from the definition, it doesn't seem like one. The regular cast members were there. It was set in one place, but not using the main interior sets.

From the Wiki link:

Another example is Seinfeld's Season 2, Episode 11 "The Chinese Restaurant", which takes place almost entirely in the waiting room of a restaurant.

Ha, really? I checked it but didn't spot it. :funny:

But I don't get "almost entirely". I watched it last night. It is entirely set in the waiting room.

Larry David is apparently at the table where Elaine tries to eat the egg roll.

I am aware about the "show about nothing" thing. Larry David never subscribed to that. He said in a Charlie Rose interview that he always thought it was a show about how a comedian gets his material.

Anyway, I think "The Chinese Restaurant" is a great episode, and I actually love the fact that the episodes do not really have much going on. I like listening to people just hanging out and doing stuff.

Yes they have a little fun with the whole "show about nothing" concept in Season 4.

Agreed. I love the "hanging out" in one place episodes. There are a bunch of them, especially in seasons 3-5. Enjoy.

Really? Awesome. I didn't spot him. I did, however, feel he was the voice of the patient in the next bed to Constanza in "The Heart Attack" (which he was also on the TV).

Cool. I look forward to it.

"Let me ask you something..."

Would you say there is a noticeable difference between the Tom Cherones-directed seasons and the Andy Ackerman-directed ones?

Also I was bit miffed to see that Larry David does not write all the shows. Will the humour be as good in non-David episodes? or does he check each one before it is submitted anyhow? Even the Farrelly Brothers wrote an episode.

I actually have never seen him in the Chinese restaurant episode but read about it a few days back after seeing thegun's post.

He does a lot of voice cameos so its highly likely it was him in "The Heart Attack".

Good question. I'd say that by watching all the seasons in sequence there is a noticeable difference between episodes directed by Cherones vs. Ackerman. Cherones episodes are generally more of the talky, witty, hang out type comedy. Ackerman's tenure saw the comedy become more visual and physical.

Personally i prefer the Cherones seasons but both directed classic episodes. It may be unfair to directly compare the two seeing that one directed the first five seasons when the show was finding its feet but fresh while the other directed the last four when the show was at its peak of fame but also ageing.

In regards to writers, there are some great non Larry David episodes too. In particular I like Larry Charles written episodes.

Larry did oversee most of the episodes he didnt write anyway.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. :)

Just finished Season Two. "The Busboy" isn't one of the greats, let's just say that. What a damp squib to end the season on! Interestingly it was the least watched episode up to that point. I wonder why. Did they know it was shit and dump it? Still, 12.5m viewers though!! :whaa:

Just watched "The Note". It was ok, but I see that George is quickly, and unfortunately, becoming the clown.

It aired in late June which is after the regular TV season had ended. Viewership drops across the board in the summer since everything is in reruns until the fall season starts.

Season Three isn't that great. I prefer Season Two. Though I did enjoy "The Pen" (the parents make it unique) and "The Library" (Philip Baker Hall's Bookman is great). Kramer seems to be funnier and given more space to be funny now. In the first and second seasons he was more of a Gunther-type supporting role, but he is a fully-fledged member now, making up the quartet.

I'm looking forward to the next episode, which is "The Parking Garage", because it's written by Larry David.

Season 3 will undeniably get great and it all starts with the Parking Garage. It's the chinese restaurant on steroids up to this point. The Subway is another similar style episode.

As to the quality. Larry David left after Season 7 and Jerry took over, so you'll be able to judge non David episodes (though he did write the finale) I personally love seasons 8 and 9. They are definitely broader, but they are unarguably hilarious, with how crazy they can get. The infamous backwards episode (2 years before Memento came out) tests the formula about "nothing" as it still works.

You'll notice a big change in quality from season 3 to 4. Especially as it ends on a cliffhanger. 4 is where the show hardly misses ever again.

Season 3 is fine but Seinfeld doesn't really hit its stride and become a phenomenon until season 4. Season 4 has some of the show's best episodes (including "The Bubble Boy," the famous "The Contest" which is typically considered the show's BEST episode and "The Junior Mint").

Ahh "The Bubble Boy" is one of my favorites of the whole series:

"Moops!"
"Moors!"
"MOOPS!"
"MOORS!"

So I watched "The Parking Garage". Good episode, but not the classic I was told it would be. But the next episode, "The Cafe", the one with the IQ test and the Pakistani restaurateur was very funny. George's fib about going out the window was hilarious, and Jerry's smugness about being a nice guy. Great stuff.

Just finished "The Red Dot". Pretty good stuff. I really liked "The Nose Job". Basically when Kramer comes out with the cold, hard truth ("You're as pretty as any of them. Just need a nose job") it is hilarious. Kind of stuff I come out with.

Yeah The Nose Job is pretty awesome. It's also the one where Jerry's brain and dick play chess.

"You haven't seen the last of me"

I kind of wish the penis chess match came back. But that was the beauty of seinfeld, too many great jokes to fit into every show.

Also I love the Red Dot and the cleaning lady's crazy rant about cashmere. I can't wait till you get to the Cigar store Indian episode. It might be the funniest 3 minutes ever on the show. Funniest Kramer moment IMO

On the whole, Season Three has found good rhythm. I like it. But it works so much better if you don't binge on it.

I quote enjoy revisiting Season 3. Season 4 interestingly is more binge worthy because it has a number of related episodes plus an interesting season long story arc.

I do like recurring jokes. It is a nice surprise. Like how Jerry refers to George as "Biff" from Death of a Salesman. Also, interestingly, Alexander being a theatre actor, once played that character in a play.

My favorite recurring joke outside of the Star Trek Kahn reference, has to be when they obviously know who is on the phone but question who it is. Them smacking the shit out of a pay phone always makes me laugh.
