I finally found a new show that I like - Slow Horses on apple with Gary Oldman and Olivia Cook. A misfit spy show that doesn't take itself too seriously though also isn't an outright comedy. Not breaking any barriers or anything, but its the first pilot episode I've really enjoyed since One Piece like a year ago. Not counting Scott Pilgrim or X-Men 97 which were technically new shows but full of characters I was already familiar with.

Still enjoying, but disappointing that

Spoiler: show
Olivia Cooke got shot in the second episode. I'm sure shes not really dead considering the circumstances, but it means shes not a regular part of the cast.

Recent watches:

The Umbrella Academy (Season 4) - I actually enjoyed this more than the absolute mess that was season 3, and for the most part this is still a really strong ensemble, but the season is too short to make any sort of impact and the finale feels rushed. After how awesome season 2 was this show really went out with a whimper.

Snowpiercer (Season 1) - started this as I accidentally subscribed to AMC+ for longer than I expected and figured I'd give it a shot. It was a lot of fun and Jennifer Connelly was excellent. Excited to watch subsequent seasons.

Presumed Innocent (Season 1) - despite a game cast I found this just awful. One of the worst shows of the year for me.

The Acolyte (Season 1) - first piece of Star Wars related content I've enjoyed since The Last Jedi. and one of the few to hold my interest all the way through. A shame it got canceled.

Billions is a fucking fun show. Season 1 had the usual cringe of awkward side plots that are wisely dropped, but seaso 2 is fantastic. It's like a cross between Suits and Wall Street, and some great performances from the leads, and some great dark humor. I'm excited as it seems to only get better until the the final season which still did well.

I totally got burned on Shameless though, that should have never gone to 12 seasons. I felt like everything after 5 was complete rehash so I was surprised by the continued rave reviews.

Yeah, Billions is pretty great, i didn't continue after Lewis left though.

Also, totally not my thing, but my wife's been watching it and I couldn't help but be somewhat entertained by it too; Vanderpump Rules.

Slippery slope, dude. I reject braindead reality tv at all costs.

Yeah, I haven't never watched any reality show except for the first season of big brother out of curiosity. Anything I've since seen a smidge of I've pretty much found all terrible, one is maybe less worse than the other, but I could just not found any interesting.
Now this Vanderpump Rules is basically the same, it all seems so staged and exaggerated, yet, this has drama that actually got me to watch more than is good for me, lol.

Survivor is by far the GOAT, I also watched Amazing Race when I was younger. The ones where it's just people living in a house are always too faked.

I wanna like Presumed Innocent cause its a legal thriller with Jake G ... but its really hitting one of my biggest pet peeves of scripts telling us that these characters are very very smart and then proceding to show them doing nothing but stupid things thereafter. I'd have so much more respect for the show if everyone acknowledged he was probably guilty and helped him anyways. Anyone who continued to believe him after he obstructed the case in the first episode just breaks the limits of reason for me. Only halfway through and really don't care if he did it or not.

Blue Eyed Samurai, however, was fantastic. Netflix was on such a roll last year.

Gotta say, I'm actually enjoying billions even without Lewis, season six is usually a nosedive for many shows (I'd say this is more Walking Dead after Rick than 24 or Dexter season 6, or Suits after Mike) the dynamic has changed but the side characters are as strong as ever, and lewis does come back for the final season.

I'm debating between the Wire and Justified next, maybe deadwood, any thoughts?

I'd have the Wire as the best of those. It has some great cop and drug dealer characters, dialog and well structured seasons and a great sense of humor helps it a lot. it deserves its spot among famously critically acclaimed shows in prestige tv era like Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Succession even if I'd put it probably more like 4th/5th of those personally.

Justified is good in a "Showtime way" to me, I usually find Showtime shows watchable but I don't consider them to make many classics, it is pretty easy to watch whereas The Wire is more serious undertaking. I'd make a comparison with Dexter in that they both have big bad season arcs and are probably close in seriousness, though the sheriff vs hicks concept is less appealing to me than serial killer vigilante. I liked it until the 5th season with Michael Rapaport as big bad that wasn't working (not sure if it was his fault) and never finished it.

Deadwood didn't work for me when I tried it, I didn't think the plot was going anywhere and the dialog writing was flowery and was having diminishing returns, and felt like patient 0 to me in terms of the HBO shows that have too many characters and the 10th most important character having their own plot. I'm also not an old west nerd at all though.

How about kalifornication or sons of anarchy? I’ll probably just watch them all.

Wow sounds interesting. I love Olivia Cook as an actress who plays Alicent Hightower in HOTD
