Post Re: Manga Circulation Milestone Timeline
More will be added over time. Simply copy/pasting what I shared in the Japan Box Office thread. If there are any errors made, please let me know and I'll edit them.

And anyone feel free to choose a series not already done and post it here. I'll add it to the first post. No need to bother formatting it either if you don't want as I can easily do that.

Basically looking for: Milestone figure [# of volumes in release at time of milestone] and date achieved or announced. I've also included some additional stats (when the 1st volume was released, when the anime premiered (if it has one), and when the final chapter and volume were released for concluded series) to see the impact and growth they had before/after these events.

Thanks Corpse !

It's interesting to see the similarities/differences between AC and TPN. Both have around 20 volumes (21 and 20) released and an anime that doesn't really boost too much sales. AC beginning was really impressive and it kept an incredible regularity. TPN has started really good but it's doing really great since it ended... it's not over and it seems it's selling really well in occident too.

The movie may have helped The Promised Neverland pick up some new fans. Since it adapted the first arc, it's assessible for non-fans too. Not a ton, of course as the vast majority of its audience should be the fans of the series, but anyone who went into as a non-manga reader/anime watcher and enjoyed it could have wanted to continue the story by picking up the manga.

And having an ongoing anime should also help with sales for a while.

I'll add one or two more tomorrow. Going to focus more on ongoing series, but will add concluded series as well. So any suggestions are welcomed. I'll probably do Dr. Stone next.

Post Re: Manga Circulation Milestone Timeline
Yeah. I saw the announcement last night. It could very well be the fastest series to reach 30 million copies in print. It did so in 2 years and 7 months. Definitely feel free to correct me with any of this, but I think One Piece is the only other series that could have done so faster.

One Piece hit 37 million back in December of 2000 after 16 volumes were released, which is almost exactly 3 years after its first volume was released. It's possible, perhaps even likely (just no data to say with 100% certainty), that it hit 30 million a little earlier than Jujutsu Kaisen.

We don't know when Demon Slayer hit 30 million, but since it hit 25 million in early Dec. 2019 and 40 million in Feb. 2020, it was likely either late December 2019 or early January 2020. If we assume that to be true, it hit 30 million after 3 years and 6/7 months with 18 volumes in release.

Naruto probably follows them at 3 years and 9 months when it was reported at 31 million after the release of its 20th volume.

I think every other series that have 30 million copies in print took 4 years or longer. But also note that comparing different series on when they hit certain milestones isn't an apples to apples comparison in most cases.

I totally don't know about it. Maybe Slam Dunk could hit 30M fast ? But I don't think there's data to find an answer...

Slam Dunk was at 32 million at the end of October 1993 with 15 volumes in release, so it hit 30 million after 2 months and 6 months based on that. Very close with Jujutsu Kaisen, but one month faster based on the announcement dates. So yeah, I think we can say Slam Dunk is the fastest to reach 30 million unless One Piece did it (37 million after 3 years suggests it might have hit 30 million in 2.5 years or slightly less).

Post Re: Manga Circulation Milestone Timeline
Dr. Stone (Copies in Circulation: 8.4 million)
Original Run: Mar. 6th, 2017 - Present (Ongoing)

*Volume 1 released on July 7th, 2017*
2.0 million [10] - July 2nd, 2019
*Anime premiered on July 5th, 2019*
3.0 million [13] - Feb. 4th, 2020
5.0 million [16] - July 3rd, 2020
7.5 million [17] - Sept. 4th, 2020
8.0 million [18] - Dec. 3rd, 2020
8.4 million [19] - Jan. 3rd, 2021

And that's all I could gather for Dr. Stone. Wish there was one or two reports before it already had 10 volumes out. Also added to the original post.

Not a huge series, of course, but sales have picked up a bit since season one of the anime (Dec. 2019), and I believe the most recent volume (19) has outpaced all past volumes in sales during the same amount of time. The second season is currently airing.

I'll post one more ongoing series later tonight.

Also added to the original post.

A somewhat rare case of an anime adaptation providing little to no boost to the manga sales. Sales have been especially slow in the last year+. And the anime will be airing its final episode at the end of March, apparently in the middle of (or at least before the conclusion of) a major arc in the story. I'm a bit behind on this one, but I read the anime has caught up to the manga and could be one of the reasons they're "concluding" the anime next month.

But with a special announcement to follow the final episode, I wouldn't expect the anime to be completely canceled. (Although I also wouldn't be totally shocked.) It's not very popular in Japan, but it's really popular overseas so there's reason to continue it as a seasonal anime at a later date or perhaps following Bleach's final arc adaptation this year, which would allow the manga to pull ahead again.

Boom! I'm guessing it'll get above 200 million eventually. We still have several years before its all adapted in anime form (TV or movies), with Season 2 just reaching roughly the 50% point in the story, so that'll keep it going for some time. Since sales have naturally slowed in recent weeks, I hope we get some more "frequent" updates from this point and not only when they move another 20 million+.

Original post updated too.

I feel the same. Btw, do you think that JJK might eventually get to the realms of 100 million copies sooner this year? Or will it stagnate a bit and will reach those numbers along in it's future year runs just like how the other big series like Naruto, Bleach, etch.?

KnY can get some new readers from video-game maybe but not too many I guess.
JjK volume 15 release will tell us more. I don't read the manga so don't know if the story seems to be at 50% or something like that too (if it'll run longer than 23 volumes for exemple). My opinion is that it will hits like 3M/vol and stabilize... I still think it won't do what KnY did because, to me, it's hard to get 2 phenomenom at same time but it's not a science so maybe it's juste a new age of mangas...xD

Welp, I think so too. But Jump has pump out several 50mil+ copies manga that was release simultaneously. Like when the Big 3 was at their peak, all 3 were slaying numbers in their own way.
But while I do think that JJK has the potential, it doesn't have that extra ooomph yet to push things and make it to the phenomenon that is KnY. Though I'm pretty sure that JJK would beat OP's best year if not equal it.

At its current pace, I see no reason to dismiss Jujutsu Kaisen reaching 100 million at some point. I wouldn't expect it to reach that milestone this year though unless it receives another boost after season 1 concludes in 6 weeks.

I still don't really think we have a good grasp of what JJK's potential is yet due to stocking issues and such. Volume 14, while having a very, very impressive first week, and exceeding 1 million copies in just three weeks, wasn't able to debut as high as it could have (definitely received a sub-1 million first print run, otherwise it would have been announced) is currently awaiting another reprint. We'll need to see what they can do for Volume 15 in a few weeks.

Shueisha simply hasn't been able to keep up with the overall demand for their manga series' over the past several months (or year). It's impacting all of their series', including their smaller ones like Dr. Stone, or so I've read. There are only so many books you can physically print at a time after all.

I wouldn't expect it to reach Demon Slayer's individual volume sales. It's really in a league of its own. Even 3 million for JJK would be pretty bonkers considering One Piece is the only other series in Oricon's history (2008-) with any volumes selling more than 3 million copies. I'm sure there are a few others from the past, such as Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk, but I don't think any record exists of any of the individual volume sales for them to make the claim as a fact.

I'm not fully caught up with it (in the middle of arc that seems like it'll occur shortly into a season 2 of the anime), but from what I've read, it certainly seems like JJK is going to be your traditional longer Shonen series if all goes well during its run (looking at you Hunter x Hunter). And Shueisha is in need of another long series they can rely on in the long-term versus banking on the success of series' that are ending in under 5-years.

JjK has reached 36M of copies (15 + vol 0), and volume 15 will have a print of 1,5M copies. Why not a initial of 2M ? I dunno... too many copies to print ? ^^' Oh and I heard JjK must end in 2023 if things go like Gege planned.
CsM has 9,3M of copies in circulation with its 11th volume.

Probably not 2 million since no individual volume has reached that milestone yet, though all are well on their way. 1.5 million is still huge. I believe it's the highest a series has had outside of One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Attack on Titan. If volume 15 manages to break 1 million in its first week, or get close (900,000+), especially since it's a traditional 3 day week, it'll be a significant achievement.

Not surprised by the 36 million announcement ahead of volume 15's release, but it's still crazy how much it keeps adding every month. It's already blown past MHA's lifetime circulation figure with just half the number of volumes. Not a dig at MHA, just more evidence how popular JJK has become.
