Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
One Piece #100 released this weekend. Incredible accomplishment. And episode 1,000 of the anime is quickly approaching.

Oda said the story has reached its final stretch, so Wano Kuni could be in a similar place in the second half of the story as Enies Lobby was in the first half of the story (volumes 1-60). Meaning once it concludes, we'll may have a smaller arc or two that helps sets up the finale (think Sabaody Archipelago & Amazon Lily) that leads into one more larger arc ahead of/leads into the finale (think Impel Down and the start of Marineford), and then the final finale arc.

That's my prediction anyway. ~115-120 volumes in total.

So Oda saying the story would end in 4-5 years last year probably won't be too far off. I think it'll go a little longer (because Oda), especially at 3 volumes a year versus 4 volumes which probably adds another year, but it's definitely shaping up to be in the final stretch for sure.

Volume 100 / Episode 1,000 celebration song by Radwimps (probably best known for doing the soundtracks for Makoto Shinkai's recent films).

*Potential spoilers if not caught up with the anime*

Here the Oricon's august top 20 by series : https://twitter.com/WSJ_manga/status/1433713699345346567?s=20
Does My Hero Academia sold more than a million in a month for its first time ?

To speak of One Piece it seems its 99th volume is selling very well and I wonder if the 100th is doing a way better than previous volumes... There's almost 10 volumes of the serie in weekly top 500 from Shoseki so I guess there's a little hype about it.
And last one shot from Tatsuki Fujimoto is doing good and within top 5 according to Shoseki ranking. I'm curious to know how much top sellers do in this category... Of course I guess the notoriety of an author plays so much as the quality ! (or even more ?)

It probably is the first month MHA has broke 1 million. The only other time may have been around in the middle of season three, maybe, but I don't recall see it ever above 1 million in the past. Pretty remarkable.

Hoping for some big numbers from One Piece this week. Would only be appropriate to celebrate it 100th volume release. I wouldn't expect a huge jump in first week sales for it though since the base is very much established, but perhaps it managed to move a couple hundred thousand more than the last few volumes from collectors buying an extra copy and/or more casual fans picking this one up.

For MHA, it happened two times during the second semester of 2018; 1 162 000 for a month with 5 weeks and 1 180 000 for a month with 4.

Around 15% better than OP's previous first week of selling. Not too bad ! I guess it sold more backlog so it'll be a +10% more than volume 99 ? Congrats One Piece and Oda for such a great longevity at this high level !
Look back will hit more than 100k with next week so it's pretty good !

Kaiju No.8 sold 10k less than its previous first week and has +1 volume so it's doing worse for its first 3 days. Let's see if it'll change with the next 2 weeks...

Volume 99's first week sales accounted for a whopping 97.4% of the series' sales that week, so if Volume 100 had a similar share, it may have debuted around 1,240,000 or so. But like you said, some of the previous volumes were popping up on the rankings this week, so backlog sales may have seen a slight increase to celebrate Volume 100's release.

Volume 100 will be the 49th One Piece volume to debut above 1 million in its first week... (It would have been the 50th volume to do so, but Volume 95 missed 1 million since it was released on a Saturday, making its first week just 2 days.) And this is excluding any volumes that may have broke 1 million in their first week before Oricon began tracking sales in 2008.

Volume 100 is also the 6th manga volume to debut above 1 million in 2021 in its first week, and 7th in the Oricon year. Jujutsu Kaisen #17 will presumably also break 1 million in its first week, and assuming it does, we'll have 7 1 million debuts in 2021 and 8 in the Oricon year. I'm going to guess One Piece #101 won't make the Oricon year, but it could, potentially, be released at the end of 2021 too.

What's the record for most 1 million debuts in a single year? I feel like it has to be 7 back when Attack on Titan was doing it regularly. So those couple of years during AOT's peak (2014/2015) likely saw 7 with 4 One Piece volumes and 3 AOT volumes.

2021 is first with 7 1M+ first week releases (KnY 23, fanbook 2, OP 98, 99, 100, JJK 15, 16), soon to be 8 as JJK 17 is basically guaranteed a 1M+ fw since it has a full 7 days first week in october.

Second would be tied at 6 with 2014 (OP 73, 74, 75, AOT 12, 13, 14 (adding up SKUs from NE+LE)), 2015 (OP 76, 77, 78, 79, AOT 15,16), 2016 (OP 80, 81, 82, 83, AOT 18, 20 (adding up SKUs from NE+LE)), and 2020 (KnY 19, 20, 21, 22, OP 96, 97).

I'd estimate the OP backlog this week to be at ~100k, putting it right around or slightly behind 94's first week for the same number of days. That's good, though I have to say I expected more given the milestone and the marketing around it.

2021 broke the record this week then. Pretty remarkable, and like you just said, it's going to beat its own record next month.

One Piece has broken and is holding records and achievements that will never be beaten and just continues to add to them, but I wonder if all its remaining volumes (15-20 more sounds reasonable) will continue to sell over 1 million copies in their first week.

And I don't know if it was missed here, but One Piece hit 490 million copies in circulation (400 million from Japan, 90 million from 57 other markets) back in July, allowing it to surpass Batman to become the second best selling/circulated comic/manga book series in the world. Should break 500 million in late 2022/early 2023 (shortly after its 25th anniversary!).

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
As a new series, Witch Watch had really strong sales to secure a spot in Top 50.
If this trend continues, 2021 will break another revenue's record for the Japanese Manga Industry. Last year, the industry generated 612 billion Yen, the highest record since 1978 (according to AJPEA):

It is hard to believe that Kimetsu no Yaiba has boosted the whole industry in a miraculous way.

Thanks, Rouk'.

Good prediction on One Piece, JustLurking! Was expecting maybe around 1.3/1.4 million for One Piece #100 prior to the weekly series sales, but this is still 121,000 higher than #99. For such a long-running series, that's still a pretty good bump. Also impressed by #99 resurfacing so high.

Kaiju #8 also saw another increase over its previous volume. Nice to see it still growing.

In response to the information MSFK shared, do you have a rough, general idea of how 2021 is comparing to 2020 at this point in time, Rouk' (or anyone else)?

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
That's one of the best second weeks, post a new volume release, for One Piece in a long time, maybe a decently long time (2-3 years+?). It's...

~182,000 higher than the series sales in the second week of Volume 99's release
~117,000 higher than the series sales in the second week of Volume 98's release
~165,000 higher than the series sales in the second week of Volume 97's release
~76,000 higher than the series sales in the second week of Volume 96's release
~163,000 higher than the series sales in he second week of Volume 94's release

Note: It came in ~16,000 lower than the series sales in the second week of Volume 95's release, but Volume 95 (thus the series) had an inflated second week since it received an unusual Saturday release which pushed a lot of sales into its second week. So almost matching that week is really, really impressive.

Couldn't easily find the series sales any later back, just the individual volumes, but looking at Volume 93's second week sales (and assuming that was ~90%+ of that week's sales for the series), then Volume 100's second week beat it pretty easily too (likely by over 100,000).

And looking at the individual volume sales...

Assuming that at least 427,060 of that 542,162 week is for Volume 100, which it should easily be and a good bit higher, Volume 100 broke 1.6 million copies over its second weekend. The last OP volume to exceed 1.6 million after 2 weeks was Volume 93 (1,716,100) back in July 2019. Volume 92 sold 1,604,070 after its first two weeks back in March 2019. So... if Volume 100's two week total is above Volume 92's tomorrow, which looks pretty good, it'll have the second highest two-week total since the start of Wano Country (Volume 91-) only after 91 (1,801,917) and 93 (1,716,100).

Volume 100's second week may have earned the biggest second week for a OP volume since ~2017 if you exclude Volume 95's inflated second week by releasing on a Saturday. It's higher than all of the 90-99 volumes, and I'm pretty confident it's higher than the latter 80 volumes (~87-89) since them, and 90, had pretty huge second week drops and were well below 400,000 most of the time.

MHA's still selling pretty good thanks to its movie ! Look Back is doing great too and actually keeps a good rank if we look at daily shoseki rankings.
I'm really happy to see One Piece volume 100 good reception ! Personnaly I still love to folow and read it (well not everyweek anymore xD) and 100 volumes...seriously... It's really impressive ! As an illustrator I try to understand how hard Oda worked these past 24 years and even before to learn drawing and writing manga at the beginning.

MHA could have its biggest year ever. Probably looking at a little over 6 million (~6.1/6.2 million) I'd estimate with no more volumes this year, but assuming volume 32 releases the first week of November, then it'll around half a million if it gets two weeks before the year ends. Putting its 2021 total around ~6.6-6.8 million.

2018 is currently its best year at 6.718 million, so it's going to be close! Whichever week the Oricon year ends this year may decide it. Volume 32 getting two weeks of sales cuts it very close (maybe putting it at a disadvantage), but three weeks probably gives 2021 the advantage.

JustLurking predicted 6.5-7 million, so they'll likely be right on!

Anyone know if the Oricon year ends the week of November 14th or 21st yet?
